@macintosh: oh congrats!!! Baby sleep is seriously THE most frustrating thing about this entire experience. That is a win in my book mama!!
I find my 9 month old still wakes 1-2 hours after putting her down. But she always goes back to sleep without me going in

You guys I have the best update! Starting last Tuesday I made a decision to work on DS sleeping in his crib to cut back on night wakings. We have had a few hiccups but for the most part it's going great!

It's only been a few days but last night we had only 2 wakings! The first one was at 8:45, just over an hour after he went to bed, and he went back down easily. He slept until 1:00 am, then I fed him his bottle and he want back to sleep til almost 7:30! He got nearly 12 hours! He's on a solid 2 nap schedule now at 9am and 1:00 pm, with a nice long 2 hour afternoon nap. I'm so proud of him and I already feel more rested

@Kemma: Yep, mine too. She was 25 months before she stopped taking her night feed. I tried watering the milk down and replacing it with water, but she would just wake more frequently then.

@macintosh: You have my sympathy. I hope you find a resolution where I couldn't.

@macintosh: Just a thought but he possibly likes spending that one on one time with you through the night and although the interrupted sleep sucks it might just be his way of staying close? And FWIW, my big girl had a decent feed at night until she was eighteen months old so it's not abnormal!

@Madison43: he drinks about 24 during the day with about 8 more at night. I wish he would drink more during the day, i used to to 7 oz bottles but he hardly ever finished them and he was wasting a lot. Now he drinks the 6 oz bottles til til they are almost empty, sometimes that even requires a lot of breaks.

@winniebee: sigh, I wish he'd eat more during the day. I'll try to fill him up with a full bottle at his first wake up.

Tonight was destined to be a weird night. He went down as usual, falling asleep after his bottle, but he woke up 15 mins after I put him in the crib. Wouldn't go back to sleep and now he's just sitting in the crib, wubbanub hanging out of his mouth, moving around in the dark,

I would try putting him back in the crib and do Ferber style checks allowing him to fuss or cry for a few minutes and hopefully he will get the message that your house isn't an all night diner ;)

I also would increase the ounces of formula in his bottles if he is eating all of his bottles. He could need 32 oz total in 24 oz.

I disagree that he's that hungry at night. Many babies wake to eat until 9 months out of hunger, but it's typically once and after 9m, i think it's habit. I'm a sucker and my second baby nursed at night until 12 months, sometimes a few times a night. ;)

@macintosh: I'd agree that if he's drinking that much at night, he's probably hungry. Can you increase his formula intake during the day? Is he drinking 24-26 oz total or 24-26 oz during the day and an additional 8-10 at night?

If he's eating at night then he needs it and is hungry. It would be different if he just took a few sips and passed back out, but if he's eating he needs it. I'd probably try giving him a bottle at the first wake up and putting him back in his crib, but DD could never sleep well with is after 6-7 months.

@FaithFertility: I wish I had the backbone for it too! Especially now that he's older and I can tell when he's being dramatic, lol. I just may try that tonight at his first wake-up. It sucks cause it's right when I'm trying to go to bed myself and he's really conditioned to get in bed with us :bummed:

@macintosh: I am not a CIO person (although sometimes wish I had more of a backbone for it)

I would definitely try putting him back in crib after 1st waking, DD actually sleeps WAY better in her own room

Maybe start with giving him the bottle but putting him back in crib, then no bottle after that?!

@Ms.Badger: that sounds tough, but an awesome result! I wonder if being so close just makes him wake up even more often. I need to make a decision and stick to it, I guess. I love the snuggles, but if I'm actually asleep maybe I won't miss them so much.

My LO is almost the exact same age and I was doing the same, allowing him to co-sleep following first wake-up and it got BAD, like wouldn't sleep for more than 1 hour in crib and then wanted to nurse all night. So, we pushed him to sleep in his crib after first wake-up. We would let him cry 10 minutes and then comfort him, first DH would pat/soothe while he stayed in the crib, then pick him up, then I would rock him, and only then, I would feed him. After 1 week of this, he was pretty much STTN (not exactly, wakes to eat around 6 and then sleeps 2 more hours). He still has hiccups where he cries for 10 minutes (or slightly more) before going back to sleep or needs some snuggles) but it's SOOO much better. He didn't really NEED to eat and dropped those feeds fine as soon as he could fall back to sleep by himself, except that 5-6 am feed - he seems to NEED that one to go back to sleep.
Good luck :goodluck:

I should also say that I'm not opposed to him staying in the crib with a little fussing, but I've been afraid to try putting him back down in his crib at night. I tried it once night last week for an early 9 pm wake up and he fought me for an HOUR. I'm willing to try but maybe this isn't the best week - lots of work commitments and I need to sleep. Or maybe I should just rip off the band-aid.

@ShootingStar: he's taking about 24-26 oz daily and 3 meals with solids per day. He's 23 lbs though, so I wouldn't be too surprised if he needed a little extra formula. He has been drinking 8-12 oz at night though!

ETA: this has been going on for over a month so I'm not thinking its a growth spurt.

Do you know how many ounces he's getting during the day? I think babies need something like 24 oz at least to not be hungry at night. DS didn't stop waking up to eat until he was eating a ton during the day, including solids. Part of it could be habit too. I'd try to ramp up food during the day as much as possible. And while we were trying to night wean is let him cry for 10 mins. Usually he'd stop around the 7 min mark. But we were not bed sharing at that point.

DS is 8 months. He is doing well napping in his crib, even while working through the 3 to 2 nap transition. His problem is night wakings.

He goes down in his crib between 7:30-8:30 after bedtime routine and a bottle. He doesn't do drowsy but awake well, but I have seen him grab his paci or change positions then go back to sleep on the monitor so I know he can self soothe a little. I'm not comfortable with CIO, and I need to sleep, so we bed share after his first wake up.

His first wake up is between 10:30-11:30. He normally goes back down in our bed with minimal nursing (he's basically day weaned) or his paci. He then wakes multiple times per night, sometimes needing a bottle to go back to sleep, sometimes not. He's been taking 2 bottles of formula at night because my supply is not enough to fill him up.

I tried to slowly cut down on the amount of formula in the bottles, hoping he would make up for it during the day. He eats his solids pretty well (BLW). It could be a coincidence but I swear he's waking up more since I cut down on the formula in his bottles at night. Could an 8 month old really need 8+ ounces overnight, or is this just a bad habit? TIA!
