@youboots: I went to Mexico at 32 weeks pregnant and stayed at a resort. I just followed the no fresh unpeeled fruits/veggies and used bottled water and no problems!

I made my husband grab the morning glasses of champagne as they came around the beach so I could have some and take a nap :)

Don't forget the ice in drinks. We went to Puerto Vallarta and at the resort we stayed at, the ice was fine but it may not be the case everywhere.

@blackbird Now Riveria Jade. I guess I can just ask what their policies for food handling are.

Thank you!!

The resorts are pretty good--where are you staying? I stayed in Puerto Morelos a few times. They used filtered water to wash all the fruits where I stayed. All the ice was filtered, too. Use bottled water to brush your teeth, etc. I stayed away from yogurts/dairies because they never seemed to be quite cold enough for me to be comfortable with.

Have fun!

We will be staying at a resort the whole time, usually we would venture out but with wanting to be careful with food and not wanting to have to worry about my photo equipment. It's in Puerto Morales.

@mamimani thanks for your thoughts. I'm hardly showing yet and I'm not worried about what people think, I just feel like what's presented in the US is a bit of fear mongering but my parents raised me in Germany early on and have parented me in a Europian manner. So that has an impact on my attitude and the advice I am getting about pregnancy. I just want to have a half of a corona and take a nap :)

I plan on sticking to bottled water.

I am sure you will be fine and stick to reputable places. Most of them disinfect fruits and vegetables very thoroughly. As for alcohol, enjoy some here! Mexicans are totally non-judgy about that so it may be your only chance to have a glass of wine or a beer in public. I had a drink about once a week after the first trimester.

(I live in Mexico.)

@youboots: I would just be careful of some of the cheeses that aren't pastuerized -I know that some mexican cheeses aren't. I wouldn't worry too much, you're probably as likely to get sick from a salad down the street as anything else. Enjoy it!

As for the drinking, I had around 5 glasses of wine (over the 9 months, not at once - that would have been naughty!). I find the blanket ban to be more of a US thing, but it depends on what you are comfortable with.

It all depends on where you stay in Mexico. We were in Puerto Vallarta at an all inclusive resort in March and neither of us got sick. Even though they said the water was safe to drink from the faucet, we didn't want to risk it and only drank bottled water the entire time we were there. We brought a lot of Pepto though as a precaution, glad we didn't have to use it!!

I would just stay away from fruits where you eat the skin (apples, pears, etc), lettuces, etc, although to be honest, if it's a nice resort they probably wash everything in filtered water. Same for the ice.

That being said, I was in Mexico in Feb at a REALLY nice resort, and I still got a bad case of something for about 24 hours. It was fine, and if it happens while you're pregnant, I think the key is just to stay hydrated.

As for the drinking, I didn't do it, but I think you're probably fine to have some wine or beer a few times, or probably every day TBH. Depends on your comfort level.

M and I are headed to Mexico, just outside Cancun, for our anniversary and to shoot a wedding. I will be 18ish weeks pregnant. I have been feeling a lot better. The last couple weeks and able to eat a bit more food. My only concern is, what should I be worried about food wise in Mexico? I have been following the food rules I think are reasonable (like staying away from fish high in Mercury and undercooked meat) but I have been eating undercooked eggs and an occasional turkey sandwich. Now I'm feeling really worried, about things being cooked to tempature and unpasteurized cheese, and well everything. We are staying at a nice all inclusive resort. Any tips or feedback?

Side note: in my group of friends and family I have noticed pregnant women having a beer or wine in moderation. I'm comfortable with the idea later in my pregnancy, but I sure would not mind having a half of a beer here and there on the trip. I read Expecting Better by Emily Oster and Bringing up Bebe which both say that this is fine, but I'm not quite sure. When did you have a drink besides just a sip when pregnant if at all? I'm not sure if this is a controversial topic in here.
