@Coffee-lover: i don't know if this will help, but one time i got a prenatal massage and the therapist told me to sleep with pillows under the top arm as well (like hugging the snoogle, i guess). the twisting of the top arm down towards the bed can strain your hip. anyway, i hope you get some good tips and good sleep soon!

I generally always fall asleep on my side (pregnant or not) but usually end up on my back. I'm 24 weeks and have been sleeping with a pillow between my knees and one behind my back to help keep me on my side. I can't wait to sleep on my back again!

I have found that the couch relieves the pain. So I sometimes move to it for an hour and then go back in bed. When I got further along the first pregnancy I slept in a recliner

I have the snoogle, it really helps more than regular pillows will but sleep only gets more uncomfortable unfortunately.. I miss the nights I would crawl into bed and have a sign of relief because it felt so good to lay down. Now it is just annoying getting in the right sleeping position...

@Coffee-lover: In my first pregnancy I thought that a pregnancy pillow would force me to sleep on my side, as recommended to help the baby, but I always end up on my back. Even all wrapped up in my snoogle. I think sleep is the most important thing, so whatever way you can get it, do that. My baby is now over 14 months old so being pregnant again, I'm trying to take it easy on myself and know that if I sleep on my back it's ok.

Like some others have said, you can try sleeping on your back. If laying on your back is causing any issues, you will feel it. I do a combination of sleeping on my back, almost completely on my stomach with a pillow under my belly, or on my side. Did the same last pregnancy and never had an issue. Good luck!

@Coffee-lover: I had this too when I was pregnant. It was awful. I used a foam mattress topper and it help a little. I know it's not a good idea to sleep on your back during pregnancy. But when I talked to my OBGYN in regards to that, she said I could prop myself up with pillows so that I'm not right on my back but laying more at an angle. But she still recommended to try to sleep on my side for the most part. She also showed me some stretches to do, which I don't remember (Sorry). Maybe you can ask your OB, about some stretches you can do in the morning and before you go to bed.

I slept on my back until it got uncomfortable just before 30 weeks. I wouldn't have been able to convince my body top do before it had too. Now if I lay on my back I get dizzy and there is no way I would be able to sleep that way, i would roll over. I think your body tells you what it needs if you can listen.

The snoogle was key for making the transition.

I can't wait to sleep on my back again... Soon...

I'm struggling with this now that I'm coming up toward the end. I have a pregnancy pillow + a pillow propped behind my back to make sure I don't roll over + one cradling my tummy. My hips/shoulder hurt but you know it did last time too, I just learned to deal with it. I'm normally a stomach sleeper so it's hard to make sure I don't try to roll over onto my stomach. I will say this 2nd pregnancy has been easier to "train" myself to sleep on my side.

I'm 23 weeks and having the same problem! My hips and shoulders hurt from sleeping on my side. Lately I've been sleeping half on my side half on my belly with my leg propped up on a pillow. Lol it looks weird but definitely more comfy. Now if I could just stay asleep with out having to wake up every couple hours to pee....

@Coffee-lover: I would talk to your OB. Mine suggested the half back/half side sleeping with just a pillow under my hip on the one side. My OB also said that since everything looked healthy, my body would wake up if it was putting too much pressure on the baby from sleeping on my back.

So...i keep going to sleep on my side and waking up on my back. Sometimes my stomach!!! I'm 26 weeks. But we have memory foam so it cradles me more and comforms. My doctor always said that i will wake up if it's uncomfortable. A few times i have. More often than not, I just wake up when I need to.

My doctor told me that you don't have to be completely on your side. A 45-degree tilt is enough to keep blood flowing for you and the baby. So I just put a body pillow under half of my body, and then I move it to the other side when I get uncomfy. Hopefully side-sleeping will get more comfortable for you soon! Somehow!

I am a pure back sleeper and cannot sleep on my side. My doctor told me to take a small pillow and place it under my hip and that was enough of an elevation and all I needed. You don't HAVE to sleep on your side. I'm 33 weeks and have had zero issues with the small pillow behind my hip. I keep one on each side and if I wake up I rotate to the other hip just to keep things even. My dr also told me to not even worry about getting off my back until 24-26 weeks, so that helped me worry less at least! Hopefully you will find something that works for you!

I developed this way of sleeping where you put pillows to support your belly and leg and go very deeply to the side. And the top knee is bent and resting on the pillows. It kinda felt like stomach sleeping!

@Coffee-lover: I'm struggling with this, too. I have a Boppy body pillow which was great at first (helped me stay on my side when the reflux hit). Now if I wake up in the middle of the night my hips are very achy and I find it hard to get back to sleep. I'm going to try a thicker pillow between the knees. I also move a lot and sometimes wake up on my left side or my back.

I feel for you! Sleep becomes so challenging.

I bought a snoogle pillow and put my top leg right over so I'm basically almost on my tummy. I did this throughout my whole last pregnancy and I'm 18 weeks pregnant now and doing that to get some sleep.

Yeah, I wish i had some words of comfort but I was the same as you and didn't get more than 2 hours of consecutive sleep for about the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy. The upside was that the newborn days were easy-ish for me, because I was actually getting 3-4 hour stretches! Some things that kind of helped were a body pillow that I would run under my chest and between my legs (head was propped up on 2/3 pillows), and sleeping on my own - having my husband in bed with me just pissed me off!

I struggled with this during both of my pregnancies. I know some people are opposed to this sort of thing, but I started seeing a chiropractor weekly in my third trimester (he specialized in pregnant women and infants) and my hip pain was virtually gone from that point forward at night in bed.

Have you tried putting pillows behind your back and laying sort of at an angle? That way you'll be kind of half on your back and half in your side. It might help take pressure off your hips but not let your belly weigh down on your blood flow.

I do have a pregnancy pillow (though at 12 weeks I don't actually "need" it yet, I just like it, and I never had one last time), but I don't think it makes a huge difference with that. I'm just a heavy sleeper so I am able to sleep through it, and usually wake up achy. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm looking for some too!

I am wondering if anyone has any tips for side sleeping while pregnant. I am 22 weeks and before pregnancy have always slept on either my stomach or back. Sleeping on my side is so painful and uncomfortable and I feel like the lack of sleep is killing me!

I have multiple pillows, put one between my legs, and the rest under my belly or at my back and surrounding me. I can fall asleep but within 45 minutes I wake up and either my hip or my ribs of the side I am laying on is hurting so bad. At this point I roll over to the other side and start all over. 45 minutes later and I am awake and in pain again. Lately my ribs and hips are actually sore during the day too, it almost feels like they are bruised or something.

I do not have a specific pregnancy pillow, I am going to buy one tomorrow to see if that makes a difference. My mattress is pretty new and fairly soft. I already tried a foam mattress topper and that didn't help.

I have also tried sleeping with my upper half propped up, and sleeping on the couch. I am about to lose it! I am only getting 3-4 hours of sleep every night and am like a zombie during the day.

Is anyone else having these problems, or have any tips for me?
