@Shopaholic: the Triumph reclines, but not completely flat. It is intended for six months and up. Maclaren also has the Quest which reclines flat and is suitable from birth, but I think it's 4-5 pounds heavier.

The Bugaboo was in a clear plastic airline bag when the wheel incident happened. The transport bag sold by Bugaboo is way too padded and stiff to fold up for gate checking. I had a canvas gate-check made, but ultimately decided a light, simple stroller was the easiest for when I need to travel alone with LO.

For travel, we use the Mia Moda Cielo Evolution stroller:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UHJ0FW/

It looks like they might not make it anymore, which is a shame. We love it. It cost us $150, which is a lot for a travel stroller, but it fits in the overhead bin so you can carry it on board. It is also super easy to steer with one hand which is very handy when you are travelling with a LO. We did a ton of research on all the options, and rather than buy a cheapo umbrella stroller that we might struggle with pushing, or take our nicer stroller and risk damage by the baggage handlers (we've heard many horror stories), we splurged and are always so happy that we did. It is not light but it is easy to open and to fold up, we can do both one handed holding LO with the other hand. There is plenty of storage space underneath. We started putting him in it when he was about 8 mos but he was a petite guy (15th percentile weight), still does great at 17 mos now. The back does not recline but he doesn't sleep in the stroller so that has never even occurred to me :) We have ended up also using it for trips closer to home when we are driving since it takes up less space and is easier to fold than our regular stroller.

If you come across one somewhere, I highly highly recommend them.

Had to chime in - I have strong opinions about strollers :)

We're still using a infant car seat and I didn't want to ruin it in case for future LOs. We ended up renting one. For the big Asia trip, we are not going to take one and look into a rental for when we drive ( mostly subway)

I think the g luxe sounds perfect for when you travel...we have one and have used it on the subway and it's way easier than the vista. It also pushes really well and seems very sturdy, not flimsy at all.

We just traveled to Chicago and we have a big Asia trip coming up so I was worried on what to do. We ended up buying the Chicco c6 for around $70. Even though its an umbrella stroller, it still has all the stuff we needed (reclined slightly, big sunshade, tall handles). It's also super light and easy to carry. It also came with a bag so it was convenient to gate check. My LO had just turned 7 months and she fell asleep well during the whole trip.

We just took our first trip, and used our cheapie Graco travel system and gate checked it. Our nicer car seat (maxi-Cosi)and stroller (BOB) stayed at home. I'm glad we did it that way. The Graco was definitely lighter than our nicer ones, and it was nice to have our car seat.

Our LO is six months, and while we were our and about he was able to sleep in both the car seat snapped in and also when we just took out the stroller, reclined all the way back.

@SAHM0811: I will have to sell it that way to Dh - "It's not a 'nice' umbrella stroller. Just a regular one." ;)

@PinkElephant: Does the Maclaren recline all the way? I will have to look into it. And uh, yeah, a missing wheel? wtf. Was it in a bag when they lost it?

@lemondrop: Thanks - will look into that.

@sunny: Exactly my thinking too. I'm not planning to use the stroller at all in Venice. Just need it for the cruise ship mainly. I doubt we'll even take it off the ship at ports. Bringing the car seat to Europe is my big debate. But I will need it for Chicago.

@LaineysMom: ;) Great minds think alike!

@shopaholic: Your LO might not be old enough to sit in a regular cheapie umbrella stroller, so you probably need to get the gluxe.. Haha. That would be my rationale.

We brought our normal stroller to Europe (Britax b-agile) because we wanted to be able to use the carseat and snap it in. My LO just doesn't look comfortable in the stroller seat yet. However... Venice is going to be killer. Omg you do not want to be hauling a big heavy stroller across all the bridges! So I am voting for a light stroller! Plus, many of the buildings don't have elevators. We had to haul our luggage up to the 4th floor of a building and it was not pleasant. I wouldn't want to haul a heavy stroller up and down all those steps every time we went out.

We found a compromise, a light stroller but sturdier than an umbrella. I took it across country traveling alone with our little guy and had a great experience with it. After a ton of research we got the Kolcraft Countours for $65. It can also be adapted to hold an infant seat.

The Maclaren Triumph is a great travel stroller. I wanted a nicer umbrella stroller for trips, but the price tag on a new one was high eniugh that it sort of defeated the purpose of buying a "throwaway" stroller. However, i knew a cheapue wouldnt really meet my exoectatiobs, so I decided to compromise and bought a lightly used one for around $50. I do miss our Bugaboo when we travel, but it is so nice not to obsess over whether or not the stroller will come up from being gate check scratched, dirty, or missing a wheel (yes this happened to my Cameleon in Hawaii...you'd better believe DH had the baggage guys searching the belly of the plane for that tire!) throughout the flight.

I would bring my G-Luxe on those trips, but I don't really think of it as a *nice* umbrella. I actually hate how they have their logo aaaall over the sides, but there are other things I like about the stroller, so I got it. Recline is important to me as is it's ability to stand on it's own and hold a moderate amt of things, while still being pretty light.

I have brought a "cheap" $25 BRU stroller to Hawaii before and it was fine, but it was for my then 3 yo where recline and storage for baby things wasn't a big deal.

But for big cities with an infant? A g-luxe would be a good compromise. I have travelled with big strollers before (a Bugaboo and a MB double), and it was a pain everytime, even if I checked it in right away before security. But the first time, I didn't know any better... And the second time, I was moving and didn't want to pay shipping for the double.

@mrsmate: @Ree723: This is my other thought too. I've been thinking about getting the UB G-Luxe for the recline ability. K will be almost 4 months at the time. I'm only planning to use the stroller for the airport and while we are on the cruise ship. I don't want to haul around the stroller on cobblestone streets and over bridges (we'll also be in Venice for 1 week). But I think DH will think I'm crazy for needing the UBV in the first place, if I want to get a "nice" umbrella stroller too. But yes, totally spoiled with a nice stroller.

Cheapie for the reason @mrsmate mentioned! Depending on where you're going in Europe, you will be carrying that stroller up and down an awful lot of staircases so the lighter, the better. We only ever travel with our cheapie...but it's a nicer umbrella stroller so it suits our needs just fine and was easy peasy to carry up and down the Tube steps in London.

I heard some airlines are starting to put weight limits on strollers for gate check, so if you were planning on doing that UBV may not work. And depending on where you go in Europe, it may not be very stroller-friendly (no ramps or elevators).

When we travel we bring our gluxe, which we bought the travel bag for. The recline function is really nice so that DD can take a decent nap when we're out and about. Owning UB strollers has really spoiled me, the cheapo strollers are such a drag to maneuver.

I was just thinking about this the other day. If you check it through and have a hard bag for it, I'd bring the good stroller. If you're gate checking, I'd go with cheap. But not too cheap - those $30 (or less?) umbrella strollers are super short so they're killer on you back to push unless you're really short too!

When you travel, would you rather:
a) Bring your own nice stroller, or
b) Buy a cheap stroller you don't care about?

We have the UBV, and I DID buy the travel bag for warranty purposes, but I was thinking for our Europe trip, especially with 4 different flights, I might want to buy a cheap snap-n-go stroller I don't care about. For our domestic trip, I might want to still bring our nice stroller, but DH thinks we should get a cheap, throw-away umbrella stroller.

What do/would you do?
