I'd actually be more concerned with you traveling than the infant. You may not be back to normal after birth at 4 to 6 weeks post partum.

I had a c-section and I wasn't recovered enough to go anywhere until 7 weeks post partum.

I wasn't in the best shape for at least 2 months after the birth, and I had no major complications, so I wouldn't want to do it. There are too many variables, esp. with a long plane ride.

My son was a totally different baby at 4 weeks and 6 months, when we went on our first international flight as a family.

We're hoping to do our first international trip with LO when he's about 5 months this summer. We want to take him to Texas to meet his great-grandparents and my friends from back home. If there was a reason to go earlier, I would be up for it- but my recovery has been super-crazy easy and LO is (at 1.5 weeks, knock wood) a great sleeper/easy baby.

Thanks everyone for your opinons. We definetly have a lot to think about, including if the DR would approve and if we could get a passport in time.

I'd probably do it as long as I was ready to fend off random touchers and the baby was easy-going/sleepy/good traveler (mine definitely was at that age).

I will second @venice4504 advice about the bassinet seat.

We flew australia -dfw when LO was 5 months. It's a 16 hour flight. LO was perfect, slept for 9 hours. Slept better than DH! The flight went really, really well. LO is an "easy" baby though and a good sleeper. If you can't get a bassinet seat don't even think about it! You generally ring up and request the seats.

In terms of germs, I don't know. I would probably wait until LO has their first set of shots at 6 weeks (they are here). Maybe speak to your Dr about it.

That age is perfect to fly as they are small and don't move around. Another thing is that you will probably want to recover from the birth. Those flights can be uncomfortable! I would push it back to january some time.

I think it depends on if a- you feel up to a flight ( I wasn't really ready until about 2.5 months in), b- you can get a bassinet, c- your LO has a relatively easy temperament. If those are all ok then you should be good to go otherwise I would hold off.

Having now flown around 6 round trip trans-atlantic flights (alone) with my kiddo (who is now 6 months) I would say no. 1) its way too early for the germs and that time of year the kid will get sick. Not a horrible thing but it's something to be prepared for. 2) I'm assuming you're coming back from Asia somewhere due to the length. The flights are fine *if* you're able to get a bassinet seat (bulkhead) and/or your kiddo doesn't have any other health issues. If not, it is going to be on LONG crossing. Our flights started to get better around 4 months and are perfectly fine now. We fly enough that both of us have a routine. Your other issue is if you end up with a c-section or have other complications traveling could be difficult for you.

I think if it is important to your family then it is worth it. I would prepare for a very difficult flight (there will be ups and downs) and commit to you both sharing the burden and giving each other rests. Good luck!

I personally did not travel when my LO was that young but I know people who have and it was fine. The good part is that your newborn will be sleeping a lot so the travel part might not be so bad. The bad part is all the germ exposure so that is why I wouldn't do it.

Even if the plane ride went ok, I wouldn't want to expose my newborn to all those germs. We didn't take lo into public places until after her two month shots, and going on an air plane is even worse.

I feel like the plane ride depends on the baby. My lo had reflux and would cry for hours with no way to soothe her.

Looking for some recommendations on traveling with an infant. We're currently military living overseas. I should be due 15 November. We'd love to be able to go home for the Christmas holidays and introduce the baby to the family. My husband would be joining, so I'd have help, but it's a 20+ hour trip. Are we crazy to consider this?

Of course we could push the trip back to Januray, it's just if you're going that close to the holidays, it'd be great to make them as we haven't been home in a few years.
