At 3 my son had a six month expressive speech delay. His tympanograms were abnormal which may have indicated fluid in his ears. So we did tubes last year. In one year with a lot of speech therapy he is now at age level in speech.

That's definitely common in kids we see at our clinic. Not all of them have had recurrent ear infections; a lot of time it has to do with fluid and an impact on hearing. Totally possible that the fluid could be gone by your next appointment, too. Best of luck!

Dd had fluid in her ears pretty much continuously from Nov-May. We were referred to the ENT, we saw her in April and she wanted to give it another month to see what happened before putting tubes in. Magically, the fluid was gone by the time we went back in May. If she gets another infection she will probably need the tubes since it will be infection #4

Yes - DS1 had tubes twice because of this. His infections would clear but fluid remained. The ENT said basically he is hearing things as if he is underwater or muffled. We tried zyrtec for about a month but it didn't help. The ENT said he had a lot of thick fluid just sitting there.

No regrets with the tubes. Just wish the 1st set hadn't fallen out!

@kml636: @SeptMomma12: @jhd: thanks ladies!! Luckily it doesn't seem to be affecting him right now since he crawls and babbles, but it's good to hear that others got them for this reason and felt good about it! I feel pretty confident we'll be at the ENT in a month.

@SeptMomma12: I never thought about the fact that the fluid would impact crawling and walking but it makes sense with the balance thing. LO did not start crawling until after the tubes were in so maybe that's why!

Our LO had tubes put in at 8.5 months due to chronic fluid. He only had an infection maybe twice (and never accompanied by fever or anything so it was impossible to tell!) but his ears were just not draining properly. The ENT wanted to get the tubes in ASAP so that the fluid wouldn't cause hearing issues & delays in speech.

Yes this was us. I think he had two ear infections at 11 months but chronic fluid that would just not go away. He was starting to show signs the fluid was impacting hearing and balance - wasn't babbling or crawling yet - so we saw an ENT. He took one measurement of the fluid and said tubes were necessary. Said the whole world probably sounded underwater. They were the best thing we could have done for him. Within days he was talking and crawling. Plus he's 2.5 now and we haven't had to worry about ear infections!

I researched this a lot because I resisted getting tubes for my LO (with ear infections) but ultimately I ended up getting them. The fluid is more of an indicator that the Eustachian tube isn't draining and then I think the eardrum doesn't vibrate correctly with all the fluid in there, which would be the hearing loss worry.

It seems a little preemptive, but I know the fluid is what they worry about more than the infections. Also, it can become like a glue from being in there so long. I would just talk to the ENT in four weeks as they are the expert and see what they suggest.

Good luck!

When we were at the hospital for DD's tubes a couple days ago, there was another kid there for that exact reason. His speech was apparently pretty delayed so they needed to get the fluid out so he could hear better. I don't have personal experience with it, since DD got tubes because of repeat infections, but I know there's at least one other kid out there who now has tubes due solely to fluid!

Did anyone have to get tubes for LO because of fluid, but no ear infection?

LO is 11 month, and has had 1 ear infection, but has had fluid present since his 9 month appointment without being infected. Our doctor said if the fluid is still there in 4 weeks we will be referred to ENT about getting tubes because at 3 month mark of fluid it could start causing hearing issues.

Anyone dealt with this? Any chances the fluid is going to magically be gone in the next few weeks? I guess I was kind of surprised since he hasn't had ear infections that we may be on that path.
