Check out the TV Smart Shelf - http://flatscreenshelving.com. It works great in this situation. We've got a very mobile 1 year old who likes pressing buttons and exploring. The shelf is way out of reach and so are the components.

@caffeinated: thanks!! lots of great ideas on there. I like the one that took the focus awake from the simple console with symmetrical square frames all along the one wall. Very cool.

@sarac: I think we might get a tilted one, but even so the tv wouldn't be mounted very high - so I don't think it would be an issue for us.

@MrsTiz: I like the buffet... but that isn't in the budget for sure - buffets aren't cheap!!

@mrsmenow: keep the cabinet and just mount the tv slightly above it?

@mrsmenow: true... and my 8 mos old has turned into quite the climber so I definitely want to take every precaution I can. After Mr. Bee's post a few weeks ago, I started reading up on tipping TV related injuries and I am soooo freaked out that I don't let DS within three feet of the TV as it is right now.

@Mrs. Yoyo: good call! and cheap!! that is definitely a viable temporary solution until we either figure out what to do or save money for something else...

I am personally in love with this mantel and would LOVE to do something like this with the TV Above it!!

@Coco Bee: Just another suggestion: If you don't want to mount it, you can get Quake Hold TV straps on Amazon that will attach it to your console. The adhesive is super strong and they work great for us (also in a rental).

@Foodnerd81: We have that exact stand now. Kids will still try to climb on it and touch the TV, but I do think it is a safer set up then just the TV on a stand.

We have something like this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Init%26%23153%3B+-+3-in-1+TV+Stand+for+Flat-Panel+TVs+up+to+50%22/2138607.p?id=1218312456566&skuId=2138607

It's basically a medium low stand, with a panel up the back the the TV mounts to- so it's mounted and less dangerous for a LO to pull over, but we didn't screw anything into our wall. The wires hang down behind the bar/panel thing. We do not have a LO yet so I truly have not tested it for safety, but I wonder if something like that would work? Probably better with doors instead of shelves, since the shelves are all of a sudden looking like steps of a ladder to me!

We are mounting our TVabove our fireplace before this baby comes. We are getting a mount with a tilt so it doesn't hurt your neck so much to watch it.

I would keep the cabinet underneath the tv in your case. Good luck!

In order to wall mount a tv with the bottom being at 5' you need to be approx 12ft away from the the tv for viewing comfort.

@MrsTiz: I think it works okay if your couch is far away enough. If it's too close it's like being in the front row at a movie theatre. :) But I admit, i like the look of fireplace/mantel mounted TVs!

I agree with @sarac; when you have your tv up so high that it's over a mantel it's supposedly pretty bad for your neck. Keeping it eye-level is better. You could keep the unit you have now?

@caffeinated: Ours is above the fireplace and we don't strain to watch it. I think it's because we're almost always laying on the couch or leaned back so it doesn't' matter! :)

I agree, i like the look of TVs mounted above a mantel/fireplace but it is incredibly uncomfortable to view the TV unless you are very far away. I have no idea how people find it comfortable.

Here are some ideas from Pinterest:

Ours is mounted! It's above a fireplace though. We bought this low profile one, but we did drill a hole in the wall for cables:
http://www.target.com/p/sanus-low-profile-wall-mount-for-26-47-tvs-black-san22bb/-/A-12278646#prodSlot=large_1_6

The picture attached is what I would do as far as underneath it, get a buffet type thing for storage and decorating. This link actually shows you how to make it all look wireless like that, so it's worth finding on her site (I don't know how to lol)

I really like the look of the mantel mounted tv, but I never understand how people actually watch tv. Don't their necks permanently hurt? We have ours mounted, but have a very tidy looking pass through for cables, though. I'm in a rental, and I don't expect our landlord to mind.

My sister just has a plastic cover for her cables, I think she may have even painted it to match the wall. It's not perfect, but it really isn't an eyesore.

We will be mounting our tv ASAP for our sons safety and my peace of mind. Here is my issue and I need input: we live in an apartment; so no cutting holes in the walls for cords. I also want it to look nice. This is our current wall and setup but its not safe for babies/kids and I spend half the day trying to keep DS away from the TV area.

What should I do underneath? Keep the black cabinet or something else? Mount a mantel?

I kind of like the look of this but not sure how realistic it is (second picture):

Any input is appreciated!!
