@LindsayInNYC: Eggwhite, because it's more slippery. In general, more wet CM or sensations mean more fertile. You might feel wet or lubricative when very fertile, moist when approaching O, and dry when less/not fertile. However, some women don't ever notice EW and are still fertile- if your most wet day if creamy and then you dry up then that could be your peak day and indicate ovulation.

@LittleFox: Do you know if any particular type is more apt to "slip out"? I don't know if that's considered wet or EW.

@pui You're definitely not alone! I would echo exactly what @foodnerd81 said. For some reason it kinda grossed me out and I was never able to get a good sample when I did anyway. So I just went by my temping and we start to BD a few days before I usually ovulate!

Agreed with rattles. Check each time you usethe bathroom. You should also feel more wet sensations throughout the day when you're more fertile. Sometimes the CM slips out or you don't notice it, but you feel more wet/slippery.

I was the same - I could only tell my dry days from my wet days. Could never get enough to see the elusive EWCM! I started just tracking it as either creamy or wet. I thought for sure it would affect our chances but I got my BFP cycle 2.

I agree with @Rattles: bearing down helps. Morning time seems to be the best for me. I imagine it collecting throughout the night, but that's just my made-up theory.

Here's what I do--check with a handheld mirror. The magnified side! I keep one by the toilet. Really, I never thought I'd spend so much time looking at myself down there, but that's what works for me! The only time I touch (now that I know on sight which is creamy) is when I think it's egg white and I want to see if it stretches.

I could never really get the hang of it, nor did I try that hard-- I was a little grossed out by that part of it (which is dumb, but I'm being honest). I noted when it felt dry or not, but that was about it. I was tracking my temps though and they were usually pretty clear. This basically meant that I didn't necessarily know ahead of O exactly when I would, so we pretty much just BD from CD12 until I had confirmation of O (3 or more higher temps). It became even harder to check CM after BD, so I kind of gave up trying.
How's that for TMI?

Bear down and wipe before you actually go to the bathroom (whenever you sit down and then again after you go) and then check what you find on the toilet paper the way that NerdBee suggests.

You don't need a very big sample to tell the difference between the different CMs. I usually tell by feel and a small sample is enough.

When you have a sample on your finger, try stretching it between your finger and thumb. Creamy usually will form soft peaks when you separate your fingers. Watery forms nothing when you separate fingers. Egg white will actually stretch between your fingers.

I always went by what was on my underwear. Do you get up to use the bathroom at night? If so, make sure you check then too.

all i can say is i have trouble with it too...i generally go by what i see on my underwear or my best guess as to what it "feels" like. but for some reason when it's EW, i have more of it, so it's a little easier to tell. it's possible i just don't have too much b/c i'm only off bcp for a few months...i'm still learning, and i hope you get some good tips!

So I've been charting for a few months now to get the swing of things before we start TTC in 2 months (Yay so excited)!

I have no issues tracking my Basal body temperature, and I have been able to see the rise in temperature after ovulation. However, I have some difficultly with identifying CM.

(Sorry, this next part is TMI) My problem seems mostly that I can't seem to get a good sample. Nothing seems to often come out into my underwear, so I usually need to reach a finger inside to try and get a sample. There are times when I definitely feel dry inside and times when I definitely feel very wet and slippery. I can't seem to collect a good sample to actually look at though, so I have trouble telling whether or not it's "creamy", "watery" or "egg white".

Any suggestions?
