I was on a class C and took it until I got my BFP and maybe a few days afterwards (it was Restasis for my eyes). It stinks that I can't use it but my doc recommended at least waiting until 1st tri was over. I don't think I will go back to it until after I give birth, but I think it is fine while TTC.

Personally I've been taking a category D drug before and during pregnancy and have been monitored very closely for it. But that's for epilepsy and a rare form of migraine, so taking the risk is worth it because a seizure could put my baby in danger. While you're TTC it's probably not the biggest deal but at some point you'll want to think about whether you feel the benefit you get from the drug is worth the potential risk. If you think you need to, maybe you could get a second opinion from another doctor, possibly one who will be more understanding of your plans to become pregnant.

@ineebee: I used a category C drug prior to getting pregnant while I was TTC. My doctor advised me to just stop when I got my BFP (which is exactly what I did). My feelings were that I didn't ultimately know how long I would be TTC and that I didn't want to put any medical treatment I might need on hold because of TTC. I'd just do what you are comfortable with, though!

@T.H.O.U.: @septca: Thanks, that's helpful! I'm leaning towards just using the topical stuff as spot-treatment for the cyst.

I wouldn't worry about taking those - you don't share a bloodstream with your baby until 6+ weeks, so you would have plenty of time to stop taking them if you got KU.

As for the doctor's plan, it's really up to you what you feel comfortable with. Cystic acne is often bacterial, so antibiotics are pretty common. My husband, who has the same problem, has had really good luck with coconut oil (which is anti-fungal) as a moisturizer. Totally counterinuitive, but it works for him.

A lot of people are on category C drugs during pregnancy let alone during TTC.

Personally, I think you need to decide if you NEED these drugs or if there are other options. If I felt I needed them I wouldn't worry about a class c during TTC and would immediately discuss with my OB when I got my BFP.

Background: I've had trouble with acne, though it's definitely under control now. Recently I've had cysts show up near my earlobes, and some get infected and look like lumps under the skin. Previous dermatologist took a pretty comprehensive history, drained the cyst and then gave me a shot of cortisone. Bam, cyst is gone in days.

New dermatologist I just saw looked at the cyst, then prescribed an oral antibiotic to take for 3 months, and a topical antibiotic/benzoyl peroxide also to take long-term saying that we are going to treat the acne -and- cyst as a whole. Turns out that these are category C drugs, even though I told him that I'm TTC. He also sent me to the receptionist who told me about the cleanser and mask that they sell.

Bees, what is your experience with Category C drugs? Also, does this doctor seem as suspicious to you as he does to me? My acne really isn't a problem, and I'd really rather not take an oral antibiotic and I hate benzoyl peroxide. I told him so, but he says this is the course of action we are going to take and that it's best.

Any thoughts are welcome! Thanks!
