@Oceanis723: Thanks for sharing! Right now my twins go down at different times - one is so much easier to put down than the other and she's sleepier earlier than her brother. It takes a long time to put him down and we haven't let him cry much at all because we don't want him to wake her! If/When time comes to sleep train (although I hope they will "naturally" sleep well and through the night without my intervention ;) ), I think we'll have to bite the bullet regarding the fear of one waking the other and just deal with it as reality!

Hope that potty training is going smoothly!

Sorry it took me so long life has been a bit hectic. So I started sleep training at 6 months. I was around the time I switched them to their own cribs as well. I would tandem nurse them and they would fall asleep. We would carry them to bed and they would wake up but be sleepy. We would put them down and go in every ten minutes to calm them down. The first couple of nights it took about an hour. I think it's worse with twins because they would work each other up.
After about a week they would cry for a couple of minutes but then fall asleep. I nursed them for a year so until a year I didn't deny them feedings during the night. I was always so concerned with whether or not they were getting enough. During the night I did two things depending on how tired I was. If I was awake enough I would take both out to the couch and tandem nurse. I would take my cell phone and call my husband to come help me get them back to bed. If I was exhausted I would just come back to bed with the one that woke up and fall asleep. When the next one woke up I would put the first back in his crib. At a year we switched to milk and I stopped night time feedings. They pretty much slept through the night at that point so it wasn't too hard.
Everything went well for a few months until they learned how to get out of their cribs at 1 year 4 months. Then we had a whole new battle.

@sandsandmore: I read the story of your boys on your blog. I'm so sorry for your loss... Of course you're a twin mama!

@Oceanis723: Thank you for what you've shared! When you have time, I'd love to hear about how you sleep trained your twins and how it all went. Thankfully for the most part they are kind of on similar schedules at night.. easiest when one naturally wakes up after the other is fed. I couldn't successfully nurse them at the breast so I pump and supplement formula so we bottle feed. When they don't wake up simultaneously in the wee mornings, I try to take one shift so my husband has a block of sleep and then I can have a block of sleep for the later shift. If only we could control this! ;) I've tried putting them on the same schedule during the day with feedings and sleeping but it fails when I force it so I let them be at their own rhythms and am just grateful when they are more in sync than not.

Thanks especially for the iPod/shower tip. I haven't been alone with the twins for more than 30 minutes at a time - I'm terrified to at this point because I think I'd run and hide under the covers if they were to cry at the same time.. or I'd just cry too - which I have done many times before also!

SANDSANDMORE I am sorry for you loss. No need to explain, you will always be a mom of twins. I'm not sure how long ago you had your angel baby and my intent is not to upset you. But my friends Mom is a board member of an amazing group called twinless twins. It is a national group. If you ever want an introduction I would be happy to introduce you.

@junebuglim Its so hard to give advice when my main goal for the first several months was survival. I felt like my head was barely above water. There are a few things that I did that really helped me survived.

I tandem nursed them with a nursing pillow and sleep training be damned if they fell asleep on the pillow during the day I just sat there and let them sleep. This did mean that I spent the better part of 4 months sitting on my couch with a giant blue pillow around my waist and babies hooked to my chest. I did not bother with sleep training until 6-8 months. (survival)

Please know that twin infants are hard!!!! I kept that in mind as they reached new milestones. As they got a little bigger and more stable I was able to more with them and it gets easier. I kept reminding myself that. Each month it would get easier.

once they were big enough and able to nurse well I did it laying down in bed. I know everyone says to feed them on a schedule and during the day I did that, but at night when they were still waking every couple of hours I would nurse whoever woke up in bed and I would fall back asleep while they ate, then when baby number two would wake up I would put baby number one back in their crib and switched sides. It was the only way that I could get any sort of sleep. It is sort of like co sleeping but neither of them became dependent on it since they never stayed in bed that long.

If people offer help, take it and don't be ashamed to ask when you need a break. There were so many time when I sat there crying because I did not know how to make them stop crying. Colic will do that. When you need a break take it. One time when my husband went back to work the twins had been crying for several hours and my oldest son was refusing to nap. I just couldn't handle the screaming anymore so I put each of them into their cribs where I knew they would be safe and I took my Ipod into my room and listened to one song. By the end of the song I was more relaxed and I went in and got each of my babies and went on with my day. Or when my husband would come back from work I would always go take a shower (still do) 20 minutes where can't hear them fussing. Its amazing what a nice hot shower can do for your mental state.

Hopefully that helps a bit I will try to think of some more. I had a twin playdate with four other twin mamas I know today and I am a bit brain dead.

@Shimmer: I was in the same situation as you. We found out at 8.5 weeks and were joking about it in the waiting room before the scan because twins run in my family. The tech didn't tell me and had my husband share the news- I didn't believe him at first. They're our first children too.

@oceanis723: Thank you for sharing your stories about your children on the blog... you are an amazing mama! I feel like I'm barely holding up!! Still extremely sleep deprived. The babies came at 35 weeks so the first few weeks were so focused on survival.. feeding and having them gain weight. They have thankfully been happily chubbying up and their smiles and coos make the frustrations melt away. but sleep oh dear sleep.. how i miss thee! ANY thoughts or wisdom you have to share on caring and nurturing more than one infant at one time would be greatly appreciated!
