I don't turn on the TV news or even NPR in the car with DS1 (3.5) in the car. I would leave on the radio with DS2 (only 12 months), but not if there's yelling or distressed voices (like, if they play a clip). I don't ever have the TV on when DS2 is awake unless DS1 is sick, and then it's Paw Patrol...always and only Paw Patrol...

I don't watch the news myself, really, but if I did I dno't think I'd watch it with the kids around. As it is, I listen to NPR in the car taking them to/from school and I've thought about even that being a bit much. I've switched the station a few times in the past few weeks (Orlando and Dallas coverage, specifically).

I also keep TV on like you mentioned (Today Show etc.). I think I will just use it to guide discussions if I see her watching it in the future.

We haven't had TV for probably close to a decade now. I've been relieved my kids don't see commercials and news stories, stuff I didn't think much of as a kid. But when we're on vacation or at grandparents and there is a TV they usually just get pissed at commercials and my 5 year old def asks about products and news stories now. It's enough that my dad who loves the TV as background noise just leaves it on PBS kids or sports channels. I never asked, he just noticed on his own that she was picking up on probably things that were unnecessary.
I prefer to read the news and just watch short clips occasionally. I used to watch a lot in college and early grad school but after the VTech shootings it just made me want to absolutely vomit the sensationalism and i don't think I ever have willingly turned the TV on a news station ever again.

I have asked my husband to turn the news off the past few weeks because I think kids do pay more attention than we give them credit for.

I don't like the news on around her now (3.5), but never minded when she was younger, and I don't mind around my baby. I would rather talk to her about tragic events in a more appropriate way than it is often done on TV or radio.

We aren't strict with TV around my son. I think nothing of putting the Today show on while he's playing. After watching the news these past few days this thought occurred to me. The news is probably the most inappropriate show that he could see, full of violence and horrible tragedies.

After the Orlando shooting, I asked our nanny if her kids ever asked questions about news stories like that. She said her kids never see the news. My LO never pays attention unless it's a cartoon with a catchy theme song, but today I swear he was watching Rahm Emmanuel speak on the morning news today.

What's your policy on TV news when your child is present? I also listen to NPR in the car, I've done it for many years. That may need to change.
