Just now seeing this thread! I've researched this topic b/c once I got a compact SUV and put my dog in the back, I got nervous thinking about her safety if we were rear-ended. A loose dog in the car can be really dangerous. If there's a crash, the dog can be hurt or hurt others in the car. If you're hurt and the dog is loose, it might further complicate an accident scene, and some dogs become protective of their owners, not allowing EMT to be near them.

Crates may contain the dog, but they do not usually do well in crashes.

@Bluestriped Bee: A woman I know who trains dogs to be service dogs (and used to be an engineer who tested products) recommends the Kurgo and the RuffRider. You're right--you can anchor them in that space in the cargo area. It needs to be a clip that has been tested to stand up in crashes. You could also get one of those grates that create a barrier between the cargo space and the front.

We just stick everyone in and call it good. Not exactly the safest but definitely saner for us.

With the kid (when he was still an infant) you get one dog in back and one dog next to the car seat.

Without the kid (dog in carseat for better viewing pleasure):

@MrsCB: We use this system for our 65lb lab mix and he sits in the back seat. Baby is on the way so we'll see how he does when theres a car seat in place but so far so good. In NJ its actually a law that you must have animals contained in a crate or "seat belted" into the car. I remember it being on the news and they showed some pretty horrific test dummy footage of a dog dummy going through the front windshield at just 35mph

We use a harness and belt system like this: http://www.petco.com/product/112437/Petco-Premium-Dog-Seat-Belt-Extension.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch. But we put the seat belt end through the loop sp its lower down.

I think this would be a better system for a bigger go though (ours is only 20lbs) http://www.petco.com/product/112434/Petco-Premium-Seat-Belt-Harness.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch.

@T.H.O.U.: me either, until I saw some stuff on car-seats.org about it. I know it's probably pretty unlikely that it would be a problem, but the Liberty has a high turnover risk, and I just don't want to take that chance, you know?

@bluestriped bee: I have no safety advice, but that first picture of your dog is hilarious. That is the exact face my dog gives me when I give him a bath. The "I won't bark or cry about this, but I thought you loved me and now you are tormenting me for not reason at all and I'm so disappointed."

@T.H.O.U.: the middle seat doesn't have a headrest, so yeah. She could fit through the two side ones. But that's a good idea!

We've done several long drives with the dog and never tethered him down. What about raising the rear head rests to the highest point. Could the dog that size really fit up into the back seat?

The tether looks shorter in this pic.

The other longer end is the leash. You can unhook your dog and take her out to go potty.

@allison: Yeah, I don't know about rollovers. I'm pretty sure my dog wouldn't make it out alive in a rollover. She would still get tossed around. So it's not completely safe. Sad to think about.

Yeah, I could see my dog getting tossed up front, too. Though the harness leash is about 2 feet, so my dog wouldn't go too far towards the front.

If you have anchors in the cargo hold that are further back, maybe that would prevent your dog from getting close to the back seat area. I do know my car has anchors on the floor in the cargo area (near the gate) that I could attach the zipline to.

ETA: Oh, to answer your question, my dog is able to lay down with the slack from the harness. She can move side to side, too.

Also, with the zipline, I love it because it prevents my dog from jumping out as soon as I open the door. So there isn't too much slack.

Haha. I have a pic.

This picture is pretty accurate with the expression on my dog. My dog is not fond of being harnessed and zip lined in. But, at least, I know she is safe.

@bluestriped bee: interesting! I could probably attach it to the seat latches, but I'm not sure it would work, in the event of an accident like a rollover, to keep the dog from coming over the back of the seat? I'd want to leave enough slack in the leash/harness/whatever for her to be able to lay down back there (it's an 8 hour trip).

What do you think?

@allison: What about getting one of these?
http://www.amazon.com/Kurgo-Automobile-Zip-Line-Large-Pounds/dp/B00164SZI8/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1371686732&sr=1-4&keywords=zipline+dog

It's a 'seat belt' for dogs. It's a zipline for dogs.

I have one and we go on a lot of road trips so I got this to make sure my dog is restrained if we get in an accident. I don't want her flying out the front window.

We don't have kids, so my dog goes in the back seat. When we have kids, my dog will probably go in back back (in the cargo area.) Right now, the zipline part is attached to the handles (like where shirts can be hung). I need to check my CRV to see if there is a location in the cargo hold that the zipline can be attached to.

Anyway, it might restrain your dog better than a barrier will.

ETA: In your case, if a force from an accident is so strong, couldn't the barrier be tossed forward and could harm your baby?

You should look into the zipline.

We're driving my 07 Jeep Liberty to Florida in one month. "We" is DH, me, LO (will be 5.5 months), and our 70 lb labrador.

I've been doing a lot of carseat research lately, and one thing I keep coming across, regarding general child car safety, is to eliminate all projectiles from the vehicle, as even the smallest thing, if moving at a high speed, can cause serious damage to the baby (or us). So...I guess a 70 lb dog qualifies for an unsafe projectile, eh? She usually rides in the cargo area, but we don't have a pet barrier between the backseat and the cargo section. The ones I've seen are either really expensive or seem flimsy. Here are two I'm entertaining:

http://www.amazon.com/Petego-Walky-Barrier-Automotive-Safety/dp/B0039U7NOO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

http://www.amazon.com/WeatherTech-60010-Tubular-Pet-Barrier/dp/B0007TJ7GW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371685291&sr=8-1&keywords=weathertech+pet+barrier

The first one seems safer, because it attaches to the headrests. The second one is just tension-rods. But it seems like both are not really secure enough to not worry about them unattaching and projectiling, during an accident!

I'm getting very paranoid, and I don't know what to do. A crate won't fit in the back, so that's out. Please help me!
