I'd do the umbrella stroller. With some practice I was eventually able to go to the bathroom while baby wearing no prob, and once or twice had a 2 year old or 4 year old sit with the baby on their lap for a VERY short time to help.

this thread got me thinking about potentially bringing my umbrella stroller with the idea to mostly babywear. But would have the option to put baby down and my 6yo could prop her up in there for a few minutes (it also reclines some) but not have to completely hold her ... and I could avoid the car seat. She’s very responsible so thinking we could try it out at home at least.

@bhbee: Hah, maybe I'm just unlucky :silly: Or United airlines continues to go downhill

I hate peeing with the baby in the carrier, but ultimately made it work. Put the six year old to work - I bet she'll love being helpful with "her baby"!

I'm so excited and happy that the new LO will be in your arms soon!!!

@periwinklebee: that is crazy they lost it twice! I’ve only ever gate checked an umbrella stroller but been really lucky I guess!

Your post made me think that maybe I need to see how helpful my 6yo can be ... if she could hold the baby while I went to the bathroom that would go a long way for me :silly:

I've traveled solo several times with my infant - twice with layovers - and personally find gate checking the stroller/infant seat more bother than it is worth. I don't have older kids, though, so don't know how that interacts. It was impossible for me to lift the stroller and infant seat into and out of the gate check bags with the baby in the carrier and I'd be afraid to gate check them without bags due to damage. Thankfully kind strangers helped but still annoying. If you're delayed and have tight connections, it can also take awhile for them to bring gate checked items up to the jet bridge.

Then there is the risk that it's lost...I gate checked the stroller/infant seat on two trips, and both times they were lost. In one case, United Airlines lost it on a direct flight and took two days to find it. In the other case, it was lost and I had an eighteen hour delay and had to hold the baby the entire time.

My most recent trip, I just checked it at the desk before going through security - I needed the carseat at our destination. And things went much more smoothly...

in the fall there's a good chance I'll fly alone to my mom's with 3 kids (6, 3 and a few months, baby not here yet). I'm used to flying alone and traveling with 2 - I usually bring an umbrella stroller which splits time between holding all our junk and holding a whiny 3yo (who definitely can walk if needed).

my mom has car seats for the older two but no infant seat. she has the option to take a friend's old one (used not expired) as they want to get rid of it right now, but I can't decide if it would be just as easy to gate check our own seat / snap n go (one downside I see is the risk of damage). that way I'd have good storage, the 3yo would have to walk and I could put the baby down (vs being forced to babywear all the time - not so fun for bathroom breaks or helping my older kids or stopping for food - or god forbid delays).

anyone have thoughts on the easiest way to do this? I hate to have my mom take the seat if we won't actually use it, but I guess she could also pass it on eventually.
