Update: We had ten people this weekend, and two six-inch cakes. We probably had 3/4 of a cake left over. It was fun to have two cakes, and I'm glad we have started the tradition of singing happy birthday separately to each of my girls.

My MIL sent me a weird non-apology note -- "I'm sorry I stepped on your toes." -- and I'm not sure what to do next. But at least I enjoyed the cakes!

Well the problem is solved! I got into a big fight with my MIL about social distancing this weekend and un-invited her to the party. So now we will have 9-10 people instead of 11-12, and two 6-inch cakes will definitely be plenty.

My twins each get their own small cake and I pick the flavor but they pick how it's decorated (or when younger I decorated to be like a favorite thing at the time). 6 inch cakes should be plenty.

@ElbieKay: No, no, I totally get wanting to give each child their own choice and not force identical-ness on them! And I mean, if you get to choose for them at this age and want to choose two things you like, go for it!! Agree with the others saying desserts can be frozen/sent home with guests who are close enough to you to feel comfortable taking some with them.

And no, your hubby doesn't get to choose sorbet as the birthday treat for one of your twins! :silly:

But in all honesty....@wrkbrk: said what everyone knows the real solution is....over-buy and eat cake for a week!!! :):):)

@wrkbrk: it is pretty annoying to live with someone who says, in earnest, “I just don’t really like chocolate that much.” 🤯

However he is right that we have limited freezer space!

@PinkElephant: hmmm the point about identical cakes is a fair one. They are identical twins and I try to make a point of not dressing them identically, etc. And I love the idea of different cake flavors. But maybe I should consider this. Thanks!

@wrkbrk: hahaha my husband would kill me! We are low on freezer space, and he doesn’t really like sweets. He is a total buzzkill about having too much dessert. I tried telling him when we were dating that the entire point of going on a date is to share dessert, and he would always order sorbet. Maybe I should have just moved on... 🤣

@ElbieKay: This is an easy one. Over-buy and have leftover cake! You solve the issue of everyone wanting a second piece and ... leftover cake 😂😍

Two thoughts (besides the cupcakes)....

(1) If the cakes are the same flavor, would people really want to sample both? I would think at just turning two, your kiddos probably aren’t making flavor requests - I can see how having the same flavor might become problematic in a year or two when they each have favorites.

(2) my eight year old and I share a birthday; we often request different desserts (cookie cake, a fruit pie/crisp, even doughnuts or breakfast pastries). This year I had a no-bake butterfinger pie and my daughter had a traditional layer cake. We didn’t have a party, but we just cut tiny slices to sample both.

When I’m at a wedding/formal event, DH and I just trade bites of desserts/meals, so I wouldn’t worry too much about people taking double the dessert.

Another vote for considering cupcakes! Little kids tend to spray a lot of spit when they blow out candles, so I always think cupcakes are easier. Also means each girl can just have her own!

But if you stick with cakes I would do two of the smaller ones. Not everyone will want to try both and if they do, they can have small pieces.

Get two six inch cakes and cut the slices thin. Presumably if people want to taste both most of them are going to want a half slice of each and not two full slices.

We always celebrate my girls’ birthdays together with family, and usually have about 15 people there. Last year I decorated two (single layer) 6” cakes, and then I made a dozen cupcakes. We had a ton leftover. If you do double layer cakes, I think 6” will be more than enough, but if you’re worried, you can always make the 8” ones and send extra home with people.

My twins are turning two in a few weeks.

I want to get two birthday cakes because I have read a lot of complaints from adult twins about having to share their birthday cake!

We are hosting an outdoor bbq with extended family, total of 11-12 people, including the five members of our nuclear family and my parents who are part of our quarantine bubble.

One 6-inch cake serves 6-8 people. One 8-inch cake serves 10-12 people.

I cannot get out of the loop in my head of "what if everyone want to taste both cakes?"

But I do not want a full cake's worth of leftover cake! (Or do I... hmmm....!)

Would you get two 6-inch cakes or two 8-inch cakes?
