I am 38, we had our daughter when I was 32. We have tried to get pregnant for the last two years to complete our family. It finally happened, naturally, and baby is due in July!

@nugget16: just focusing on the missed period, have you recently stopped/started breastfeeding, changed your diet, or changed your exercise patterns? i'm sure there are many things i don't know of that could cause a missed period, but i was surprised that i lost my period for 2 or 3 months when i was training for a marathon, and only got it back when i significantly tapered my running. hope the dr. can give you some concrete answers!

While I get that most of the previous commenters are giving positive stories of their own as encouragement, it seems like many (not all) had zero issues with fertility at any point. For someone who’s never had fertility issues to say “that’s not a magic number” and “I had one at 35 and it was fine!”, it doesn’t mean much to someone who HAS had feritlty issues. And it sounds like you did. And, I’m sorry for that! It sucks and I’m SO happy that you were blessed with a healthy baby.
For the record this also isn’t meant as an attack and I’m not upset with any PP. I’m just adding the perspective that saying 35 doesn’t meant anything as a blanket statement isn’t always true

If you already have an underlying issue then yes, 35 can be a factor. BUT it doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

35 actually was a “magic number” for me. I did have to do IVF with my son 4 years ago when I was newly 32 and it worked the first time, also against the odds. I can get pregnant easily but due to a chromosomal issue I had to do IVF with PGD to have a healthy pregnancy.
The 2nd time I was newly 35 and boy was it a different experience. I assumed that since I got pregnant easily before I would get pregnant easily now, and that was not the case. Poor response to meds, set back after setback, all in all it took 3 rounds and almost a year to get pregnant again (and I know I’m STILL one of the lucky ones). Like @JMOM: I was also told that I should just stop and use donor eggs. I also wasn’t ready for that so they changed my protocol a third and final time and that’s what did it. I’m now 36yo and 20 weeks pregnant with my 2nd son.

I hope you know that I’m not saying that 35 can be a factor to discourage, on the contrary - I’m saying that if you go in with reasonable expectations since you already have underlying issues (may take a year or more, may need fertility treatment, etc), you’ll be a lot better off. It CAN happen but for many like us it does take a toll.
So I would talk to your doc and then think about what lengths you are willing to go to to have a 2nd baby. How many months or years are you willing to try (think about the oldest you’d want to be at delivery and how much emotional distress you can take)? What level of treatment are you willing to undergo (simply clomid and TI? IUI? IVF?)? How much are you willing to spend (my current pregnancy cost us about $80k all in, our insurance didn’t cover IVF)?
If you go in with reasonable expectations and set your own limits, I think it’s worth trying. That doesn’t mean that you won’t get pregnant quickly OR that once you hit that limit you’re not allowed to be sad for what didn’t happen. But I think that if you go in knowing FOR YOU what is reasonable you’ll be a lot better off. Good luck and keep us updated.
Your girl is adorable, BTW!

So, my son was born when I was 35 and I was super stressed about TTCing as an older woman. I had no idea what my normal was. The only thing I can really say is that 35 isn't some magic dropping off point, it's likely if you had problems at 35, you had them earlier.

I really liked this article from The Atlantic. It explains how 35 years of age became "that number." Hope it helps.

Thank you all soooo much! Right now I want to figure out why I missed an entire period and if/when it will return! I’ve always been extremely regular (even pp) until this last July. Has anyone experienced this and have any insight? I see Dr. tomorrow. Thanks!!

I spent five years trying to get pregnant with my first child - ultimately my second IVF was successful and I had B at 34. 17 months later I got surprise pregnant (on my 36th birthday!) and had W. 35 isn’t a magic age (although basically every year after 30 I thought “oh God I’m too old I’ll never get pregnant!”) - good luck!

No experience with clomid, but I conceived my 3 kids at 33, month before I turned 35, and the month before I turned 37. I had zero problems getting pregnant. Age doesn't always mean it will be hard.

Many people don't have issues after 35 but I seemed to have trouble getting pregnant with my second when I was 35. I took ubiquinol and I think that was what ultimately helped me succeed. These might be worth a read if you have issues: http://www.paleo-mama.com/improve-egg-quality-supplements/coq10-egg-quality/ AND http://www.paleo-mama.com/which-coq10-is-best-for-fertility-ubiquinol-or-ubiquinone/.

ETA: I was eventually successful. It just took a bit longer to catch a good egg!

Aw, your girl is so sweet! I wouldn't think of 35 as any type of cut off. It's a gradual decline and so many women get pregnant past 35 these days. I got pregnant at 35 with my 2nd and had no issues at all. I am almost 37 and have friends my age who either just had their first or who haven't even had kids yet (but still plan to). Best of luck!

I'm 37 and expecting my first.

I didn't use clomid, but Femara. I have PCOS and it is supposed to work better for women with PCOS.

I've worked with a fertility doctor that was very focused on optimizing my hormone levels. I had low estrogen and progesterone post peak, so I went on HCG shots to help raise them. And I took Femara at the beginning of cycles. I also had "subclinical" hypothyroidism (labs look "normal" - within lab ranges, but the levels weren't optimal).

It took a while to get everything to line up perfectly, but finally, we're more than halfway through pregnancy and everything is looking fine.

I conceived my 1st at 34 (after a miscarriage when I was 32) and my 2nd at 37. We had tried for 7 years before that with several rounds of clomid and 1 1/2 rounds of IVF and the fertility doctor had recommended donor eggs but we decided not to go that route. I don't remember much about the clomid cycles, its probably been 10 years. It was a complete surprise when I got pregnant because the statistics the doctor gave us were very low for a natural pregnancy. Good luck on your journey!!

Good luck! No personal experience but I don't think 35 is the magic age everyone says it is. Yes, fertility declines at that point but it's a gradual decline. If you conceived one baby hopefully you can conceive another

I have a beautiful baby girl who “was never supposed to happen” according to several doctors (including an infertility doctor). I had an amazing pregnancy and delivery of a perfectly healthy baby girl all with no meds or advance treatment.
I will be 36 in February and I want another one so bad!! My rationale is that I had one, so could I possibly have another?? However since July I have had irregular cycles and haven’t had a period since September 7! And I’m not pregnant! I’m seeing my OB on Monday but my last US in September showed everything to be perfectly normal.
My heart longs so much for a little sibling for my daughter. I have always wanted to be a mom and I’m eternally grateful for her but something in my heart says I need one more (sorry to sound selfish).
Anyways, I’d love some feedback on those who conceived later in life AND stories of using Clomid.
Thanks in advance!!
Pic for attention😘
