@Mrs Green Grass: idk if you’re up for this, but since you mentioned going to Palo Alto I thought I’d throw it out there.

There’s a great children’s bookstore in Los Altos called Linden Tree books. Downtown Los Altos is a super cute little downtown and the bookstore is amazing. Adorable and full of super informative booksellers. It’s been around like 30 years, but moved to a newer location probably 10 years ago?

@Mrs Green Grass: BiRite should be fine for ice cream. There is usually a line at Tartine and you will wait if you want a table, but it moves quickly if you just take the delicious pastries to go and eat outside. Also if it’s a weekday it shouldn't be bad. You will never have a better bread pudding (made from stale croissants) or anything really than Tartine.

If you decide to go to the Ferry Building, I would get a baguette from Acme, get some amazing charcuterie from Boccalone (the cooked ham is amazing), and sit out on the water on a bench if it’s nice out. And find a cute dessert if you want! And for sure get a bottle of Stonehouse lemon olive oil to take home with you - it’s incredible.

If you need to eat inside at Ferry, Gott’s is good for both kids and grown ups. The ahi burger and deep fried Brussels Sprouts are amazing and they have ridiculous shakes.

Pretty much any place in North Beach has great simple pasta. Or if you want quick, the focaccia thick square slices of pizza from Golden Boy are so tasty too (get the clam pizza!)

If you want really yummy noodles and dumplings, it’s sorta out of the way, but King of Noodles in the Inner Sunset is my favorite.

If you're going to be in San Carlos and you're not opposed to going to the South Bay, the San Jose children's museum and Happy Hollow Park and Zoo is a lot of fun for littles. My kids had a great time at both places last summer and parking was easy for both places.

In the city proper, you can take your kid to the Cable Car Museum, the Children's Creativity Museum, and the Academy of Sciences. From where you are staying, you're not super far from the Mission, so you could have something delicious at Tartine to eat and/or get ice cream at Bi-Rite.

@birdofafeather: I don’t know about the safe rider vest! Sounds like it would solve all issues. I think he would love the fortune cookies. I’m actually not sure about the pier either since we have piers, seals, and ghiradelli here! But we’ll see.

I just took Row solo last month! We were only in the city for a day and I didn’t bring a stroller (would have been impossible there anyway!). We walked a decent amount but also took the BART to the ferry building, walked through Chinatown and went to the fortune cookie factory to see how they’re made and put our own fortunes in some (a 15 minute stop maybe!). We took Lyft’s a fair amount too so I actually bought a safe rider vest to use as I didn’t want to carry around a booster the whole time. She loved using it and I was super happy too! Wish we still lived nearby or I’d let you borrow it!

She really wanted to ride the cable car so we did wait in line down by Ghiradelli Square (about 45 minutes on a Saturday afternoon) and it was highlight for her. I thought we’d see the pier/seals, etc but she didn’t care about any of that (and I’ve been enough on my own that I had no stake in it).

Other than that, SF isn’t as easy to get around with kids as other places I’ve gone but I do think that had I more time, I could have figured out better public transport options that didn’t require the vest/booster.

Have fun!

@Corduroy: @Mrs. Turtle: I love Sausalito so that sounds like a great idea!

@skipra: I like He idea of a ferry across too. I’m in SoCal and it’s not warm by any means, but if we dressed warmly maybe?

@erinbaderin: LO loves chocolate so we’ll definitely have to hit up ghiradelli!

I ditto the recommendation for the Bay Area Discovery Museum. I got turned around on the way there and ended up at a scenic view stop for the GG bridge. We got to see the “zipper car” change the traffic lanes. More fun for me than her but super cool to watch. You also get a great view of the bridge from the museum.

How about looking at the bridge by boat? Maybe a ferry to Sausalito?
Eta I just saw that youre going next week. Ferry maybe if it's warm enough. I am not in ca so I have no clue how the weather is now!

If you could borrow a car what about the Monterey Bay aquarium? The only other things I remember from my trip there are the sea lions and the Ghiradelli store (which might be fun with a 5 year old! Sundaes!)

If you want to cross the bridge, the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito is pretty wonderful. In the city the California Academy of Sciences is so cool and interesting for all ages. Those are my favorites when we visit.

I’m taking DS to the Bay Area next week and i’d love some recs. I’ve been there many times and will be staying with friends in San Carlos and in the city (Potrero Hill). LO is not a great long-walker. I could probably borrow a car but don’t really want one in the city. I’m thinking Exploratorium (is that still cool?), cable car/fisherman’s wharf. I’m not sure the best way to show him the Golden Gate Bridge, he won’t want to walk across. Thoughts? We are going T-F in a week. Do they have Uber Family?
