I'm planning on getting my tubes removed eventually but I think I'm going to maybe get a mirena IUD or hormonal implant for the first year or two post-partum to give my body a chance to recover from hopefully an easy vaginal delivery of a reasonably sized baby. (I can dream, right?)

I 100% would have them totally removed because of the decreased risk of ovarian cancer. Especially because ovarian cancer is so silent for so long and it’s usually not caught until quite late, anything that reduced my chances of getting it would be 100% worth it to me.

My mom was born after my grandmother’s tubes were tied (granted, it was done in the ‘30s), so I’d go for removal!

@SweetiePie: were yours removed completely? My doctor explained that in the new process she uses they do remove a portion of the tubes but don't remove them 100%
So confusing all the different approaches to this. Do you get much heavier periods since having your tubes removed?

@Mrsbells: so interesting! I just had my tubes removed in my last cs 3 months ago. I said “tubes tied” when we were planning my CS and my doctor made it sound like removal is now standard. She said something to the effect of “we don’t do that anymore, we remove them”.

@HappyBaker: My sister had her tubes either removed or tied a few months back. Maybe almost a year ago. I’ll find out what she had done exactly and how recovery was. It was standalone surgery 3 years after her last child was born.

@Truth Bombs: :heart:

There are studies coming out right now that indicate that 70% of ovarian cancer may have origins in fallopian tubes (article linked below). The research is still new, but I think if I were considering a tubal ligation I would probably just go ahead and have my tubes removed. Family history, though, would play a large part in my decision.

https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2017/ovarian-cancer-fallopian-tube-origins

and

@Truth Bombs: yes that's what my doctor said that I would need a family history of ovarian cancer or atleast abnormal paps. I think each state and hospital handles it differently?

@Mrsbells: Strange, my friend had an almost opposite situation. She had a C-section at a Catholic hospital where tubal ligations aren't allowed (don't even get me started on that) so her doctor had to completely remove them and code it as preventative against cancer. Two years later her mom got ovarian cancer so it ended up being a blessing in disguise but at the time she had no family history to "justify" the removal.

@HappyBaker: I am heading for a 3rd csection this Fall and plan on having a tubal ligation. I asked my ob if i could have my tubes removed all together instead of just tied. She told me that i need to have a medical reason to have the tubes completely removed.

I just had my 6 week postpartum visit and my OB and I discussed birth control. Since we are done having kids, I want to get my tubes tied. (DH is getting a vasectomy as well -- we want double protection ha). My OB mentioned that now they also offer completely removing the tubes instead of just cauterizing them, because it is thought to dramatically lower your risk of ovarian cancer. The downside is he said the recovery is longer/worse with getting them completely removed.

I had a pretty rough and complication-ridden recovery from my straightforward and easy vaginal delivery this time around, so the idea of going for the more invasive / harder recovery option is not appealing to me at all...but on the other hand I also know a lot of people who have gotten ovarian cancer and if it really could reduce the risk its seems like it would be worth it.

Have you done either as a stand alone surgery (not as part of a c-section)? How was the recovery? Or have you weighed these options and decided yourself?
