@Ree723: Ellie was a tummy time hater. We (I should say "I") just didn't do it. I would just like to mention, as a huge proponent of babywearing, that wearing your baby helps them to develop the same muscles as well as their proprioceptive sense. There are so many different ways to meet a baby's need for these sorts of stimulation. And thinking back to the not-so-far distant biological past-- (and hearkening to my obsession with those darned cave-people) there is no WAY that it would have been safe to leave a baby laying on its tummy for even an hour a day, let alone three. People had to be mobile to gather food, cook, and engage in other daily life activities (and we're not even talking thousands of years back here in most cases), and there were dangers to babies if they were left at that level. Don't stress too much over it. :) And if you want to up tummy time, by all means, do it.

I *think* this may be the article she referenced. I'll read it a bit later and summarize, but skimming through it, I haven't seen a mention of 3 hours! In fact, in my very brief research, it looks like the AAP doesn't mention/recommend such a length of time either, but I haven't looked enough to be able to say that with certainty. And I know my Peds said three hours a day, because I asked her to repeat it!

Also, the article is controlled, but based on only a 14 kid experimental group, 15 minutes daily time over 3 weeks, and followed for 15 months.

@Espion: Our ped said two hours. Ridiculous. LO had reflux as well so my goal was to wait an hour after he finished nursing... half of the time that ended up being either time to sleep or eat again.

Meh. I'm not a huge fan of tummy time. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to force babies to lay in positions that frustrate/anger them for hours each day. When they are developmentally ready they'll get to their stomachs on their own. I know the concern is that 'back to sleep' means babies will end up with flat heads, but I think constantly putting babies in car seats is likely the bigger culprit, so I try to put DD in the car seat only when necessary (i.e. in the car!) and wear/carry her the rest of the time. I'm sure this opinion won't be popular :)

I would guarantee that 90% of our parents never logged x amount of hours of tummy time for any of us.
I think it's a great idea to encourage these things - use of muscle, problem solving, etc. - but I raise the BS flag on the 3 hours bit. DS haaated tummy time but was early to stand and walk (was walking by 8/9 months) and is a very physical child.

@Espion: It really worked for us. We were struggling with colic and sleep issues. Once we made an hour's worth of tummy time routine, his sleep slowly started to improve. We learned to tire him out during the day which is something that no one told us beforehand. We still had to CIO with him at 6 months, but that was because he was dependent on rocking and nursing.

A nanny friend of mine told me to use tummy time like you would exercise. Use it to not only improve their ability to lift their head and neck, but to get them tired. She told me to do it 4 times a day for 15 minutes each time. The first time I did multiple tummy times during the day, he passed out.

@Ree723: Seriously, right? I don't know how or when we'll put him on his tummy, because he has some serious mechanical reflux. The kid will barf up everything he eats if he's on his belly!
I haven't seen the actual study, yet. Hopefully I can dig it up tomorrow and see how they came to these conclusions. I was floored at the 3 hours too.
