@littlek: If you have time to watch it, this is a good webinar on the topic from a lactation consultant: https://connectpro84736905.adobeconnect.com/_a955655781/p22u03nkmn2/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal

@brownie: I have never had them question the ice I brought through security. I think its understood that it obviously needs to be kept cold!

Please do not check it! That would be horrible if your luggage was lost or delayed!

I have flown several times with milk and without my baby. It works pretty well.

At the hotel, I try to ask for a mini fridge if possible. If not, I carry a cooler that I take to the ice machine and fill up twice a day. On the way home, I pack the cooler and bags of milk extra well. Remember, you can always ask the food vendors past security for extra ice.

Sometimes TSA has asked me to put the bottles/bags into the screen machine, othertimes they haven't even opened the cooler. You know how consistent they are!

For packing, I have learned that a hard plastic cooler is better (even though more of a pain to pack) because as ice melts it can't leak. The soft sided coolers do not hold water. Also, before leaving, I bring several gallon size zip lock bags with me for packing ice.

It is considered medical even if the baby isn't there. So you can carry it on. But checking it may be less stressful. Of course, if there is a delay you can't mess with checked bags BUT if you carry it on you can add more ice from one of the food joints.

The ice may be an issue (as it may melt and be an additional liquid. But some people have had success with getting ice after going through security.

TSA should allow it through even without the baby present.

Since you are going to be gone an entire week, I'd suggest packing some on dry-ice and shipping it home so DH can use it for your LO. You could then probably carry on the rest

I personally would freeze it and pack it in checked baggage. Mrs. Bee recommended the Pack It Freeze and Go bags- I got one and I love it! You freeze the bag, pack the frozen milk and it stays frozen all day (just line the bag with a plastic bag just in case!).

Here is the TSA's link for breastmilk that I used for packing- http://www.tsa.gov/traveling-formula-breast-milk-and-juice

and - http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/traveling-children

I'm not sure about carry on without the baby, but when we flew with the baby, there was no limit to how much we could carry on. I just declared that I had milk for the baby when we went through security, they pulled us aside to scan the milk and it was no big deal.

I just flew with breastmilk. If you take it as a carry on then they need to put each bottle in a machine that I guess detects whether or not it's full of explosives. They never open the bottle, they just set each one individually in the machine, and maybe it works as some sort of light spectrum thing. Anyway, if you're going to have a lot of bottles, then that process could be a pain in the butt. I would check the milk if I didn't have LO with me.

I believe you can take it as a carry on, they will just have to pass this slip of paper over it to make sure it isn't dangerous (they don't touch anything, you open the bottle, I believe).
People I know who have done it usually overnighted a stash at some point halfway through the trip. I think Fed Ex or whoever can provide you with the styrofoam shipping container and dry ice?

Are you allowed to take that much breastmilk on as a carry on? If so, I would pack with dry ice and take it on the plane with me

So, I start my new job next week and Tuesday I have to go to San Diego for a week of training. LO is staying home with daddy and I'm pumping while I'm there. So, I will have quite a bit of milk to bring home with me. What is the best way to get this milk home? Should I check the milk and pack it with ice? Or should I carry on with ice? Thoughts??
