@blackbird: thanks! frustrating cause I am now at wedding weight but my honeymoon bikinis still give me a slight muffin top. Damn PP hips. Good thing she is so damn cute and worth it. I have 6 more till my goal and then I will probably try for another 5. So I have a little cushion :)

I do physique57 videos to mainly tone my core. It is a good workout toning wise and I have fairly muscular legs and they still make my legs shake. I will say tho that they are not adequate for cardio, so I run on mountain biking trails 4-5x a week and go power walking the other days. Running is def not easy on my knees tho so I don't recommend that for you. With all that said, the only way to really see results in your body from toning is to watch your diet. Like a pp said, you can have toned muscles, but they could be covered up by fat. And yes, 12 weeks is plenty of time

@blackbird: I am down 27.2lbs now. I have lost some in my hips and thighs but it seems to be the last place I lose it from.

My body does better with cardio and strength training. I don't have a gym membership anymore since DH travels it isn't worth it. but I have to start doing DVDs or something. I need to tone tone tone.

I do Bar Method dvds at home. Seriously it is the only exercise I have ever stuck with for longer than a few months (been doing it for 5 years now) and it changed my body shape. I was a gymnast (very muscular, large legs especially) and now I am much more lean all over. I like Bar Method specifically but there are tons of similar ones to choose from (Barre3, Physique57, Ballet Body come to mind).

Edited to add: I also tweaked my diet at the same time as starting bar workouts and that helped a ton in losing weight and inches. I really cut down on processed/sugary foods and upped my fruit/veggie intake and had great results.

Barre is so expensive lol the closest studio to me is Pure Barre and it's still about 25 mins away which isn't worth the drive or the price when there are several workout studios in town. I do think it's effective!

Right now I'm doing Stroller Strides which is a Fit4Mom program which I love because I can bring DD with me and still get a *real* workout, T25 on rainy days, running when it's bearable, and yoga. Stroller Strides is usually expensive but since it's new here, it's extremely affordable. My regular gym does Les Mills classes but after 2+ years, I was getting burned out. I'll see how this new schedule goes!

You'll lose weight in your hips and thighs (and all over) if you tighten down your diet. Barre will strengthen muscle-the "tone" appears when fat disappears and the underlying muscle shows through. But the barre classes I took were never a big calorie burner. Not for an hour of work. It didn't do a ton for me except strengthen my abs, but I was in shape from crossfit/weights/HIIT. But if your nutrition is on point, you will definitely see results :)

I have been doing barre for four years. My first month I lost inches everywhere! Legs, hips, abs, arms. Usually studios have a beginner special- I would do it for a month then try the DVDs. Pure barre advertised as seeing results in ten classes, I know I definitely did.

@Mamaof2: yep, box jumps are a thing. Personally I'm really bad at jumping and I can only do the lower boxes right now. I also step up on higher boxes.

Running shoes may not be the best choice for HIIT classes. You may want to look into some cross trainers.

Can you skip the extra cardio boosts? For instance, instead of jumping, reach up on your toes instead?

I absolutely love Zumba, but I have knee problems as well it started bothering me recently so I had to stop. Boo!

I have the Wii and XBox at home. I really enjoyed EA Active: More Workouts. It's fairly low impact, can be done at home, and the game holds you accountable. I'm not as familiar with the XBox, but I have a few games that are really interactive so I sweat like crazy.

You should definitely get your knee checked out. I've had continuous knee problems, and an MRI showed a wearing down of cartilage in my right knee. pt and strengthening of the surrounding muscles can help.

Agree that shoes can also have an effect. For classes like that, you should probably be wearing cross training shoes, not running shoes. I like minimalist shoes but they are not for everyone.

That said, my exercise of choice is Crossfit. I love it.

You can get toned with Barre. I also found that a studio class was a much better workout for me than the video. I lost inches all over. As for the jumping, you should never have to if it's hurting you, so I hope they are not pushing you to jump. What kind of shoes are you wearing? My knees start to bother me when it's time to get a new pair of running shoes.

In an effort to get in shape I joined a gym in December and usually go 3 times per week.

Its consider HIIT - its a 60 min group class with a mix of rowing, treadmill, and free weights.

A few months ago my knee started bothering me - it got better but now I have to modify a lot of the exercises and cant jump at all (and here they like jumping for that added cardio boost).

They just opened a Barre studio by my house and I was thinking of checking it out - I thought my gym was pricey and this is another $60 month on top of what I pay now - yikes!

I tried Barre DVDs and it was ok but wondering if a in studio class is better.

Can I get toned with Barre? Can you lose weight in hips/thighs?

What's your choice for exercise?
