@Tundra Daisy: He's sleeping after no bouncing and 27 total minutes of crying over 1 hour. I think my plan is to try happy method for nap training, since it is more interactive, and three minutes interval checks (maybe trying 5 minute intervals) for nights. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether we are going to nap and sleep train all in one swoop, or try to get a handle on nights first and then work on naps.

@Little Misters Mom: K was addicted to bouncing! I think we bounced her to sleep until 3-4 months. It eventually stopped working, and we nursed to sleep instead. When we sleep trained at 6 months, we started putting her down awake, so she did eventually get over the bouncing addiction!

Just as an update or for anyone finding this thread after a desperate forum search in the future we're trying Sandy's CIO method as we speak. Did 4 checks at 3 minute intervals (so 12 minutes of crying) then about 15 minutes of silence, then another 6 minutes of crying (with 1 check in the middle) and we just hit the 15 minute mark of silence. Just checked and he is still up but laying there quietly. Fingers crossed he just dozes off soon. Not the easiest night but so far no bouncing!

@MamaChin: Yep it actually works!!! completely bizarre I know , and this was a baby who couldn't live without the ball! We used to actually take the ball to my mums house when we'd go for a meal   The concept of him being in his bed and not screaming seemed ludicrous to us!!

He's not in his own room yet but in a amby hammock in our room, I've got such confidence in this method though I'm not worried about moving him when the time comes like I was before! I would totally give it a go with your daughter in her own room

We tried something similar to Sandy's method and it didn't work for us, it did for the first few days but then he just started to constantly cry with no fussing :bummed: I guess different things work for different babies.

Anything is worth a shot though to get rid of the ball - it's a killer!!

@Little Misters Mom: Yay so happy you are going to try it! I did like the article said and went bursting in there as soon as his crying would just start to wane a little bit or when he'd take a breath, so in the first minute really!

Then my partner and I take turns and we pretty much go in and out in a constant stream because we just go as soon as he stops for even a second just to take a breath! I really try and get his attention when I first put him down too and make sure he looks at me while I smile and say 'good boy you're going to have a great sleep' blah blah!

I know the whole method sounds totally crazy but we were completely blown away by how effective it is! and also how nice it is to say all these positive things to him and have him actually go to sleep himself?! He takes an average of about 5 mins to go to sleep now, while we come in and out saying 'wow what a lovely boy', 'look how amazing you are' etc... so it's a pretty nice experience for all.

He was waking up every 3 hours during the night and every 20 minutes at nap time after us spending sometimes an hour or two on the ball getting him to sleep :bummed: and now he sleeps 5 hour stretches at night and minimum 45 minute naps! it's changed our lives!

Let me know how it goes! can't wait to hear

My son was addicted to the exercise ball for falling asleep as well. Then I also got him used to nursing to sleep so it was bad but it worked so we kept on doing it every night. One night around 6.5 months, he woke up in the middle of the night and nothing seemed to work. He just kept on crying - so we end up letting him CIO. We continued it for naps the next day and by the next night, he started falling asleep on his own for both naps and bedtime.

Well, we still struggle big time with sleep, but we were you guys with the bouncing. We bounced for hours and hours until she would fall asleep, working up a sweat, back breaking, etc. you know! But, like you, I simply couldn't take it anymore. I refused to bounce one more day on that ball. So....what I started doing is swaddling her, and then we walk around the room (sometimes at a pretty rapid pace) meanwhile, patting her bum (kind of vigorously) and shushing. She didn't fall for my tricks at first, and there were many tears, but I couldn't take the bouncing anymore. She's now 17 weeks old and the yoga ball has been retired. Now, it doesn't work every time! Especially lately (4 month sleep regression anyone....), and I still have to put her in the swing for some naps. But, its better than the bouncing. I think that drowsy but awake thing is a joke at this point. We put her drowsy but awake, she wakes 45 minutes later. We put her after nursing to sleep, still wakes 45 minutes later. So, while this isn't especially helpful to you, just wanted to know we have been there and it did SUCK, but it was just a couple of bad days of the no bouncing. Anyways, we were starting to get some good sleep habits into place and now that the 4 month sleep regression has arrived in our house, those have all gone out the window.

