I'd check with your airline -- some consider cribs to be baby items and will check them for free (along with carseats and strollers). We tried putting our crib inside a large suitcase one time and it made the bag exceed the 50lb maximum so we don't do that anymore :-) We have the Lotus crib and love it. Super lightweight and has a backpack feature which I strangely really like. I feel more comfortable when LO sleeps in his travel crib than a borrowed/rented one so we travel with it everywhere.

When we have done Air Bnb in Europe we have always been able to request and get a crib. We got one in Barcelona  I would try to avoid bringing it if possible. That said, some European airlines will let you check it for free (we've had good luck with Austrian Air), but you can't always count on it.

@MenagerieMama: Not sure if a lap infant gets a free bag, but I kind of doubt it. OTOH, I neglected to take note that you have a smaller version of the pack n play. And since you're only going to two destinations and prefer not to purchase another crib, I think the travel pnp would be fine!!

try and see if you can pack it in a large suitcase. it will be heavy and annoying, but at least you'll have it.

FYI, i have the graco travel pnp as well (or graco lite or whatever they call it. i also bought the lotus crib because it looked awesome. it was indeed awesome, but only a little lighter and more compact than the graco lite when packed up. i couldn't return the graco lite at that point, so sadly i decided it was not worth keeping the lotus (otherwise i totally would have gone for the sleek lotus). just in case you are thinking about trying the lotus :)

I've packed it in a large suitcase, I've also been able to check it as a separate item on a German airline.

@MenagerieMama: Another thing---if you have a credit card or aren't opposed to opening a new one, if you use the airline credit cards to book flights, you usually get priority boarding and a free checked back (I think 2 international). My husband always uses his AAdvantage card to book AA flights, so we always get a free checked back for all of LOs stuff.

@MenagerieMama: What airline are you flying on? A lot of European airlines let you check baby items for free--car seats and pack n plays.

Another option is to use Craigslist to buy a small travel crib that can be a carry on or put in a large suitcase--we really like our Lotus.

@BabyTsMom: So far the plan is fly to Barcelona, stay a week, train to Paris for another week, and then fly back. Does LO get her own checked bag as a lap infant? I think international travel gets you one free bag so maybe we could use that.

I'm sure there are rental companies, but the ones I have seen charge as much to rent for one week as buying a new one. But it's still worth asking the vrbo people just in case.

I posted about this a few months ago. I'll come back with the link, since some people had helpful advice.

Yes, it'd be a checked bag... are you staying in one location or moving every few days? If the latter, perhaps investing in a travel crib will be better in the long run? (I know you said you don't want one, but if you change your mind, the Lotus crib is amazing).

@Foodnerd81: She'll be 9.5 mo when we travel. I thought about that but since we'll be abroad I wasn't sure how to coordinate that well. I mean I suppose Amazon will ship to me in Barcelona? Ha!

How old is your Lo? If she's very young you may have more options than a toddler.

We ended up buying a new basic pnp for $40 and having it delivered to our vrbo before our arrival. It was cheaper than buying a nicer light weight one to travel with.

You can travel with the regular pnp but for us, we would have had to pay at least $25 each way to check it- more than the pnp itself.

We're planning a 2 week trip to Europe from the east coast this summer and I'm not sure what to do for LO's sleep. We have a travel PnP (I think it's just the most basic/smaller Graco version) which works great for trips, but it seems unnecessarily large and cumbersome to haul overseas for a trip. We will be doing VRBO/Airbnb type rentals, so unlikely they will have a crib for us (and also unlikely I would feel comfortable with it!). I'm not opposed to cosleeping but it just doesn't work that well for us and I think 2 weeks straight would not be doable at all. I know they make more compact/lighter travel cribs but I don't really want to buy something just for one trip (and I know DH will not want to).

I can even figure out how we'd bring the PnP, it has it's own travel bag (not super sturdy). Would we check it by itself? Does that count as a bag? Would we pack it in a checked bag?

Help!
