@MamaCate: yes that's what I wanted to avoid too! Plus I wasn't sure if she would like the balance bike if she had a tricycle. I would imagine the tricycle is more "fun" because it's got pedals.

@lamariniere: cool, thanks for the feedback! I guess maybe we will give it a try and see if she gets the hang of it.

I think it really depends on the kid. We have a balance bike, but my son never really got the hang of it (he was big enough for it around age 2). But we bought him a real bike with pedals and training wheels and he can ride it pretty well. No idea when we'll take the training wheels off of it though.

I saw an 18 month old rocking a balance bike! I'm thinking of getting one for my DD for Christmas at 23 months.

@sunny: we got LO a push trike (the fisher price one) for Christmas right after she turned one. Our push trike does not have pedals so it is suitable for little little kids. She liked it for brief periods but never loved it.

We then got a balance bike as her big gift when she turned two. She asked for a bike so that is what we went with. I have been happy with it and she does ride on occasion, but she still does not do the balancing part with picking her feet up. She is still young but is also quite cautious.

So maybe a push trike for the summer and then see? I wanted to avoid spending $100 on a trike and then the same amount for a bike 6 months later.

I've been reading about balance bikes and it seems like the new trend is to have kids learn to balance on balance bikes and then proceed to a normal pedal bike (no training wheels) when they are ready and to skip the tricycle all together.

I think my LO is too young for a balance bike (or maybe she isn't? She's 22 months), so I was planning on getting a push trike for the summer, but I don't think she is tall enough to reach the pedals yet.

Should I skip the push trike altogether then, since she won't really use it as a tricycle since I think we might want to go the balance bike route?

What will you be doing? Getting a push tricycle and balance bike, or just going with 1 or the other?
