@Mrs. Blue: I think it's normal to have a tiny bit of fear. But if something horrible did happen and you wanted another baby, you could do IVF. You can still have babies with your tubes tied. Getting pregnant naturally is nearly impossible.

ETA: I also think age plays a factor. I was close to 38 when I had my last. If I was younger, I may have thought differently.

@Mrs. Blue: This is the exact reason I'm so not down to do it just yet. I had a friend who was so happy with her two. Her baby was only a couple months and she was considering getting her tubes tied. She went to her doctors and he said she was still so young and should think about it. That same night her baby passed away. I couldn't imagine the pain.

@Mrs. Blue: I had those thoughts too. But for me, when I really thought about it I knew I just couldn't do another pregnancy. I think it's normal to be scared of making that permanent decision.

@Mrs. Blue: there is another bee that had her tubal and still had a baby. She had ivf done I believe. So there are options to have a baby. Or adoption.

I'm planning on a tubal in a week with my next c-section. This is so morbid, but the only part that makes me a tiny bit nervous is thinking what if the worst happened and something happened to our baby...would I want to try again? I know we absolutely don't want more than the number we are going to have (4) and I feel so very, very done that I never balked at all about it until this week. I think it's just pre-baby nerves, so I'm still going forward with it. Did anyone else have any moments of freak out even if you knew you wanted to be done???

@Crisark: I'm curious if that's different from what I had. I think for mine they essentially cut out a section of my tubes and then cauterized them.

ETA: my doctor didn't really discuss options with me. I told her I wanted my tubes tied and she said ok.

I'm telling you just having them removed is so much better. Why tie or clip something that you can take out and having no chance of pregnancy or leaving things in your body unnecessarily?? I'm so happy I removed mine. Heavier periods or not it was the way to go.

@Mae: This is actually what friends who had tubal ligations told me...that periods are far worse than they were before. I had really painful periods prior, and was on hormonal birth control before having kids for over 10 years to help lessen the pain. While we were trying to get pregnant with our second LO, I had miscarriages - they discovered a huge amount of scar tissue in my uterus, removed it, and I got pregnant right away with LO2. All of this to say, my periods after LO2 are FAR less painful now. I'm not sure if they were so painful before that because I had a mild version of endometriosis, but it's so much better now.

I had my tubes tied with my second c-section. I was 10000000% sure I did not want to be pregnant again. And now almost a year later I'm still positive that we're done.

My second c-section did seem like the recovery was a little tougher and my midsection was more tender, and I attribute that to the tubal ligation. But still worth it.

@Mae: my OB agrees with your doc. I was 40 when I had my tubes tied. Between the combo of so many years of birth control and pregnancies and my aging body it all seems worse. But the reality is my periods probably sucked this bad 15+ years ago too. I just really miss a lot of the benefits I had on birth control. But I enjoy not having to remember to take it and the certainty of no more pregnancies.

@Mae: I had used the Mirena twice before and after my last pregnancy before having my tubes removed. I only went that route bc my Mirena caused me more bleeding/spotting days each month that a normal period would have. And it was never consistent. And since we knew we didn't want more kids it made sense to just shut down shop. My periods are now like clock work. And the flow is manageable now but the pms is very intense which I don't believe I ever dealt with before.

@Crisark: Curious... were you on hormonal birth control prior to getting the tubes tied? I just talked to my doc about doing this today and he said that a lot of people say periods are worse/heavier after tubal... but its just that people are either going off hormonal bc, or that they are just getting older or just had a baby or whatever. But I know anecdotal stuff is not always the same as what docs have to say :)

I had my tubes removed. I was also told it lessened my risk for ovarian cancer. The surgery was quick and I had three little incisions and was up and recovering the next day. Only notable thing was my periods were intense for a while. They have slowed some but the pms is still intense. It'll be a year next month. Happy to not have to worry about birth control anymore. Considering my oldest is 14yrs old, we are ready to be done.

@tequiero21: Sort of? I was on hormonal birth control for a long time pre-kids and even in between kids. I get some pretty miserable mood swings/PMS and the birth control helped to level that out for me. Now that I'm not on birth control that's all back. So its more like I've returned to my non medicated self, which I don't really love. But there are certainly advantages to not taking birth control or adding hormones.
