@hellobeeboston: yeah I just looked closer at the one we have and there is a 3 inch high boxspring. If we just put a flat board under a new mattress (because there are only a few slats) I think it will be low enough. She CAN climb in now but I’d prefer lower. I didn’t realize it was a removable box spring- I thought it was part of the bed itself.

@Foodnerd81: we have a trundle bed in my son's room and there is no box spring, and it's pretty low... it was given by a friend so i'm not sure of the name of it - but without the box spring its easy to get in.

@Foodnerd81: The regular mattress is fine. It should last until the kids leave the house.

@Foodnerd81: just for laughs here’s a pic when we tried a box spring + mattress from costco. That’s when I realized we couldn’t do a box spring :silly:

@Foodnerd81: the bed with no box spring is more comfortable then the other - that is a newer thicker mattress (just from Costco) but I think that accounts for the difference in comfort. We have a foam mattress from amazon in the trundle and my husband sleeps on it frequently with no complaints

@Mrs. Toad: you mean the underneath mattress part is uncomfortable right? Yeah I’m assuming if only put little kids on it- like instead of sleeping on the floor for a sleepover like I did. Or if we had two couples staying with us one could sleep in the queen size guest bed and the other could sleep in DD1’s full size bed in her room, dd1 could sleep on the trundle bed in dd2’s room. Is the regular mattress (like on top) comfortable?

@gotkimchi: ok thanks. And the regular top mattress part is comfortable enough for say, a small young adult?

@Foodnerd81: one has a very short box spring like 2 or 3 inches because it only has 3 slats. The other doesn’t because it has many slats

Ours is short, but we can only have a 5" mattress on the trundle. I could handle it for a night or two, but DH who weighs over 200 can feel the slats. I wouldn't put grandparents on it either. I figured it would be helpful for our kids, cousins or friends.

Thinking about future furniture for my 3 yo, who is still in the crib for now.

She currently has a twin bed in her room that came with our house when we bought it. I like the head and footboard enough, but it’s kind of tall and has big drawers underneath that are kind of jacked up (previous owners had warned us about that). For now it’s a place to sit and read books before we put her in the crib, it’s creaky, and has an old mattress. I was thinking maybe we can get rid of the jacked up drawers and put a trundle bed underneath for future sleepovers, but the bed is higher than I’d like for a very short 3 year old (literally 2% for height). Are they always tall or just this one?
