When I had this happen the only thing that would clear the duct was dangle feeding. Ridiculous but really it was the only thing that worked quick.

I have 3 kids and I have fed them all different ways. It's really really tough! I have also been given the advice "don't quit on your worst day" and I tried to say that mantra during all of the tough days! With my last baby I only nursed for about 1week and then tried pumping for another 2 before I switched to 100% formula feeding. I don't want to turn this into a breast vs. formula feeding post because I support all moms feeding their babies in whatever way they feel
works for them and I truly believe fed is best. Just remember you are a great mama and doing the absolute best for your baby! Hang in there!

Hugs! It's so easy to get discouraged, especially when the issues pile up like that! A is 9 months and I definitely went through a patch around 7-8 months where I wanted to throw in the towel. I had that nipple pain, like you, but that was the only issue... it just gets tiresome having to pump and handle night wake-ups, and blah blah blah. I've come back around to being good with it now, but it's hard, it's a lot of extra effort. Ultimately I would never quit this early if I could help it. I love the bonding time, I love the ease when I'm with my baby, and it's totally worth it. I also think it's totally ok to not absolutely love it all the time though.

Breastfeeding and pumping for both my kids for a year was the hardest thing I've ever done! It is HARD! You are a rock star for doing it this longer already!!! <3 <3 <3

@daniellemybelle: @DesertDreams88: @Dahlia: thank you girls for your responses. I think Dd unclogged it after I took a hot shower and placed hot towels on it while dangle feeding. Now I'm hoping for no other boob issues, or at least give me a while. So tired of boob issues.

I agree with all the other previous posters! One other idea, kind of TMI.... whenever I have a clog, after working on it for a bit, I look at my nipple very closely. I always notice what looks like a small whitehead, usually towards the side/direction of the clog. I pick at it and rub it with a wet, hot towel. Soon enough it flakes off, and bam, all the milk comes streaming out. It's a literal clog. It's happened to me 5 out of 5 times in the past 10 months. Hopefully this helps!

Like PP said, never quit on a bad day! Whenever I was having a bad day, I told myself to try for one more day and it usually got better.

That being said, I BF for 16 months and while I don't regret it, I almost wish I had stopped earlier. Life is so much easier now, and DD is much nicer to me (before she'd fuss with me a lot and be happy with everyone else).

All that to say, no matter what you do it will be okay! I hope you find the strength to keep going, or peace if you decide to stop. You say "only" 7.5 months, but that's an amazing gift you've already given your child. You're doing a great job!

@iluvboba637: same thing with teething here. DS is almost 13 months and has 8 teeth. Every time a new one comes in, it changes his latch and it takes a few days to get back to pain free nursing. I did get a rx for newmans all purpose nipple ointment and that seems to help, though it shouldn't be used constantly. I feel you on the pumping too. I'm finally pump weaning, but with my history of clogged ducts, I'm doing it slowly and it's taking foreverrrrr. I just try to remember that it won't always be like this

@iluvboba637: oh yeah I forgot to respond to the teething- it is the worst! Just awful. My second has been a little better than her big sister was with that but she actually drew a tiny bit of blood the other day. But it will pass. It will.

Thank you girls.
@Foodnerd81: congrats on making it to a year.
@peaches1038: will look into sunflower lecithin

Must keep treading along. Making small goals, like Only 16 more days of pumping at work until xmas break and then we'll reevaluate. I actually enjoy BF this time because I ep with DS but man this teething thing causing the nipple pain and clogged ducts is sooo sooo painful.

It's so so tough and it sounds like you are doing an awesome job! I had recurrent clogged ducts and now take sunflower lecithin and I haven't had one since I started taking it! Clogged ducts are the worstttt.

I'm not going to give tough love, just a hug. It's hard. I've felt overwhelmed and sick of breastfeeding a lot more with my second- with my first I loved it. But my baby will be one in a couple weeks and still nursing so I guess I'm not quitting before a year.

You have to do what works best for you. Good luck with the clog. Those are so painful. It sucks.

Just venting and need ya'll to give me some tough love and smack some sense into me to not give up quite yet. Dd is only 7.5 months.

Girls I'm nearly in tears and about ready to throw in the towel. I posted a few days ago that I was afraid I was getting thrush but it ended up resolving itself and was most likely just a bad latch from dd teething. Well today I have a major clogged duct that has caused a huge wedge shape lump in half my boob. I had this before a few weeks ago too and luckily with all your help it didn't turn into mastitis but omg I'm just so overwhelmed with everything and the thought of having to take all those multiple measures again to unclog it. I've already done the hot towels and nursing dd a few times and though the lump is smaller it's still there. Cries.

I'm tired of having to massage/compress/abuse it when I pump, shower. I'm tired of feeling pain when I pick up Dd or hug DS. I'm tired of not being able to eat lunch without bottles hanging from my boobs.

But I EPed with DS for 13 months so sure enough it didn't kill me.

But man this is tough, very very tough.

Thanks for letting me vent.
