I live in Alaska and flying between here and the Lower 48 is such a pain, but I don't remember it being that much worse while pregnant. I think the multiple layovers are worse than long flights. If you fly first class you get to use the first class lounges in the airports though (if they have them), which helps a lot.

I think dogsledding would be fine at 4 months, though that may not be the official recommendation.

I flew to Taiwan when I was 19 weeks pregnant. 15 hour flight there and 12 on the way home. It was an overnight flight too. I was definitely tired but it wasn't a big deal. Even did a lot of walking while there and I was fine. Just some swollen ankles. We did upgrade our flight seats, not first class, but a step above coach and it was definitely worth the extra expense. Made the flight much better.

You will be fine. Have fun! you can't do the hot springs tho.

We flew to Seattle and cruised to Alaska at almost 5 months pregnant - it was wonderful. It didn't hurt to walk around as I hadn't gained too much weight at that point and the scenery was amazing! Have fun!

@Mrs. Blue: Wow, you are very specifically able to answer my question! :) We are definitely planning to go now. I am looking into trip insurance in case something happens where the dr recommends I don't go, but it looks like most insurance excludes pregnancy related things anyway, so we'll probably just take our chances. I'm SO excited!

Now to figure out if I'm allowed to go dog sledding...

Did I miss the pregnancy announcement?!?! Huge congrats!!!!

I would definitely go, take some saltines though in case you get morning sickness and try to sleep on the plane if you can. Oh, and I've heard jolly ranchers help with m/s too.

Gogogogo! I went to New Zealand in my first tri and am so glad I did. The flight was not a big deal.

I do think hot springs are supposedly a no-go.

Awesome-- I'm not crazy and we are going to do it!

Follow up question-- hot springs (104+ degrees) are off limits, right? Normally I'd just put my legs in but I have this strange feeling that sitting outside in Alaska with only my legs in the hot water would be just a little cold... They have a cooler 'family' pool that I can do, so if that's all I miss out on, whatever.

@sslm: You know, I read about sour on here (maybe from you?) so I totally bought a thing of Icebreakers Sours and ate them non stop on take off and landing on my trip home! People around me must have thought I was nuts, but not as much as the people around me when I almost lost it on the first landing-- like had the barf bag in my hands just in case! Sours are FINE.

@Foodnerd81: Sour made my sickness tolerable, so both ways I ate an entire bag of sour patch kids... not my proudest moment :P Glad to hear your ms is letting up! I had it until 18 weeks and wouldn't wish that on anyone...

@sslm: Yeah, we flew at weeks 8-9 or so and it was ROUGH but I was pretty much at my worst for nausea then. It took a lot out of me-- like I felt awful for a full day after we got there, but it was just the morning sickness, that thankfully, seems to be slowly making its way out.

I think it would be fine! I travelled by plane at 15 and 16 weeks and felt fine, even though I still had horrible morning sickness. You just need to make sure to drink a ton of water, and get up every 1.5-2 hours and walk up and down the aisles a bit.

@chopsuey119: Absolutely-- I refused to do a red eye pregnant in coach! DH's dad is giving us miles for Christmas and we can do the first/business class at least one way. (Maybe 2, it is for his first grandchild... :)

I'm so glad everyone says to do it! I think we are going to go ahead and get things booked soon! Just have to make sure we are covered in case for some reason I can't or am advised not to do it when it gets closer.

Just read that the flight is 12 hours. I would upgrade to first class if you have the points for sure! Would also get up every so many hours to walk around.
Hope you end up going and have fun!

We went to California when I was about 23 weeks and it was a great trip! The flights were about 6 hours I think. I just got up to walk around a few times. We were able to do everything we wanted and walked around a lot. I was definitely more tired that I would have been normally but it was fine. As long as you're feeling well go for it!

I would definitely go! 4 months pregnant isn't bad.
I traveled at 20 weeks when I was pregnant with my DD (5 hour flight) and was completely fine. Not tired and the flight went well.

Traveled again at around 20 weeks when I was pregnant with DS. Omg the flight was misery since I had my DD on my lap. I would have been fine if she had her own seat.

I would go! At 4 months my first trimester tiredness and feeling sick had passed and I was feeling really good. The flights and red eye will probably be tiring, but I would go and enjoy yourself on the trip! It sounds awesome! Also, at 4 months I wasn't feeling huge or really uncomfortable so that is a plus also.

DH and I have been planning to go to Alaska as our last hurrah trip before baby for a while. Now that we are actually at the point of planning it, I'm worried that I'm being too ambitious. I'll be just about 4 months pregnant at the time we want to go, in March. People who have been at least 4 months pregnant-- could you have handled a trip like that, including the long flights?

My main concern really is the flights. While there, DH would ski for some days and I would take it pretty easy, so I'm pretty sure that would be fine. But the flights are about 12 hours each way when you factor in layovers. The return flight will have to include a red eye, but we could use points for first class, which I think would be better overall than a non-red eye in coach. Am I crazy? We REALLY want to go and I know we won't be able to for a while after the baby gets here, but there is no point in going if I'll be miserable.

The midwife did say as long as everything progresses normally, there was no issue on her end, and we would purchase some kind of trip insurance in case we had to cancel for any reason, plus I'll make sure we have proper medical insurance in case I need to get to a good hospital asap or anything like that. I told DH I couldn't go forward with the plans until I turned to you ladies :)
