Thanks you guys! I ended up going and it was a lot of fun!

I did end up with a sore throat but didn't have a fever at all and it was pretty mild, so no idea if it was related to what DH had or just some other virus. I've had several sore throats - but not other symptoms - since LO started daycare and probably need to ask my PCP about it. DH's mono test came back negative but the throat culture still hasn't come back, a bit pointless at this point anyways since he's gotten the better way through the course of antibiotics.

@periwinklebee: How old is your LO? Kids under 2 rarely get strep and even if they do, it’s not nearly as bad for them as it is for us. My 2.5 year old was kind enough to bring home strep recently for both my husband and me. We both felt like we were dying... meanwhile that kid was acting totally normal and we only knew he was the carrier because he had had one evening of a 101 fever the week before we got sick. So honestly I’d be more concerned for yourself than your kid. Do you have a PCP? Strep exposure is pretty cut and dry so if you DO come down with symptoms, your PCP should be willing to call in a prescription to a pharmacy wherever you are without you having to go see someone.

I got strep and pink eye back in May and my husband didn't get either nor did still breastfeeding E. Now I took precautions but still kissed them both and didn't quarantine myself.

I also say go. Our littlest has recurrent strep issues and just had a tonsillectomy as a result (she’s 3.5). While our older girl had her share of it during Kinder she has not got it from our younger. And DH and I haven’t had it either. I also have my tonsils out from this same issue when I was young. There are definitely people who are more prone.

@periwinklebee: if you don't have it yet you both are likely fine. I've never had it despite being closely exposed several times. My roommates in college both had it twice and we lived in 3 person dorm room. And my husband had the really horrendous antibiotic resistant strain and we were sleeping in the same bed and kissing the night before he woke up with it. So I totally agree that some people just don't get it

@PinkElephant: @annem1990: @misolee: @ALV91711: @Amorini: @bhbee: Thank you all - this is super helpful! Makes me feel much better about just going - it would stink to cancel. Still no symptoms for either myself or LO.

@PinkElephant: This is super interesting about some people being less susceptible. I've never had it before, knock on wood. I was reading about how contagious it is, for several days before symptoms start, and thinking "oh no, we shared food" (bad, I know) but I really hope your theory is correct!

I would go too. It might be easier for DH to rest and recover by himself at him rather than hotel.
My daughter had strep when she was 4, she was running a fever that was up and down and we took her in just in case and she tested positive. We had just come back from a big trip with lots of people and I felt awful and prayed that no one got exposed. No one said anything after, my husband was fine, my 1 year old was fine, and I was newly pregnant and I was fine.

I'd still go on the trip. If one of you do end up getting sick then at least you have lots of help around. And hopefully by the time you are home DH will be feeling better.

I like what PPs have said. My only two cents is based on what I went through before a big trip. DS (around 13 months at the time) had been having recurrent ear infections and he had been acting unwell the day before the trip. We assumed it would be another ear infection and we would have to cancel. I think it was even a day that daycare called and had me pick him up for a mild fever! So I took him to see the ped who said his ears looked borderline but confirmed that he just seemed unwell. It looked likely that he would get the ear infection and was just a matter of time. Rather than starting him on antibiotics straightaway, the ped gave me a prescription to fill if/when he needed it on the trip so we wouldn’t have to hunt down a ped while away. I thought that was a good way of handling it.

Turns out we didn’t need the meds (probably Murphy’s Law). In your case, I don’t know if there’s any justification for the script at this point (or if there’s even time), but thought that might give you another angle on it. Our ped knew we weren’t ones to give our kid antibiotics unless necessary (esp because of some specific allergy issues we have) so it may go against medical best practices what he did, but we were grateful.

I would probably go if I were in your shoes and just research ahead of time where I could get LO seen if necessary. Fingers crossed and hope your DH feels better soon!

I’d go! Agree with above. I was also told this year that kids under 3 (or something similar) get strep much more rarely. My 6yo had recurrent strep this year (thanks kinder!) and has had it before. She actually even had it (before we knew, but she was probably contagious) when we kept my niece when her baby brother was born. That one freaked me out but no one else got it even though the kids are all over each other, she threw up from fever, etc. Also can’t speak to mono but I actually find strep to be a “favorite” (ha) diagnosis because kids feel better soooo quickly with antibiotics. Much better than a virus.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! Honestly, unless one of you is actively showing symptoms at this point, I think I'd still go, unless you booked refundable tickets, and have the vacation time to travel at another date instead. If you or your LO do get sick, you'd have extra hands with all the family around, if you have a nationwide insurance carrier, they should/ would cover a visit to an in-network urgent care center where you're visiting.

I have three kids, and if we stayed home every time someone had potentially been exposed to something (but wasn't exhibiting symptoms), we'd never go anywhere. At least strep isn't a drippy/sneezy kind of illness, and your DH probably doesn't put LO's toys in his mouth....so hopefully chances of exposure, at least for LO, are less than if it were a stomach virus or something.

Also, this may be kind of a myth, but someone recently told me that strep is one of those things you're either prone to, or you're not. Do you get it often? If not, it's likely you'll be fine. I've never (knock on wood) had strep, nor have any of my kids. During a recent outbreak at school, I was musing to another mom wondering if I was a terrible parent and just hadn't taken my kids in (when they had it), because they'd never had it to my knowledge, and she said, nope! She and her siblings never had it, her kids have never had it, but her DH got it ALL. THE. TIME and is still prone as an adult.

I know not many people are likely here with the holiday, but I'll try anyways... We were planning to travel to visit my family this week - two flights cross-country. We only go once or twice a year as its fairly expensive and the whole family will be there.

DH developed a fever yesterday - we thought it was a sinus infection, but his fever was 103+ by the time I got home from work today. He went to urgent care and for whatever reason the rapid strep test malfunctioned, but they think it is most likely strep, or maybe mono. Blood work will confirm, but it will take awhile with the holiday.

Obviously DH should stay home and get better. But trying to decide if LO and I should go. It also sort of sucks because it was 100 degrees today and the only room in our house with AC (an inadequate portable unit) is our bedroom. So I sent DH to a nearby hotel - he felt so horrible he could barely get into an uber - which is a considerable expense. If we go ahead and go he could come rest at home without fear of getting us sick being crammed into the same bedroom, but I worry that LO or I - or both of us - are likely to come down with it as well. We will potentially expose others, accessing medical care out of state will be a mess, and I'm just imagining being delayed for heavens knows how long at O'Hare with both myself and the baby sick when we have to come back...So I don't know if we should go... I know my family will say "yes, come" even if it means getting exposed, but not sure it's a good idea.
