we went from crib to twin bed, with a rail. wouldn't you know it, she tumbled off the foot of the bed. I put a pillow there the next night, but explained to her that she should stay near her pillow so she doesn't fall off again. i would have liked it if we could fit a full/queen in her room, but there's no way. she's 4 now, and she has a jr loft bed now, so she sleeps on the bottom twin mattress on the floor.

We did crib to twin, but our twin is very low and I didn't use rails.

We did crib to full size too. I don't put it on a frame at first and its on carpet so not a big tumble. We just did this with my 10 month old and she's so much happier with her room now.

we went from a crib to twin mattress on the floor. I wish we would have gotten a bigger bed though!

We went from the crib to a full sized bed. I had planned to convert the crib to a toddler bed, but my son refused to use it, so we had to explore other options. If you have the space, go for a full!

We are doing a twin mattress on the floor. No worry about the height. When he outgrows that we will get him a queen that will be his bed forever. No need to spend money on the inbetween like that :)

ETA we got a really think twin foam mattress from a mattress store for about $50. It worked as a floor bed when he was very young (although that was short lived and we went back to the crib). It is thin, but he weighs so little that it is really comfortable for him (and honestly its comfortable to me too, although i have never slept on it!)

@78h2o: yep and its nice when we have company - I can pull a kid into bed with us and offer up a full size bed for 2 people instead of a twin and a sleeping bag

@Mamaof2: yeah, right after I posted this, I started thinking about maybe a bigger bed than a twin. Glad to know it worked for you.

I moved both of my kids from crib to full size beds - I use pool noodles under the fitted sheet so they don't roll off.

With DS we skipped the box spring for a few months in case he still fell (even with the pool noodle) but with DD we did box spring and mattress right away.

Anyone move their kid from a crib to a twin bed?? Or would it be too high, even with rails? I hate to buy a new bed just for a couple years, if a twin bed could suffice. Technically, I guess I could put a twin mattress directly on the floor, but that wouldn't be very aesthetically pleasing and I probably wouldn't want to do that.
