My OB practice said it didn't matter which side you lay on. For a huge chunk of pregnancy I found myself waking up on my back because that was most comfortable until DS got too big.

I slept on my right side most of the time because that was most comfortable. I had sciatic problems with both LOs mainly on the right side and it felt better to lay on that said; not sure why but the counter pressure helped.

I sleep so much better on my right side - I always have. I don't worry about it and am grateful for the sleep!

DS HATED me sleeping on my right hand side, and proved it as such during labor. He'd have decels if I laid on that side. I slept on my back mostly during my pregnancy and didn't have problems. I was a belly sleeper pre-pregnancy.

With my first I would sleep on my left side about 75% of the time. With my second I didn't care so much and baby preferred to be on the right.

I bought a 4 inch memory foam mattress topper and that has helped immeasurably because I stay asleep for longer periods of time and my shoulders don't get sore so much, forcing me to flip. I generally start on my left side and flip to my right side after my first bathroom break then flip to my left side after my second bathroom break… so I'd say I spend about 2/3 of my time on my left side.

I tried sleeping on my left side but it was so uncomfortable. I ended up sleeping mainly on my right and back. My ob said getting sleep is the most important thing and that I would wake up if there was a problem. LO is fine :)

@indi: I've woken up on my back before because I realized I was too comfortable, so I figured something must be wrong, lol

i made a conscious effort to sleep on my left side but my right side feels better to be honest, lol. however i do switch between both sides. i still wake up on my back often.

i've researched this a bit and they recommend the left side due to better blood flow to the heart, but at the end of the day it's best to do what is most comfortable that allows you to breathe the best - sometimes that wasn't always the left side for me. i wouldn't lose any sleep over it!

I find it's too hard to roll over without waking up at this point, so the side I go down on is usually the side I stay on. A pillow behind my back to help stop me from rolling in my sleep helped a lot when I was in the 1st and 2nd trimesters, though.

I wouldn't feel to bad about it. I have some terrible pain in my groin on the right side from tweaking my round ligament, and my OB said it's best to sleep on that side to relieve the pull and not to worry about the left is best rec. Comfortable, restful sleep is more important.

ETA- I've also been told that your body will wake you up if you're on your back too long before any real issues would come up. So don't feel awful if you wake up at 3am on your back. :-)

I sleep on my back a lot (I use two pillows to elevate me), because that's most comfortable. I do toss and turn between both my left and right side though.

While pregnant, what percentage of the night do you/did you sleep on your right side? I'm 29 weeks and have been trying to stay on my left most of the night as recommended, but since 19 weeks bad sciatic nerve pain has me tossing and turning for relief and the right side feels SO much better. It's not the end of the world to sleep on that side for a little bit, but I'm curious how you've dealt with the soreness of mostly laying on one side? Although, I'll most likely just keep sucking it up - at this stage sleep will only get worse I'm sure :)

P.S. I have a Snoogle and I'm one of the few who despise it! It helps me zero at this point and only makes tossing and turning more difficult.
