Great suggestions already given, but just wanted to add that we went to the Discovery Science Center last weekend and paid a little extra for the current Bubblefest exhibit and show. It was great! We actually couldn't make it into the actual museum afterwards though, but my friend with a 2 yo said that while there's a lot for the older kid crowd, there were also a few age-appropriate things to do for her son. Their website doesn't cover a lot of what there's to do, but yelp has a bit more pictures.

Santa Anna Zoo is great for little ones! Not too huge to explore, with a good number of animals to see.

Disneyland and CA Adventure are actually free for kids under 3 years old (someone posted that the cutoff is 2 yo; it's 3 yo). Adult tickets are expensive though, and in July, with the summer crowds and 2 under 2, it might not be worth it for just one day... but Downtown Disney is free for everyone... your toddler might like the Lego Store and Rainforest Cafe.

Pretend City is pretty cool... large indoor playground where kids can grocery shop, play doctor, ride cars around, be a farmer... There's also a water play area... I forgot what else, but it's great for your toddler, and there's a little infant section also.

@matador84: You are near me! Oh my gosh... I could go on forever. If you tell me more specifically what you want to do, I'd plan your whole itinerary for you.

My sister takes my niece to Pretend City all the time, although I have no clue what it is and don't know if there is anything special about it that you can't find in your hometown.

Your older child would love Disneyland and like Mrs. Bee said, kids under two are free. If Disneyland is still too expensive, maybe check out Knotts Berry Farm.

I think every child and adult should make it to the beach. I personally love Corona Del Mar's beach. Its smaller and very family friendly. There are also Tide Pools. (For you and your hubs: the Quiet Woman is one of my fav bars. The Place is a super chill dive bar. And Bandera's has the best beef ribs and jalapeno corn bread ever.)

Maybe Rubies Diner on the end of Balboa or Huntington Beach piers would be fun.

The Discovery Science Center is right across from the Santa Ana Zoo.

Irvine Park is also really fun for kids. My niece rides the ponies there all the time. http://www.irvineparkrailroad.com/content/rides--attractions

Farrell's Ice Cream in Brea.

Angel's baseball game!!

Or put the kids in a stroller and walk around Fashion Island with your hubs. Treat yourself, lady!! (Plus, there is a large koi pond that kids go crazy over.)

@matador84: there is an awesome indoor playspace called little prince cafe right by fullerton in buena park:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/little-prince-kids-cafe-buena-park

also you could do disneyland since kids under 2 are free! tickets are crazy expensive... a 2 year old could still have fun.

there is the santa ana zoo. it's a little zoo but close by and good for a toddler.
