Update: I went to a furniture store yesterday and it turns out what I thought was a thin box spring is actually called a “bunky board” and it doesn’t need to be replaced and basically never wears out. Even if it is 20 years old! And it is better than a piece a plywood because it maintains the warranty for a mattress. So turns out I only need to buy a new mattress which seems easier, and then in 5-10 years when she needs a new one I’ll buy a real boxspring and better mattress and her bed will be normal height. Or for all I know we will want a full size by then anyway. So basically I just need to spend $100 right now which is pretty nice.

We have an IKEA mattress for DS, no box spring as it is not needed for his bed. I’ve taken naps in it and found it comfortable. I’m pretty sure it is the MINNESUND which is the cheapest one.

DS has a twin Tuft & Needle mattress with no boxspring. We just have it on the floor to get him used to it. Eventually we'll get him a bed frame once he stops trying to fall off the bed (he has a noodle under his sheet but it doesn't always work lol).

@MountainBaby: definitely! We have three older twin mattresses that came with our house and all are very thin. So now they make us pay up for a low profile one.

I was thinking more about the bed height problem. I used the same twin bed as a kid that my LO has now. At the time I had both a both spring and mattress and it sat way lower on the bed than the newly purchased box spring and mattress do. I think both items have grown in their "default" thickness over the past 20 years. This probably contributes to all these annoyingly tall beds :)

@MountainBaby: that’s funny that the low one is $10 more. But actually one of those would work well I think, if I got the BJs $90 mattress that gets good reviews.

@Sams Mom: her bed actually has two slots for the reside rails, so we could raise it up later (when we moved in it was on the higher setting with big trundle drawers underneath but was just way too high for a 3 year old. So we can always put it back up down the line. I’m glad I figured out they lowered though because I wanted to get rid of the bed altogether.

@Foodnerd81: The same brand also makes a low profile box spring (interestingly it's more expensive) if you want something in the middle. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-by-Zinus-4-Low-Profile-BiFold-Box-Spring-Multiple-Sizes/53890516

What we decided to do was keep the box spring in the attic (since we already had it) and pull it back out when she's 10 or so, and for now keep it nice and low with just the foundation.

@MountainBaby: funny you say that- I am so annoyed that most of the beds in our house are too tall! We have a nice tempurpedic mattress in our master that I love, but we didn’t get the low profile foundation, but a regular height one, on top of our normal height bed frame, and it’s so high. I needed a stool to get up after giving birth. And we have a hand me down bed for our 5 yo that’s also super high. So I’m very aware of this and will definitely be measuring. The current one is a little low, a very low profile box spring and a thin mattress. Which is nice for a 3 year old but would be pretty low for a 13 year old.

We got a twin box spring, and it was cheap and sturdy and I'd recommend it for it's own merit ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-by-Zinus-Jayanna-7-5-Half-Fold-Box-Spring-Multiple-Sizes/24628979 ). However what I didn't think about was how tall it made the bed. By the time you stack the bed frame, box spring, and mattress it was too tall for my lo to be able to climb independently - which defeats the purpose!

Instead I got this bed foundation. It sits across the three slats of the frame, is sturdy, low profile, and cheap. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072F84TYH

Bottom line, measure before you buy :)

@gotkimchi: did you get the box spring? I thought they were kind of standard or a super cheap add on but I’m seeing more like $100-150 for a basic one.

@macintosh: do you recall which one? I’m skeptical of their cheapest ones, but maybe I shouldn’t be. And foam or spring? Did you get a boxspring?

I did read somewhere that the ikea ones have less chemicals than most because they follow European standards, which sounds nice, right?

So we ended up putting my son in my husband's OLD full-size bed (mid to late 2000s I think), mainly because I didn't want to spend money on one he will outgrow before he moves out.

I have bought 2 mattresses off of Amazon, and my second one has had better reviews from my family than the first. (The first isn't bad, but it's all memory foam, and the new one is a hybrid).

I would replace the mattress for sure and invest in 2 protective covers (so it's never without on laundry day), twin size box springs are easy to come by cheap at a furniture store if you decide it needs replaced too. My mom always kept a fitted sheet on the box spring so it would look nice, even though they were definitely worn.

I'll find the mattress brands and update my post. The first was a Zinus Green Tea 12" memory foam. The second one was an Olee

It happened today- my tiny 3 year old climbed into and out of her crib this afternoon. I don’t think she will again overnight but it’s time to make moves to the big bed.

We already have a twin bed in there that I like, but the mattress and box spring on it could be twenty years old, so I’m going to get her new ones.

Where did you buy your LOs mattress? Did you get a matching boxspring? What type of mattress?

I see BJs has a great deal on a twin for $90, but no box spring. Her bed only has three slats to support it so she definitely needs a foundation of some sort. And while it doesn’t seem like a box spring would wear out that fast this one is 20 years old so I can get a new one! She’s tiny now but I want this to last for ten years or so.
