Probably around one month on the floor on a blanket. He also hated it and continued hating it (reflux) right up until 4ish months, though he slowly began to tolerate it more. He would go for longer on a soft bed instead of the floor, or propped on a Boppy. She hates it, but now at three months she tolerates it for about 5 minutes. My lactation consultant recommended we did so to build the muscle strength and help us both with nursing. She hated it at first, we'd only do it in very small doses. We never used a special mat or pillow, just a blanket on the floor and a rolled up blanket positioned under his chest. I also wouldn't lay him flat to begin with, I'd prop him up on the Boppy.