@Corduroy: that's a good tip on the arm drop. We still swaddle him, but the other night he got very close to rolling in his woombie so it's time to swaddle wean as well. There is nothing worse than wasting an hour of bouncing by putting him down too soon

.@Foodnerd81: I think we're probably headed to CIO. But he's only 11 weeks so I feel like it's too soon and I honestly don't know how we can keep this up until we hit 16 weeks or so. On the plus side, despite not being back to my pre-pregnancy weight, my midsection actually looks pretty decent from he mandatory core training.

@Tundra Daisy: I'm going to try it! I have to admit I'm wary, because we tried so so many things that people swore by and nothing has worked (every kind of swaddle, Merlin suit, Weissbluth timing, Babywise big feed before bed etc). Right now DH is bouncing him for his nap, but I think we will try at bedtime, my only concern is that when we tried the Merlin suit i really tried to give him time to adjust and his screaming escalated over 30 minutes. If he doesn't calm down, do you ever go in? If not, isn't this just CIO (which I'm not necessarily against just want to make sure I understand and am doing it right)? Looking forward to reading about your experience if you get a chance to write about it.

This was us until one week ago!!! our baby is 13 weeks now and we were spending SO much time on the ball too!!! until I found this method - it's a complete miracle and worked the very first time we tried it!! it's nothing to do with the baby whisperer so I'm not sure why they call it that lol!

http://theycallmemummy.com/2012/09/10/sleep-training/

So happy to be able the share this because it's worked so well for us!! hope it works for you too.. it's such a positive way to put him to sleep and to see him laying in his bed without crying is truly amazing

I was actually going to post about it - will do tomorrow! let me know how you find it or if you have any questions about how we did it :silly:

I was you. I never timed it but I wouldn't be surprised if we hit over ten hours a day a few times a week- though at leat c would also nurse to sleep. Lucky for me she was a little smaller than your LO.

Eventually we hit a breaking point and just could not handle it any more. We did CIO around four months to fall asleep at bedtime and never looked back. It's brutal, all that bouncing!

I thought we did a lot of bouncing in the early days but no where close to 15 hours. We switched to wearing LO and walking to get her to sleep at some point. We ended up in a routine where we walked two hours every night to get LO to sleep. Like you said, one bad habit for another but much less physically demanding. Then we sleep trained at 4 month to break the motion habit.

Don't stress about drowsy but awake. That's a nice to have sleep skill but you're still in survival mode.

ETA: Just remembered, at that age we used the "arm drop test" when she wasn't swaddled. You test to see if they are really asleep by lifting baby's arm and watching for it to drop straight down with no resistance. You don't put LO down until the arm drops. Total opposite of drowsy but awake but it helped minimize failed attempts at putting LO down.

@Mrs. Champagne: sorry, I wasn't clear. That is what we do. We bounce him in our arms then oh so gingerly transfer him sleeping. Sometimes it only a few minutes, sometimes it is over 4 hours. But I want to get to a place where we can get him into the crib without bouncing.

A swing? I can't beleive you did 15 hours on the ball. Go you!

Eta: or what if you slowed down the bouncing? Holdings him a lying down position. So that eventually you barely bounce. Then eventually just sit there. And eventually can put him down in his crib alone? Gah. Good luck.

So this is entirely a problem of my own making, but since ds came home we've used an exercise ball to bounce him to sleep and calm him when he is upset. I think on our hardest day I clocked 15 hours on the ball. He is now 11 weeks old and nothing -NOTHING- else works to put him to sleep. We've made a little progress finding alternatives to calm him when he is fussy, though we still turn to the ball, but he won't rock to sleep, walk to sleep or even nurse to sleep. I don't want to just replace one bad habit with another, but he is 16 pounds and my back just can't take it. So I'd even be happy to sub in something less physically demanding. Though laying him down awake but drowsy remains the impossible dream.

Anyone else have a bounce-aholic? What did you do?
