At nine months, you're going to have some kind of mobile baby (rolling/crawling/scooting), so you're going to need to think babyproofing in the house to some degree. When you get closer to the date, maybe consider what you've done in your own home and think about how to easily replicate it there so you enjoy yourself and don't have to go crazy. A safe space, hidden cords, whatever.

Yeeks! Here I am starting a thread then not logging back in for 3 days! :P Little J has been pretty fussy this weekend, we had his 4 month shots on Friday so we had the "hangover" to deal with. *sigh.

Anywhoddidle--THANK YOU all so much for your input and for the links to other information! I'm so excited to learn more! I'm working out more details about our possible trip and I'm so freaking excited!! DH and I have never been on a "real" vacation together to actually relax (in six years!) so even though baby J will be with us we wouldn't want it any other way!! :)

I've flown alone with my son several times. I think if your hubby will be coming with you, it's totally do-able. Here's some advice I wrote a few months back about flying with babies: http://www.glimmersnaps.blogspot.com/#!http://glimmersnaps.blogspot.com/2012/06/babies-on-plane.html

You might want to start the process of getting his passport as it can take a few weeks. I would definitely bring your car seat.

Also, you might want to look into what type of safety considerations you'll need at the house. My brother-in-law rented an apartment in Rome that had a loft bedroom with no railing at all. They ended up sleeping downstairs on the couch so their crawling baby wouldn't fall!

I have traveled with my LOs a lot. We moved across the country when my LO was a little over one, but we traveled back and forth a lot.
First of all, it isn't as bad as you think. Your LO will probably sleep most of the time (that is what has happened to us almost every time). Because your LO will be 9 months old, you don't have to buy a seat, so what I have done in the past is used the carseat in the stroller, and gate check it. That way you get your carseat and stroller for when you land (it's also nice as a place to put all your heavy carry ons!) I only bought my DD a seat on the plane when I had to (at two). Otherwise I travel with my LO on my lap (I figured she would want to be on my lap the whole time anyway). You won't need a base because you can put the infant carseat in the car with a normal lap belt.
What I recommend for keeping baby busy while you are flying, try books, coloring books, and even fun apps on an ipad or iphone. This is what has worked for us. Once DD got older we watched movies (well she played with the buttons on the DVD player).
You can bring premade formula on the plane in your carry on. You will just be manually patted down, if you don't want them to open the containers (which you wouldn't obviously). It's a little embarrassing and irritating (hello! unopened containers of enfamil with a baby doesn't have terrorist written on it, but whatever. better safe than sorry). And at least you won't be by yourself, that was more traumatic for my two year old than me.
Just make sure you have something for him to suck on during take off and landing. That helps a lot to. And, try to choose a flight when he is normally sleeping, that helps immensely.
And, I traveled across the country by myself with a two year old and four month old. So, at least you don't have to do that! (and I survived!)

Hope that helps!

When we traveled with LO she was 11 months. We bought her a seat on the plane because we knew it would be too much with a squirmy baby on our laps, so we had a light weight convertible car seat to make it easier to lug around the airport. We bought the Cosco, it's pretty cheap and now we just use it as an extra car seat for grandma's car. http://www.amazon.com/Cosco-Scenera-Convertible-Seat-Quigley/dp/B0084VBPHO/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1350043986&sr=1-2&keywords=cosco+scenera

I would just buy bottled water when you get there. You can't carry liquids on the plane, and you have to pay for heavy luggage so you wouldn't want to check water.

Oh gosh, I don't have any advice yet, but just thought I would commiserate as we're taking DD overseas in December. She'll be 5.5 months old when we leave, flying from Australia to the UK, and then 6 months old when we go from the UK to the US, and then almost 7 months old when we fly from the US back to Australia. I'm cringing at the thought of those 30 hr journeys with an infant! I'll be watching this thread for helpful advice.

Have you read Mrs Bee's blog post on travelling internationally with babies? She just wrote a whole series of them and I have them bookmarked for closer to the date! I think Olive was about the age your LO will be when you travel so the advice will probably be super helpful for you!

Hey gals! So here I am, it's been what...2 months since I logged in!? Holy toledo being a full-time working mom with a 4 month old is hard. There are nights that the t.v. and computer NEVER get turned on. I just crash the second he's in bed and asleep.

Anywhodiddle, that's not what I'm here for! ;-)

DH and I never got a honeymoon, my Grandma is obsessed with travel and is upset that we never got a trip. She does house trading (think "The Holiday", it's for real!) and got an offer for a house in the Bahamas. DH and I can't imagine leaving J for a week yet (he will be around 9 months at the time we're looking at going) but aren't sure how the logistics of traveling with an infant are. We obviously know it happens all the time, I could just use some major help!

Do you take the car seat and base? Buy bottled water there? (There is a small grocery store on the island we'll be on). That is a LONG flight for us, how do I not make him miserable (and us?).

Oh help. :)
