@locavore_mama: yeah, I flew to CA with M twice and didn't check anything both times. Needed to make sure my video monitor and white noise machines didn't get lost!
I think you'll be okay not checking anything in!!

@chopsuey: Hmmmm if you can get through ATL with a rolling and stroller I feel like I should be able to get through my tiny airport and JFK with a backpack and stroller!
I really don't want to deal with JFK checked package. They are so notorious for losing shit.

@locavore_mama: i don't have to tilt my rolly luggage if that makes sense. So I positioned it so I could hold the handle of the luggage and one of the handles of the stroller with one hand.
It was a pita! But I didn't want to check my luggage in so I just dealt with it.

Thanks everyone!
I think I'm going to use my oversized backpack and check that. And bring a stroller plus diaper bag.
That way I will still have my hands at JFK because my SIL won't be parking.

@chopsuey: how did you get through the airport with a toddler, rolling suitcase and stroller?! Especially yours because you have to take the rail to get in and out!

We've taken 13 round trip domestic flights and 1 international trip with our now 16.5 month old. We NEVER checked pre kid but now, check every time and don't regret it. My advice:

Do NOT check anything you MUST have in case your luggage is lost (only item that was ever lost was our car seat, for a few hours and airline had a spare for us).

Babywear. Leave stroller, carseat at home when possible. This is great because you don't have to remove baby when going through security, they just swipe your hands for testing, amazing.

Bring only your diaper bag/backpack on the plane.

Inflight entertainment: Best of Elmo 2 on the iPad (depends on age of course). This is used only when we travel, and it's a miracle.

Good luck!

This was my concern on a long flight I took alone with my toddler - but I didn't really have a choice. So I checked my bag, and seriously, it was ZERO hassle. At the airport, we got off the plane, used the restroom quickly, found my husband, and walked to the baggage claim. Elapsed time from landing, MAYBE 20 minutes. When we got down there, EVERYONE else had already gotten their bags, and the carousel was turned off. My bag and a few others were set off to the side, and everyone else was long gone. And this was only 20 minutes after landing!

My experience coming home was the same. Almost zero wait. Paying to check was irritating, but besides that, it was very easy.

I would say #3 is the best bet if it's an hour. I love gate checking baby stuff. For Christmas, we're gate checking the stroller. I carry the diaper bag and provisions. DH takes the rolling luggage with a change of clothes for each of us just in case. It worked well on the first trip. Probably when we add another LO, I'd wear them through security.

@kiddosc: she's never been a fan of babywearing so we don't.

@looch: @mrsmate: we're going to visit my family and my nephew is the same age. My SIL has an extra car seat so I really do not need any extra provisions. Just what I would need for the airport and inflight entertainment.

When I fly solo with E I wear him on the front, carry a backpack as a diaper bag on my back and then I check a bag. But it you're trying to avoid checked bag costs and it's a quick trip it would be easy enough to just pull a rolling carry-on. Wearing E is what saves my sanity in the airport. They don't make me take him off through security, so it's so much easier. Traveling is the only time I wear him too, but there's so much to look at that he doesn't seem to mind too much.

If you definitely don't want to check a bag I would take the backpack because those are easier to fit into the overhead. But definitely take a stroller and gate check it. You will want to have the option to lock LO in place if you are busy with other things and don't want to worry about her running away.

Is she small enough that you can possibly wear her? When I fly alone with LO I wear her on my front, put my diaper bag on my back (PPB Box Backpack) and then I pull a carry on size rolling suitcase, with possibly a tote bag as well if I need it. But my parents have a stroller so I don't need to bring one with me to use for the trip.

If it's just an hour, I would do #2 or #3... wouldn't be worth the hassle (and potential loss of your checked bag!) for such a short trip! Just remember to get there super early and you'll be all good.

If you can fit everything in a back pack then go for it! You can put your LO In the stroller, wear the back pack and hang the diaper bag on the stroller. Gate check the stroller and take the 2 bags on board with you!

I voted #3 only because you said hate checking luggage, but I think any of you options would work out ok for you. It kind of hinges on whether you are willing to sweat a little. If I wanted the least amount of anxiety, I would check the bag. This give you most amount of freedom in the terminal. If it is more important to avoid any waiting time to pick up luggage, I would do the backpack.

It depends on if your toddler can walk, how long you are gone, what gear you'll need at your destination...many variables!

When I took my (walking, 14.5mo) DD to Korea for a month, I needed to bring everything.

I checked:
rolling duffel
BabyBjorn crib

I gate checked:
umbrella stroller
carseat (if no empty seats on the flight, before I knew better)

I carried on:
diaper bag
another personal bag bc diaper bag not big enough for everything we needed for the long journey (and I didn't want to take one giant bag bc I needed a diaper bag for everyday use)

I wore my Ergo all the time, whether DD was in it or not.

Just take your time doing everything and know it probably won't be the best day of your life.

I took an umbrella stroller + diaper bag + small rolling suitcase. It wasn't bad! Checked the stroller at the gate, diaper bag is a messenger.
I hate checking luggage in too.
People were really helpful all the times I traveled alone.

For the more experienced mamas with traveling with a toddler.

Do you typically check your luggage?

I hate checking luggage and having to wait for it at the carousel.
But am I crazy for even thinking about not checking it??
I will be flying in and out of JFK, which is crazy to begin with, on a holiday. And it's only a hour flight.

My options are:
1) Don't check a rolling suitcase small enough for overhead but no stroller and a diaper bag
2) Check rolling suitcase, bring stroller and a diaper bag
3) use a oversized backpack small enough for overhead and don't check, stroller and diaper bag.
