@justjules: My husband and I went to Tulum last year and it was a great trip! We rented a car at the Cancun airport and had no issues driving around at all, and it was really nice to have the freedom to change plans on a whim if needed. And the rental wasn't terribly expensive-$200 for six days. We used America Car Rental, if that helps (get the quote in pesos, it works out cheaper that way).

Beaches were beautiful and really relaxing. We didn't stay on the beach, but used the facilities at a different hotel every day, which you can do with a minimum food and beverage purchase. It was an easy and relaxing trip and would definitely do it again!

@Baby Boy Mom: one of my friends, who always knows what’s happening and “in”, said the same thing. It used to be a lot of “fashion elite” (still not sure what that is hahaha) but now a lot of people know about it so it’s past it’s peak “coolness”

I don’t know Mexico well at all, I just stumbled upon it because of the air bnb, then saw it was close to the beach, and the ruins looks awesome to see in person.

Thanks for the tips! That’s all super helpful info!!

Tulum is one of those places that used to be off the beaten path but has been very touristy for quite some time. The beach is gorgeous. We stayed at a couple places there a few years ago. I agree with pp that public transport is good. The last couple trips, though, we have rented a car at the airport. Gas stations are full service; you tip the workers. We usually go to a grocery store the first day for diapers, beach toys, snacks- basically anything I don’t want to pack. (The people bagging groceries are also working for tips). It’s pretty easy to research on google maps, TripAdvisor etc. Driving directions are better with Waze. And if you have Verizon it’s pretty easy to add Mexico to your plan temporarily so you have phones. Those are the tips I can think of right now. All in all people in Mexico love kids so it’s a good destination imo. Oh, if they touch your kids, it’s to prevent evil eye.

@justjules: I have traveled extensively in the Yucatan peninsula as well as other parts of Mexico. It’s absolutely beautiful and family friendly. Mexican culture overall is very family oriented. There’s a bus service ADO you can take from the Cancun airport or bus terminal to Tulum and from downtown Tulum to your hotel. First class buses in mexico are like airplanes. I usually took the second class or micro buses because they are less expensive. Coco Tulum is a wonderful hotel right on the beach. The beach and ruins are about a 10-15 drive from downtown Tulum (which is still very small and easy to navigate). So if you want to go into downtown you may want to have a car versus the bus. But you will have lots of options for dining at all the hotels on the beach. It’s really beautiful and IMHO better than Cancun. The ruins are amazing. ETA you can also rent bikes! There are bike paths on the main roads along the beach and into tulum downtown

We leave for Cancun on Saturday, and we are sticking to the hotel zone and some safe parts of downtown. DD is 2.5 and DS is 6 months.

Check the State Department website for current travel recommendations. We are choosing to play it safe, but still have fun and enjoy being a tourist!

I've only ever stayed on resort in mexico and that's honestly all I'd consider doing, especially with kids. But that's just me.

Sorry no advice other than one time I went with friends and one couple rented a car at the airport with no issue. I do think they commented it was a little "unusual" and laid back... but the car was fine and as far as I can remember they had no issues.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with traveling to Tulum with kids. DS would be 2.5 and DD would have just turned 1. Looks like we would fly into Cancun and rent a car for an hour drive? We are looking at this cute air Bnb on the outskirts of the town and the reviews say to rent a car to get around since it’s not in the town. Any experience? I’ve never been to Mexico. We travel a lot with the kids in the US since our family is all over the country but this would be our first vacation (not visiting family) with the kids. Any Mexico specific advice?
