@theknest: no tape isn't banned. actually it was taken away from us in the philippines. i took it with me on us flights and it was fine. i prefer masking tape since it's cheaper!

your comment actually made me think of this toy!

@mrsbee - I keep trying to think of things. My 22 month old loves the squinkie like toys. They are a choking hazard so we have to watch him with them but they've gotten us through a lot of church sermons ;-) loves to open up the plastic "eggs" take the toy out, then put it back in.

I found magnetic dress up dolls at the 99 cent store. That and a small cookie sheet (also from the 99 cent store) and a pack of alphabet magnets I bought a while ago from the dollar store keeps my DD busy for at least 30 minutes. She hasnt gotten tired of them yet!

@mrsbee - hope it's a toy Olive will enjoy playing with. It's great for hand-eye coordination too! I came accross some tape online the other day that looks like a road - black with a white strip down the middle, but I'm guessing all tape is banned?

I am really struggling at finding things to bring on airplanes, I feel like all I have to offer are dry erase crayons and color wonder stuff.

I was just at Target over lunch to check out the dollar section and there was really nothing there, although most moms swear by it!

My 22 months old loves puzzles. We have the Melissa & Doug animals mini puzzle pack. It is compact so it will fit in a purse or a diaper bag. How about this Melissa & Doug wooden bear family dress up puzzle for Olive? It has 45 pieces so it will probably keep her busy for awhile. http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Wooden-Family-Dress-Up/dp/B00146G706/ref=sr_1_30?ie=UTF8&qid=1374684428&sr=8-30&keywords=Melissa+and+Doug+puzzle+set

@theknest: i already ordered two of those reusable sticker pads! the jungle one and the home themed one.

@T-Mom: i did buy some felt with the intention of making my own quiet book.... but i doubt i will get around to it before we leave!

@tysonja: i took painter's tape last time, and they actually confiscated it on one of our flights. it's considered a banned item on some airlines!

You might consider also small regular stickers to decorate stuffed animal, you, or her. Small little windup toy. Gift wrap everything so she can take time unwrapping.

i've heard that one of the best (and cheap/disposable) toys for the plane is a roll of tape all for themselves... perhaps coloured painters tape? they can tape things together, tape things to the seat/tray, tape themselves. :)

My DS is around the same age as Olive and he really loves books. Maybe a quiet book? http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Book-Fabric-Activity-Children/dp/B00000J3LL/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1374008241&sr=1-1&keywords=quiet+book

We're making the 8 flight roundtrip from NY - LA - Seoul - Manila - El Nido and back again this summer to visit our families, and I'd like to buy a couple of new toys for the trip for Charlie and Olive because we are going to be spending a lot of time on planes. (around 50 hours total!)

You can see some of the stuff we packed last year -- http://www.hellobee.com/2012/09/13/best-infant-and-toddler-travel-toys/

This year we'll be taking a couple of the same things -- notebook/crayons, play doh, magnatiles, reusable sticker book. And I bought two new toys for Olive -- a buckle toy and a three little pigs toy. Charlie will be fine, but I really need to keep Olive entertained!

Charlie is 3 1/2 and Olive is 21 months old.

Please let me know if you've come across any cool and small toys!
