Instead of moving the record player, why not wall mount the TV? Then you can also hide the wires in the wall so they're not visible. I like the idea of having all electronics in one place (we have our DVD player/cable box/record player/surround sound speaker all in a console under our wall mounted TV)

@hellobeeboston: yea I like the idea of moving it to the left of the fireplace! That might work out well. I like the couch placement in that photo though, def opens the room and looks like you have lots more room this layout.

And thanks everyone! It's sorta fun to move everything around and figure this out.

@ShootingStar: thx! We had the couches in the center facing each other on either side of the fireplace which we really liked, but made the room feel smaller.

@hellobeeboston: I LOVE your living room/style!! I personally don't like the tv above the fireplace--I think fireplaces are so pretty and that moving it to the left of the fireplace would work great! You could mount it with a swivel arm if you're worried about getting a good view of it.

DH is anti-tv above the fireplace. We have ours on a console to the right of the fireplace. The console and tv are at an angle so they still face our couch. It works well!

Based on the picture, I'd put the tv in the corner between the door and the window.

I actually really like the layout of your room. Our living room is this giant awkward square, where the tv and the fireplace have to be at opposite ends. So our couch faces away from the fireplace, which I don't love.

If I'm not mistaken, don't they have mounts so that you can angle the tv down a little? That might help with it seeming not too high. We have a living room that is long and narrow as well. Right now it serves as the play room but when the kids get a little older, we'll boot them to the basement and take over the space again. I'm thinking about building some book shelves on either side and then mounting the tv over the fireplace.

@My Only Sunshine: good call! My LO is 2 and will watch a movie now, so I also worry about him craning. But like that it's definitely not in his line of sight.

@looch: totally.

@Zbug: Where did you place it??

So last night I was watching Downton & the special after and felt myself not loving the situation. Like my eyes were straining to look up. Going to give it a few more days. Thought of a new possibility for it that I don't love, but would keep the new layout and put the tv at a better height.

I also don't love how central the tv is now. So I agree with a few of you on that!

Here's a crappy evening photo of the setup:
(Disregard the wires and matchy pillow/rug, that pillow is from another room, ha! Didn't realize I bought the exact same pattern):

@yoursilverlining: Haha, I love that Frozen is on the TV in your picture! A very accurate reflection of most homes with little ones these days :-)

@hellobeeboston: We have the same situation of a really long living room. We put the TV over the fireplace because it's right in the middle of the room and the furniture placement would have been weird anywhere else. It's worked out fine. One bonus of it being up high is our daughter doesn't try to watch it standing six inches away from the screen like she does at our parents' houses where the TVs are lower to the ground.

I am not a fan of the TV on display over the mantle, unless you do some kind of cabinet around it....says the woman with the 60 inch plasma, on full display. But if you need to keep it there for the sake of marital peace, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

We have our 55" TV over the fireplace, and we usually sit 15 feet away from it on our couches, and it's perfect. We love it and will definitely go for the same setup in any future homes. No issue with neck-craning at that distance.

Our homes sound similar. I hated looking up at the tv and didn't really like the look of it either, so it lasted about a day there. I'm not in love with our current TV plscenevt, but we are out of alternatives!

Ours is above the fireplace. It is a little higher than I'd prefer but it doesn't bother me really. We have recliners though, so I think that helps in a weird way. Like @Mae: our cable hook up is there, and the previous owner left a mount, so we never really considered anything else. We never use the fireplace anyway- I'm paranoid about the toddler, even though the glass only gets warm not hot (gas fireplace) and if we hear up the living room too much the bedrooms get too cold.

@Charm54: we decorated in front of the mantle instead of on top, like draped a greenery thing in the front.

@PurplePumps: yeah, at this point it's either block a window or fireplace. We can't figure out another floorplan than the one previous or where we're at now!

@Charm54: looks great - love that fireplace!

@Mae: yeah, that's what I've been thinking - but our fireplace takes up so much space in an awkward room, we've had some art up there for a year, it looked prettier than with the TV as a huge focal point, ugh... I do like the furniture set up.

If there is absolutely no where else to put it, then I'd put it over the fireplace. But I think it's too high above the fireplace and should be placed/mounted at eye level if at all possible.

Ours is. I don't like it because it is high and I have always thought it looked bad. Like fireplaces are so pretty and above them should be something pretty like art. But we put ours there anyways because that is where the cable hookup was when we bought the house and we're too lazy to move it lol.

Ours is right above our fireplace... The entire room is windows so there is no other option. I don't mind it at all - in fact, I love having the fire place going while watching tv. So cozy! The only thing I miss is not being able to decorate the mantle for Christmas !

This is pretty random but curious to hear about others!

We took our tree down today and decided to completely re-arrange our living room. We're in a colonial home, which equals long, narrow living room. There really only two spots to place a TV. One spot - on the wall in the center of the house, or above the fireplace.

The issue with the fireplace is that there is a pretty large mantle around it so it makes the placement of our 48" plasma pretty high. The set up of the furniture is as far away as possible in the room, but it's still up a little higher than we'd like (although you don't need to crane your neck, you're just looking up). We do use the fireplace, but we've been using duraflames lately since they don't give off too much heat and they are easier (lame, i know).

SO! Those with TVs mounted above your fireplace.... yay? nay??

We're going to live with it for a week and see what we think then if we decide to keep it we will mount it and get it on a swivel mount so that it can move around.

OR, anyone else have a colonial/long living room - give me ideas! The other walls are all windows and I don't really want to cover them with the TV.
