I would fly, for sure. My SIL just embarked on a 12 hour drive ALONE with her 2 yo and 2 month old twins. Yikes! She said it was surprisingly easy, but you couldn't pay me to do it!

@PawPrints: nursing them both would be ideal.....but like @lilyofthewest: my babies are often 40 -50 minute murders. That would extend driving days massively and what would DH do that whole time? I'd be self conscious & probably rush things

Very big majority of you think we should fly....thanks for all the feedback & personal experiences.......time to talk with DH!! Wenjoy haven't driven more than 45 min with them....and usually each trip involves some crying....so driving could be pretty awful......

Driving at that age was really really difficult (we frequently drove 2-3 hours for work and family commitments) because timing everything when all they have is BM and can't concentrate on anything else is tough. I would fly. Especially because it's a short trip.

Fly fly fly fly.

I just recently traveled with my then-4-month-old. It was two 5hr flights and a ton of driving (several hours each day) The driving was so difficult - LO hated being confined for so long. Breastfeeding AND bottle feeding was a headache. 80% of the time we would pull over, which was a hassle for the drivers and made me rush my nursing session, leading to a frustrated LO. I pumped daily and had that for backup, but it still sucked.

The flights were so easy. Wore him a bunch and used our stroller too, he napped SOOOO well on the plane. Nursing was a breeze.

Definitely think flying would be easier. And why not just nurse them both? Pumping adds so so much more parts and complication!

Sounds like a nightmare! Lol. Been the newborn months, we have always had to try to time as much of our road trips with naps or drive at night. We took 6 hour drive around that age and it was doable but not fun. couldn't imagine two (and I was formula feeding). I hate long drives anyways tho!

I accidentally voted wrong - I think you're off your rocker lol! We flew with DD at that age and she was a dream. Slept and nursed, and we didn't have to entertain her much. We moved cross country with DD at the same age, a few weeks later so 17 hours total over 2 days. It was a nightmare, DD hated the car and got hot a lot and we constantly had to stop and nurse/change diapers and there wasn't much we could do to entertain her in the car seat at that age. Totally sucked! I'd WAY rather have a short flight than a 3 day car ride, sorry DH.

Pfft. I would be mailing a gift and staying home! A 2.5h trip with my LO at 3.5 months made me want to cry. At that point LO wouldn't take a bottle unless I was physically gone for 3+ hours. He spent 40-50 minutes nursing out of every 90m to 2h. Our 2.5h car trip took almost 4 hours.

Personally I would fly or not go at all. My kids were miserable in the car at that age and made even 1 hour drives awful. I couldn't even imagine with twins - one falls asleep and the other starts screaming and wakes up the sleeping baby. No way. We flew with both our kids around 3-4 months and it was so easy. The plane makes them pass out. It was the longest out oldest LO had slept in a stretch to that point! I wouldn't worry so much about cribs because hotels usually have them. Just bring lots of sanitizing wipes with you. And have a great trip, however you do it!

I used to travel for work with my daughter for 5 days a week out of state... My mom would come with me since she could work from anywhere. It was crazy but I did it! I did pump in the car and it worked out fine- I just bought a lightweight poncho so I wouldn't be flashing the entire highway hahaha. I only had one baby but I believe in you!!!

Granted, I just have one and not twins, BUT at 4 months, she was sleeping on every plane ride we took. I would do that over driving if it's an option FOR SURE.

So I would never do this, but I'm pro at flying with babies at this point and would definitely recommend that.

On another note, my mom used to lean over us in our car seats so she could nurse on long car rides. So we'd be buckled but she wouldn't. I've never tried it but hey it might work for someone!

Both of my kids have hated the car from day 1. With little babies, driving long hours sucks because they need and want to be held. Maybe if my babies had been car sleepers I'd feel differently....

I think it really depends. Might be less of a pain to just do the flight?

My daughter was an angel in the car, my 1st son was OK, but my 2nd son haaaated that car at 4 months. It was terrible. Now, at 6 months he's much better but still not long road trip ready.. For him, I actually think he might do better on a plane cuz then I could babywear him for a portion.

It was surprisingly not a big deal.
I think it would be even easier with a younger baby/babies.

I say go for it! We took a trip when DD was 3 months old, and it was a 10 hr drive each way. It was awesome, and she slept most of it truthfully. I was EBF, and we planned our stops/meals around when she needed to nurse. Now granted I just have 1, and twins are a totally different aspect. So there's my suggestion based on 1 baby!

My DH would rather drive than fly as well. I drove 9 hours with a 3 month old when I was EBF. Every 3 hours we stopped and changed and fed him and played with him outside of the car. Nine hours stretched to more like 10.5- 11 hours.
I definitely think it's doable although your breaks will be longer since you have two little ones. Although we survived we have no plans to hit the road anytime soon. Roadtrip with a baby is not all that fun. Every time we put him back in his carseat we prayed he would be content. Once during both ways of the trip he cried for a at least a hour.

We did a 15 hour road trip split up over two days with our six-month-old. It was doable. We did the whole 15 hour drive back in one shot and that was nuts. With twins, I would definitely fly.

I hate road trips, so this sounds like a nightmare to me. You'd probably have to double the normal drive time for all the stops. 28 hours in the car to save what, 2 or 3 hours on a plane? That's a no brainer in my book.

I can't speak to the bottle feeding b/c our then 2mo wasn't taking a bottle, but we did a road trip & survived it. We planned 8hr driving days with stops ~2hrs, though this was flexible if she either was sleeping or crying early. It was a little stressful at times, but she had no trouble sleeping in her Rock n Play (which she'd been sleeping in from day 1) while on the road/at our destination. Good luck!

I would be prepared for the road trip to take a lot longer than it "should" take. We made a 6 hour drive with a 6 month old and with feeding stops, it probably added an extra hour or two.

We have warmed bottles while in transit in the past by bringing a Thermos with hot water or stopping to grab hot water from fast food places.

Have you done any extended drives with them in the car? We had a trip planned to Colorado (from Wisconsin) this summer, and the plan was to drive with our 5 month old. About a month before the trip, we drove about 3 hours to visit relatives. She cried about half the time on the way there, and on the way back. There's just no way that we could do a 15 hour trip and stop every 1.5 hours. We went home and bought plane tickets and it was a wonderful trip. With paying to rent a car, gas, and hotels for several additional nights, I can't imagine you'd save much money by driving. Flying with babies is not bad at all. I've flown about a dozen times with a baby and only had one flight where there was an extended period of crying. The white noise of the plane usually puts them right to sleep.
