@WyattnewbabysMama: It doesn't matter much at that age, anything colorful will distract them for a bit. I did Daniel Tiger and Sesame Street. Peppa Pig is a current favorite.

@WyattnewbabysMama: My son is 15 months old now, and Sesame Street/Elmo's World is a big hit.

The little laptop @Shannon: linked to was a favorite at that age in the car.

If he likes taking stuff out of containers what about putting some strips of fabric or baby washcloths in an old wipes container for him to pull out? I never did that in the car but LO enjoyed that around that age.

@WyattnewbabysMama: our LO didn't get any screen time until a road trip around that age. We tried Daniel Tiger (pbs kids) and he loved it. You could always try a few things before you leave or just download a few different shows to have a variety available.

@macintosh: We are doing a 2 hour plane ride followed by a long car trip soon and my guy will be 15 months old. We haven't shown him any screen time yet, but were thinking that we might like to have it as a backup option for this trip. What did specifically did your toddler watch? I don't know where to start with this for him.

We took a 10 hour car trip at 12 months. I brought a bunch of soft toys and light books (cause I knew they would be thrown). DH sat in back and handed him a new toy each time he threw one. We also put the iPad on with cartoons towards the end of the drive when he was getting bored.

LeapFrog talking Lap-pup kept my 1yo occupied for long stretches in the car: https://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-My-Talking-LapPup-Scout/dp/B00804BCK0/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1478016053&sr=1-1&keywords=my+talking+lappup

And, toy rotation works really well at that age, alternated with snacks.

My in-laws bought lo this obnoxious electronic toy https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Laugh-Learn-Puppys-Piano/dp/B005XVCR02 but it was actually kind of perfect for car trips around that age!

This may sound dumb, but is your 3.5 year old FF? Ours is, and the 15m old is RF. Their seats are right next to one another (no seat in between) and the biggest entertainment for DS2 is, well, his brother.

We went on an 11-hour road trip when our son was 11.5 months - we packed a travel cooler with interesting toys and one of us sat in the backseat to rotate through them. We'd also stop every few hours for a 10 minute stretch break, which helped him get the wiggles out, and brought lots of snacks. It still wasn't exactly fun, but we made it through!

In terms of specific toys - he enjoyed the VTec baby phone, that Baby Einstein musical toy that plays classical music, stacking rings, a shape sorter and blocks, & touch and feel books.

We're about to do a long road trip with our (just) 1 yr old and 3.5 yr old. The older one is easy (though if anyone has amazing travel toy suggestions for a preschooler I'll take them!) but I'm at a loss for how to entertain the baby and wondering if anyone has suggestions for toys for that age. We'll have plenty of snacks and driving a lot at night/naptime, but we still have to do a decent amount during the day and he's an unreliable napper

I never had to deal with really long trips like this with my daughter bc we flew more often, and I'm struggling because he's beyond the "bat at stuff" age but not yet capable of focusing on a toy to really play with it. At home he goes from toy to toy, banging stuff together, throwing things, taking stuff out of containers, etc. Nothing really car appropriate. I'd love any travel/car-friendly ideas for something that might entertain that barely-toddler-age!
