So i know this sounds silly..... but I watched Beverly hills nanny's and during their interview process she had the nanny play with her lo while she was off doing some work. She could still see them and keep and eye on them, but she wasn't right there with them which I think takes the pressure off a bit.

That's great that your daughter likes any of them! I don't have a nanny, but we did hire a one day a week babysitter a couple months ago. I found 2 sitters on care.com that looked good and interviewed them both, then decided we would have the one we liked better come for a trial day (we paid her) and if we liked her we'd hire her, if we didn't, we'd do a trial with the other one. We ended up liking the first one, so the first two times she came I was home and just kind of stayed within earshot while she played with him. The third day I left her alone with him for a couple hours and now I use that day for running errands, dr apps, etc. She still has trouble getting him down for naps (not her fault, he wants me), but other than that she is great.

I just wanted someone with lots of infant experience who I could get along with since I'd be home sometimes while she was here. Also, I was looking for someone long term and since she is in college and only takes 2 classes a semester, I know she'll be taking awhile to get her degree.

I would suggest just doing trial days with a couple of the nannies you like (I used to be a nanny too) and hang around, but not in the room with them because it will make the nanny uncomfortable and you won't really get a good idea of how they interact. And I'd say leave her alone whenever you feel comfortable! Good luck!

Speaking as a former nanny - maybe it would help if you asked each of them to "sketch out" what their week with your little one would be? While I doubt anyone would actually write "turn on the TV so I can play on my cell phone" you might get a good gist of creativity and how often they like to leave the house with what they do say.

Also, I think it's way awkward when parents stay and doesn't give you insight into their actual interactions because the kid usually isn't sure who to turn to for what, know what I mean? Maybe you could have a Skype connection or something so you could peek in on them without "being there"?

That is a good problem to have though! Good luck!

For mom's who have some in-home child care, can you share a little about your interview process and experience? I read Mrs. Bee's guide and have met with a few people, but they all seem great and have good references. Zoey's easy so will go to them all and play. I can't decide and I don't feel like I'm looking for anything more specific than love my kid, take her around the neighborhood and get her to nap.

When you did your trial day--did you hang out with them all day to see how they would interact? How long did you stay with the nanny before you left them alone together? What were your absolute musts? Any advise is much appreciated!
