@artbee: Oh, well we just picked the wrong one, then! I took 10 minutes to fold back up, and one piece didn't really come apart. What kind do you have?

@annakate: Thanks so much! AND Good point on the diapers :)

@looch: We're staying with friends/family for most of the trip--the 3 nights in the hotel we will ask the hotel for a crib, for sure!
Thanks for the non-traditional list--I never would have remembered most of that.

@sorrycharlie: There are only 4 masks per row so only 1 lap child per row. That is why grandma had to move. My sister has twins and travelled with them when they were younger and they had to have at least the aisle between her and a baby and her hubs and a baby.

We're traveling with LO now. Brought a few toys and books, and put the mattress on the floor so LO can sleep on it. I try to travel light whenever we travel with her. This is our first time traveling with a toddler. Our hotel room has a full kitchen, so LO is currently playing with the metal pots. Yikes! Loud.

I can't say I've done it yet, but we're planning a family trip in either January (LO will be about 4 months) or June (about 9 months). We're doing disney, so they have pack n plays in the room. we probably will keep her on our laps for the plane ride instead of a carseat.

speaking of..what are the rules with that? can you have three adults in a row with a baby on a lap - or do they make one adult move to have 3 oxygen masks? just curious, because I flew southwest recently - and a mom and her mom had 3 LOs with them (2 were lap babies), and they made grandma & baby move to another row due to oxygen masks.

@pastemoo: I am terrible at road trips too, I overpack by huge amounts. I plan, but then I just toss random stuff in at the last moment!

I never bought a travel crib, we always used the hotel provided cribs. On one occasion last summer, I needed a place for my son, it was at my aunt's summer home, so I arranged to borrow something. Is that a possibility?

Usually people suggest the same kinds of gear, but in the last year, I've found some other things to be important:
extension cords with converters
power strips
batteries and screwdrivers for toys
plastic utensils and bowls
microwave sterilizer bags
clothespins for attaching blankets to make shade

I have a whole list of this kind of stuff!

Travel must-haves for our 9 month old have been...

-Baby Bjorn Travel Crib. We tried to use our pack n'play for a few months but it's so awkward and heavy so we splurged on this and it's worth it.
-Baby carrier (didn't bother with the stroller)
-One of those fabric seat things that convert (almost) any chair into a high chair
-Cozy blanket
-New toy that she's never seen for the airplane

And don't worry about packing more than a diaper bag's worth of diapers. Diapers are everywhere!

@artbee: pack n plays are SO DIFFICULT though. I am not going to go that way. I thought they were supposed to be portable. Is yours easy to set up/take down?

@Mrs. Yoyo: I am definitely looking into travel cribs!

I'm starting to consider:
travel bassinet: http://www.amazon.com/Brica-Fold-Go-Travel-Bassinet/dp/B004L2JJ6E/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1335721066&sr=8-4

travel crib:http://www.amazon.com/Phil-Teds-Traveller-Crib-Red/dp/B004H7RT5Q/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1335721066&sr=8-10

travel bed: http://www.babyhaven.com/product_results.aspx?keyword=peapod&gclid=CN65iPXM2q8CFUQQNAodK2v1_Q

And, we do have a stroller that fits with the carseat--we are bringing that. It's a car trip, not a plane trip (though I feel like a plane trip might be easier? I'm terrible at road trips!).

So far we've only had car trips, but we're flying with LO in July. We were hoping to borrow a pack n play because DH has cousins with kids there, but so far nobody has gotten back to us so we might just ship ours there. I don't think LO would sleep well at all if we coslept. We got her a seat on the plane so we're going to buy a cheap, light weight car seat. I'm planning on buying things like diapers, wipes, etc. there so I don't have to lug it all on the plane.

We travel a LOT. For the first few months, Baby Y slept in his Fisher Price Rock n Play (which is where he slept at home until 11 or 12 weeks, too). After that, we invested in the Baby Bjorn travel crib. It's a bit $$$ but it is a dream to set up and take down.

Other travel must-haves for us were the car seat stroller frame (first 6 mos) or a lightweight umbrella stroller after that time period (we have the Maclaren Quest). We also have a bag that enables us to put our convertible carseat on our backs -- helpful for airports now that he's no longer in the infant seat/stroller frame.

We traveled with LO when she was 6.5 months and it was a bit tough. We didn't bring a play yard nor did we have access to a crib of any sort so we ended up co-sleeping.
