We drove LO 7 hours when she was about 8 weeks. I was scared too but it will be OK!!! When they are that young they just sleep and sleep. Def get her in the car often beforehand to get her used to it. I would personally sit with her in the back in case she freaks out. Keep a bag handy with a cooler bag of bottles or do a emergency on the road nursing session. Diapers, wipes, easily accessible.

Remember to bring whatever she will be sleeping in. An extra pack of diapers and wipes. A bouncer bc it will be smaller to bring than a swing. A carrier if you will use one. A play mat bc it's small and easily packed. A paci for those FREAK out sessions.

And oh we were prepared for 2-3 hour stops but if she was sleeping we kept going unless we needed to stop for gas!!!

We did a road trip when Vi was 7 weeks - two days driving each way, week long hotel stay. It went great!

You can do it! :)

as long as your baby isn't terribly colicky and/or hate their carseat, i think it will be fine.

we did a 8 hour drive + wedding/5 days at in-laws + 5 hour drive + wedding/3 days at hotel...and then a 13 hour return trip in 2 days. with a 3.5 week old. i still have no clue why i thought it would be a good idea, but it went fine and was a great way to introduce LO to a bunch of family & friends :)

at that age, LO slept a lot in the car, and we just took a break every 2-3 hours to feed her and get some fresh air. it took longer than normal, obvs, but i think we only had to sit in the backseat with her once?

as for packing, i just bought diapers/wipes when i got where i was going. i didn't take hardly any real toys, and planned on doing laundry or buying a pack of cheap onesies if we had unplanned disasters :) practically everywhere has a target or walmart or somewhere to buy essentials if you forget something or run out.

For long car rides, I sit in the back, I prefer to be back there rather than either stopping and getting out or having to reach back without my seatbelt on, esp. since my son's rear facing at 2.5 years old.

I also pack a "car bag" of stuff we might need, so I dont have to unpack our gear.

@Alivoo01: That is a whole other issue--I have not been in the car for than 20 minutes since I had baby. And with my recovery (third degree tear), I am dreading all that time sitting! I will be bringing lots of pillows!!

Good thread!! We're thinking about taking a 3 hour trip to a wedding when DS is about 3 weeks old! I'm not even sure I'll be ready for the trip, but guess we'll find out. HA!

@Adira: Thank you--haha I am nervous too! When we planned this months ago it seemed like such a good idea...now...not so much! He does pretty well in the car seat--falls asleep, but we have only really run errands at this point!

@chopsuey119: great idea about the mirror, It would be sad to leave DH up there all alone! I will check out this one, thanks for the suggestion.

The good news is there is laundry in each place we are staying, thank goodness!

We did a 5 hour road trip at 7 weeks and it went great! We packed everything under the sun (lits of clothes changes, diapers and wipes) since we were driving and it made me feel much better. I sat in the front seat.

Does your LO like the car seat? DD hated it so our car trip when she was 2 months old was kinda miserable.

DS on the other hand loves being in the car and always falls asleep.

Since the baby's so young I don't think you need to pack too much. Just the basics..? (diapers, wipes, clothes, towel, burp clothes, swaddle blankets, paci if he takes one) Your DH might get a little lonely sitting up front by himself :) As long as your baby's okay I would probably get a mirror so you can see him and sit up front.

We have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Britax-USA-S864600-Back-Mirror/dp/B008HCXIU2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372425008&sr=8-1&keywords=britax+mirror

There's no way this will fly off if you secure it properly and I love it. :) My son is so quiet in the car it's nice to be able to see him.

Have fun!! And safe travels :)

Yikes! I'm nervous for you, haha! How does he usually do in the car? If he's usually okay in the car, I don't think it's necessary for you to sit in the back seat, though you might have to move back there if he's being fussy.

Luckily babies that young don't need a whole lot. Somewhere to sleep (pack n' play maybe?), clothes (bring lots of extra clothes), diapers, wipes, blankets, bibs, burp cloths. Does he take a pacifier? Bring a couple of those if so. Is he FF or BF? If FF, bring formula, bottles, bottle cleaner, etc. If BF, you'll want your nursing pillow (if you have one), and any stuff for you (nipple shields, lanolin, etc). How does he sleep at night? Maybe bring a white noise machine if he's used to that.

I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff... but good luck on your trip!

I am excited and anxious about a 10-day trip we are taking starting next week. We will be driving from our place to a house where his parents are staying for the summer about 4 hours away. A few days later we will drive another couple of hours to go to a wedding, and we are staying in a cottage with my parents. Then we have a 6-7 hour trip back to our apartment.

I am overwhelmed even thinking about creating a packing list for this trip let alone packing itself. Any trips for a car trip with a baby that young? (He will be just a month when we leave). Should I sit in the backseat? Any packing musts that I might not think of? Tell me it will be OK!
