@winniebee: I missed this when you first posted but I would have said to just keep offering and he just needs to get used to it. :-) Glad he's grown to like it, one less stress in a moms life, we have enough of those ;-)

I finished weaning at 11.5 months and he hardly drank any milk. I agree with others that as long as he is getting lots of other dairy it shouldn't be a problem. One thing I did do that worked was blend wcm with blueberries and he drank that when he wouldn't drink it plain.

@winniebee: I mixed wcm for my daughter starting around 11 months. I started with 75%bm for a few days then went to 50% for a few days 25% for a few days and then all wcm. It took about 2 weeks but worked like a charm! We did it in bottles til she liked the taste them switched to straws

@winniebee: if you cut out some sessions he might just make up for the missing calories by nursing longer at the remaining sessions and also taking in more solids. C also didn't take to WCM right away but loved water out of her straw cup. So I started mixing a tiny amount of WCM with water and offering that at meals. We started at 12 months and she had been EBF up to that point. Every week I'd add a little more milk. After a month or so she was at half WCM and half water. And then I just gave a straw cup of milk at meals and she's loved milk ever since. I just stopped offering nursing sessions one at time and by 14.5 months she was done. She never asked and was totally fine eating her meals and snacks of solids and having her straw cup of milk at meal times.

When My son weaned he refused all milk for quite awhile. Just drank water. Out Doctor wasn't concerned because he was eating other dairy. Probably not something to be too worried about.

@winniebee: i agree with others that you don't necessarily have to replace the BM with WCM. when i was away from E for a weekend last month and she was bottle/cup striking, i worried she'd be up a lot MOTN for grandma to replace the calories. she only took about 10oz of BM during the day (from a cup usually) but still slept through. Grandma said she just made sure to let her eat as much as she wanted/more than usual maybe at meals/snacks.

i tend to worry more about overall calorie difference if suddenly getting less milk than about calcium or any specific nutrient. we eat a lot of dairy and she eats a pretty good variety of other foods.

I agree with others. My LO doesn't drink milk at all, dairy or otherwise. When my youngest wean I don't even plan on trying with her. It's totally possible to have a healthy diet/growth without it! My ped has no issue with it at all.

ETA: we were down to 2 sessions at 12 months. Looking back sometimes I feel bad but she are tons of food ans she's totally fine now!

@winniebee: yes, follow his lead. Lo wouldn't take wcm when we introduced it at 10 months (she also wouldn't take formula) and our doc just told us to get her as much dairy as possible. Lots of cheese and yogurt, and we made lots of milk smoothies as well. But we just didn't let us worry about it. She was tiny, so it was stressful, but we couldn't force her to take it before she was ready. And I couldn't quit my job to nurse her all day (she stopped taking the pumped milk as well). She started drinking a lot of milk a few months later, and drinks a few ounces a day at almost 2 years.

Intersting, thanks! He eats yogurt or cheese every day so I know he's getting calcium....I guess just follow his lead on whether he wants milk. I just didn't know if it was cruel to try and take away 2 nursing sessions if he's not drinking WCM. Kinda not worth starting formula at this point.

We transitioned first to goat's milk while slowly weaning (starting at 11 months) and then eventually to WCM. I know goat's milk can be tolerated a little bit easier if there is any kind of sensitivity and then only thing it lacks is Vitamin D, so we didn't use it for more than a couple of months before making the switch to WCM.

I don't think it's a big deal if he doesn't drink any milk. But then my DS eats yogurt and cheese pretty much every day, so I know he's getting calcium. We started by replacing one bottle at a time with a sippy of milk.

@winniebee: when we transitioned off BM at 13 months, we started with 75% BM, then stepped down to 50/50 then 25% BM. Always cold in a sippy but that was how she was taking her pumped milk at school. No problems with the transition.

My kids both spit out wcm for a while. Strangely they were fine with it in a bottle, but when I tried to switch to a cup they wouldn't tolerate it. The only thing that worked was telling them that it wasn't time to nurse, but they could have milk in a cup. I had always nursed on demand so that was hard, but they finally decided milk in a cup wasn't the most terrible thing ever. My kids were older than your LO though - we transitioned to cups between 14 and 16 months (it took so long because I kept getting discouraged because there was spit out milk on every surface of my home).

R is 11 months and nursing 4 times a day (wake up, a.m. nap, p.m. nap, bed). He eats tons of solids and drinks water. I'm trying to introduce WCM so that we can get down to just morning and bed nursing by 12 months. Also, we recently cut the late afternoon feeding and don't want him to be hungry/wanting milk and me not offering it. But he just spits out the WCM. Any suggestions? Warm it? I'm offering it in a straw cup which is how he drinks water.

Thanks!
