@mrs. wagon: Duval Patrick said exceptions would be made for people doing necessary travel like getting to shelter.

Yeah I think it's just to really drive home the point that you really, really shouldn't be out and it's for more than just your own safety, but so the emergency equipment can get out where it needs to be. I do agree it seems a big extreme, but at the same time, now not only plows and salt/sand machines can get out where they need to be, but there is less risk of a traffic accident with fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars if they need to go out.

I don't think they would actually ticket someone driving to someone else's house with power, they just want you to think about what is safer, staying home without power or driving to that house.

@mrs. wagon: I mean, I had no real intention of going anywhere, but are they going to pull everyone over (which seems dangerous) to find out where they are going?

Yeah I'd chance it if I had to. From the article it seems like they're probably not going to punish people if they find them on the road. The ban is just meant to encourage people not to drive unless it's an emergency.

@bpcmarj: it mentions "public safety" so maybe that's considered an exception? I don't know!!

I think it's absurd. I can hear cars driving by our apartment (down by the sagamore bridge) and they are flying and the roads sound wet. I mean I understand we haven't got the worst of it, but I think it's dangerous to not let people drive if they REALLY need to. I don't know. People with babies and no heat?

Huh I've never heard of a travel ban. What happens if they catch you? Do you just get told to go home or do you get ticketed or arrested?

If I didn't have a way to heat my home during an extended power outage, I guess I would chance it.

@mrs. wagon: this has happened before and we drove to my ILs who had a generator.
ETA: a travel ban just means you should not be on the road unless you absolutely HAD to for emergency purposes so that the roads stay clear for the plows. ie we walked a few blocks to the grocery store instead of driving.

So our state has a travel ban starting at 4pm. No cars on the road at all with a few exceptions. My brother brought up a good question-- what happens if you lose power? You aren't allowed to try and get to a hotel or friend's house?

We've got lots of warm blankets and our neighbor has a generator, but I'm just wondering what people would do during a travel ban if they lost power for more than 24 hours!
