I would take the time off in March and if my boss needed an explanation I would say that it had to get done before Paris and it was the only time my doctor could do it before then. I personally don't think it is an employers business when you are going to TTC.

Does your boss already know that you are taking off time for Paris? Have you already mentioned TTC plans? Does he know you want LASIK?

Depending on the answers to those questions, I'd say send an email like PP said saying that you need those specific days off for LASIK as well as XX-XX for Paris. TTC plans are none of your boss's business.

I would never tell any employer I was TTC. Regardless of the relationship. That just makes you a very expensive unproductive employee soon (during maternity leave). If there was a situation where someone had to go, as a manager, the person that was TTC would be first on my list.

@TJBee: YIKES! DH really wasn't in all that much pain. They gave him some meds for the pain but he only took them the first two days. You are going to LOVE your new eyes when it is all done!!

@mediagirl: Wow, I hope I heal that fast! My Dr. Only does the procedure on Tuesday, which means I would definitely be out Tuesday-Friday. Then on Monday I would have to go back to get the bandage lenses removed. After that, I can decide whether I feel up to going into work. However, I spend a lot of time at work on the computer, so I'm not sure I'd want to go back to the office for 8+ hours/day. I may try to work from home.
I read one blog where the woman described the recovery pain as "worse than childbirth" so I'm pretty freaked about that as well!

I agree that it's truly none of his business, but if he does ask, why can't you say it's the only time you can get in to do it before your trip in May?

I don't know about you, @tjbee, but when I take vacation time, I don't even ask. As long as you give people advance enough notice (telling them months in advance for March is plenty of time). Just send an e-mail with:

Hello! Just to give you a heads-up, I will be having Lasik surgery performed on March __ and will be out from March __ to March __.

Thanks,

@oliviaoblivia: I have thin corneas, so I have to get a PRK procedure which has a much longer healing time than traditional LASIK.

Thanks you everyone for the advice. The reason I believe my boss will inquire about the timing is because I have a very busy project starting in December which is schedule to run until May, so I believe he will think it would be strange for me to request the time off in March. I don't believe the program will suffer if I take those days off in March because we will be far enough in the planning, but I still think my boss will wonder why I just wouldn't want to wait until the project is finished to have the surgery.
I like the line about it fitting into my Dr.'s schedule. Maybe he'll just take that at face value and not say "he already knows he'll be booked next August?"

I'm not sure if this is at ALL helpful, but here goes.

You may not need a full week off? I had eye cataracts surgery (which is an under the knife/not laser procedure) late last year and early this year. It's a more invasive surgery than Lasik and I was back to work in 2 days. The day of the surgery I was pretty laid up and was out of work. The next day I was physically fine but was told to take it easy. I worked from home. I couldn't lift any heavy objects, work out, or get my eyes wet for a week. But, I take the train to work so driving was not an issue. So, if taking a week off in early March is really bad for your work schedule (and if you can't drive to work or take public transportation) maybe you could just take a few days off post-surgery and then work from home the rest of the week? You might be surprised at your recovery.

I needed to have this surgery before TTC and we waited to TTC until after this surgery.

I agree with Adira. It is none of your bosses damn business why you're taking a week off of work. If you have the time, take the time. Don't worry about what boss is going to think. It's not up to him/her. It's your life and your PTO/vacation time.

My suggestion would be do Lasik now - you may not ever get around to it again till the kids are muuuch older if you wait. One other thing - you're going to start TTC in June, it sounds like. Does your vacation time roll over at the beginning of the year? You want to make sure you have as much as you can when that baby comes. :)

Why would your boss tell you to wait till later in the year? Just tell him that March is the only time that works due tto your doctors schedule. I dont think you need to reveal your TTC plans to your boss

I would ask for the time off in March but I don't think there is any reason you need to tell him why. It's your vacation time and you can use it as you wish. If he pushes just say this is the best schedule for your doctor.

I've heard of people driving themselves home after LASIK. Are you sure you have 7+ days off?
I guess I'd choose #1 but not tell your boss why. If you have vacation or sick time, you should be able to use it without inquiry from your boss. I think giving notice in November for a week off in March is more than adequate.
I wouldn't put off TTC for anything.

I'm not really sure I have advice for you... but to me, it's really none of your bosses' business why you're making the decision to have Lasik in March vs. any other time. That's when you want to do it and he really doesn't need to know the reasons why. I would probably just respond with "It's as good a time as any and I'd rather get it done sooner rather than later!" and hope that's good enough.

Good luck...

I have written this post 4 times and keep deleting it because I don't know how to word it best, but I really need some advice.

I've wanted to get LASIK for years and finally found out I was eligible, but the procedure I require takes 7+ recovery days during which I can't drive or work. I have a very busy work schedule now-May at which time we are going to Paris for my 30th birthday, immediately after which we want to start TTC.
I want to ask my boss if I can take the week off in early March to get the procedure, but when I do, he's going to ask why I don't wait until later in the year. Here's the catch, you can't have LASIK which you're pregnant, and and I can't imagine a time after I have a child that I can be laid up for 7+ days. So my choices are:
1) Ask for the time off in March and tell my boss that I have to do it then because of our TTC timeline (which will cause him minor freak-out)
2) Put off TTC until the fall because I will have to wait a few months after I get home from Paris to take another 7+ days off work for the LASIK and we couldn't TTC until after I've healed.
3) Put off the LASIK until my kids are old enough to fend for themselves - so 20+ years....

Sorry, I know I sound neurotic but there's not really anyone I can talk to about this except for DH and his standard answer is "do whatever you think is best".
