@aprk: these are my thoughts. It's no secret that we use cloth, and everyone on the trip has been at our home and changed them. So I don't feel like we need to change our routine at all. Especially around family.

DH is very vocal about loving our cloth diapers, so the fact that this was even a conversation threw me for a loop! We still have time to figure it out though. If he still has an issue with it closer to the trip, we will probably just do disposables. As some o you have pointed out, it's not worth him being uncomfortable on the trip.

Yeah, if you're just dead set on them but can't work this out, it would be easy to bring your entire stash. That ought to be 2-4 days worth, and then you just take them home to wash them, and fill the gap with disposables. Seems like a good compromise that totally makes him happy.

@MrsRoo: On one trip I did the wash overnight and the dry during the takes-so-long-to-leave morning. That was a night we spent at a friend's house. The other nights were in a hotel.

On another trip, I did the laundry and just played with my son nearby.

On yet another trip I just used them till we ran out--then used flushable gdiaper inserts in our covers and did the laundry at home.

I do recommend to double wet bag the laudry as it gets rank.

I've cloth diapered on several trips, from 1-4 nights. So far, for trips that long, I don't usually have to wash on the trip. Nobody has minded if I do need to, though. I would ask if it'll make people more comfortable, but I don't even find it inconvenient to travel with cloth. I just use a big zippered wet bag.

There's only been a couple people in my circle who cloth diapered, so most don't know anything about it. And with that lack of knowledge comes "ewwwwwwwwww". If the same holds true in your area and your DH has picked up on that, I can see why he'd be loath to bring attention to it.

There's a way bigger issue at play here, it seems, if he is comfortable with your parenting choices at home but "embarrassed" about them in public/with family.

Also, this is an opportunity for education if people don't understand how cloth diapers work when you wash them. Why hide it, if this is what you do with your baby?

Given the short timeframe, I would honestly just do disposables. It will be easier for you and potentially save others from unsavory feelings that, while they might not be justified, could still cause some awkwardness.

Mmm.. I would just bring disposables. You never know how people might really feel about it. And even though it's a short trip, it's amazing how many times people will want to do laundry. Towels, kitchen towels, etc. If your DH feels awkward about it, I would just do the disposables.

I don't really get it... wouldn't it make him a lot happier, for just the cost of a few diapers? If there's a broader point of principle then I get it, but otherwise I'm not quite there yet.

I'm easily embarrassed so I can relate to his request...

I don't cloth diaper, but in general I try to pick my battles (though I totally understand being stubborn and wanting to prove your rightness!). In this case I'd just go with my husband; clearly something makes him uncomfortable about it and I wouldn't want him worrying about something relatively minor during what's supposed to be a relaxing vacation. It's only 4 days after all.

Just a third option here, you could use liners for the weekend. Personally I'd just keep going with cloth. We've done both types of trips (doing cloth or using disposables). It was no harder for me to stick the cloth diapers in a wet bag than a disposable into a trash can and doing the laundry didn't cramp our style at all.

Now when we've visited somewhere for just a quick weekend trip or had a jammed packed activity list, it was easier to do disposables.

I think if your MIL is fine than go for it! We couldn't use our washer for a couple days unexpectedly awhile back and my mom was horrified when I asked her if I could bring our diapers over to wash. I didn't get it at all. I ended up going over to another CD friend's house!

@jmarionsmith: ding ding ding!! I think you nailed it. We had a conversation about it today (he talked to his mom and she of course said its no big deal to bring the cloth). He's definitely being weird about the attention being on us about the cloth.

@Modern Daisy: that's a very good point. I didn't even think about the machine being broken... Of that happens we will just run to the store I guess. I don't want to pack all my cloth and disposables.

@pastemoo: you're my hero! Diaper laundry is such a part of my routine now that I hardly think about it, but I am wondering about the logistics of traveling with them and still feeling like I'm on vacation. Was it a hassle to find the time during travel to wash? Or do you have enough diapers that you can go that long between washes?

I would ask before hand--and explain why... then I would bring them. We just finished a 5 day road trip in cloth, and a 5 day plane trip in cloth just before that. Last time he was in sposies was at 6 weeks old for a 1.5 week trip and he was between sizes and the bigger size hadn't come in yet.

If I were you, I would send my MIL an email just to make sure it's okay to use your CD's in the shared washer/dryer, but even if she says yes I would also bring disposables just in case. There's a chance you will change your mind once you get there for convenience, or if someone else makes a stink (no pun intended) or there's always the off-chance the machine will be broken. So I would just be prepared to do either regardless.

I'm curious - how would they feel if your LO had a poopy accident and got it all over what they were wearing? Are you not allowed to wash them then? Personally I'd bring disposables for convenience, but I doubt over a long weekend anyone will even want to use the washer/dryer and it'll be a non-issue.

@aprk: My thoughts exactly!

@HabesBabe: We don't have enough diapers to go 4 days without washing, or else that's what we would do and it would be a no brainer! My inlaws and I are very close, so I'm sure they would tell me if they had any issues with it. You do make a good point about DH being uncomfortable, though. I do have a habit of being ridiculously stubborn if I believe I'm right. I just want to know what his sudden discomfort is all about!

When we went on a long holiday, I brought along a large hanging wetbag and just washed everything once we got home... would that be an option?

I would bring disposables if CDing made anyone on the trip uncomfortable-- including my husband. He might has issues with it himself, or he might be covering up for the in-laws (would they really tell you that it made them uneasy?), or he just doesn't want to spend his vacation time thinking about diapers. In any case, if he is objecting, I wouldn't bother investigating and just buy a pack of Huggies.

I've been doing disposables on vacations, but the only W/D available to me were ones I had to pay for, which would have cost me more than the disposables I bought. So, that was a no-brainer. I'd prefer to use CDs though, if I had a W/D available to me for free!

I don't have a problem buying the disposables if anyone has an issue, but I would definitely prefer to avoid it and stick with what we know, you know?

I would ask the in-laws to see how they feel. If they are cool with it, i'd bring the diapers. Couldn't you just volunteer to do the laundry? I mean, once you do a soak, there isn't really poop to deal with anyways.

If there's an issue, i'd bring a pack of disposables. It won't be a big deal.

I bet if you talk to them about it with him, they'll say it's no big deal and go right ahead. Maybe hearing it from them that it's not a big deal will help.

If they have an issue with it, though, I wouldn't push it...just get a pack of disposables.
