I used to work as a speech therapist. I lost count of how many kiddos I saw whose language skills exploded after getting tubes. My little brother had multiple sets of them. My mom said the first time he got them he went from making grunting noises to actual speech sounds in just about 2 weeks

They were life changing. She was 10 months old when she got them and had 10 (!) ear infections before that. I almost say I wish we would have done it sooner, but I am glad we waited because 10 months is still just so little to do anesthesia, I would have been a wreck if she was any younger.

Her ear infections were both frequent and difficult to treat and had them all summer long. Going into cold and flu season we knew we were doomed so pulled the trigger

@LuLu Mom: +1 for totally worth it and I wish we had gotten them sooner! We got them in January when DS was 12 months and have only had one ear infection since that was quickly treated with drops. Before that he had had a constant drug-resistant ear infection since September!

His hearing was definitely being affected by always having fluid in his ears, so his speech really took off once things were cleared out.

Good luck!

@LuLu Mom: we are in the same boat as you- if she gets another bad infection, or two more over the next few months, we will do them. She hasn't had an ear infection since June so we are hopeful that maybe she has outgrown it, but they are awful for her, so I won't hesitate if it's another bad one. We already met with the ENT so all we have to do is schedule the surgery if that's what we decide.

We just got them after months of ear misery. It was so quick and his speech has exploded! I wish we had them done sooner.

Yes, we got them in December when our daughter was 13 months old. She's not had an ear infection since then and her colds aren't nearly as severe either. I was really anxious about the idea of "surgery" but it was so quick and the recovery was immediate for her. And clearly she's doing so much better. I had several threads on the topic if you want to search them.

We are on the verge of tubes, we have been told if this ear infection does not clear up or she gets another one before November we will need tubes. Anyone with experience? Was it well worth it? I feel so bad that my LO keeps getting ear infections, and they always come on so strong! I wish we could get them now honestly so she's not in pain anymore.
