@Trailmix: I think I'm in the minority, but we fed and slept on demand until 10 months when we night weaned and sleep trained. My kids just never responded well to a hard and fast schedule, and have very different eating and sleeping temperaments. DD sleeps more and DS eats more often, and even now they have a bottle every 2.5 hours during the day. We tried syncing them overnight for awhile, but I was paranoid about interrupting potential natural elongation of sleep stretches as they got older, so we just kind of slogged through all the wakeups.

We do have a loose schedule for our days now that they are squarely on 2 naps. Awake for threeish hours between sleeps, and milk at wakeup and half hour before sleep. I never woke them up from naps until recently, but occasionally I will now wake DD if she's taking a monster nap that would get them more than an hour out of sync.

@Trailmix: Congratulations!! To answer your questions ...

Mine are on a flexible routine/schedule. When they were newborn, we fed them every 2.5-3 hours. It does feel like that's all you do in the beginning, but it gets easier, I promise! They're still on a 3-3.5 hour feeding schedule now at almost 6 months old.

I do not believe that the "never wake a sleeping baby" rule applies to twins. We follow the "one up, both up" rule. :) That being said, it also depends on how they have napped that day or slept that night. I was also fortunate that mine stayed pretty synced up and would nap for generally the same lengths of time. At night, whenever the first one woke up to eat, we would wake the other one to feed them both at the same time.

I asked this same question early on to my pediatrician and she said we should stick to the 3 hour feeding schedule, which we still do during the day. They started STTN in 12 hour stretches at 3.5 months. Plus, as they get older, they'll become more efficient at nursing and feeding, so it won't always take as long for feedings. Early on, we had to wake them for their feedings to make sure that they ate enough during the day.

I would say follow your instincts on what you think works best for your twins. If it doesn't work out well, tomorrow is always a new day!

Hi twin moms!
I am now joining you guys on the other side since I had my babies on June 1.
I have a question about scheduling- did you put yours on a schedule?
Everything I've read online says to do a 3-hour feeding schedule but by the time I change them, feed them, burp them, awaken them to get back to nursing, etc, it feels like there's hardly any time before it's time to eat again!
Also, there's the whole 'never wake a sleeping baby' thing, which we've been doing.
They just started sleeping in 3.5-4 hour stretches at night, so I'm wondering if I could push the feedings to every 4 hours during the day (unless they're hungry, obviously).
I feed them both at the same time, so was thinking about just letting them sleep until at least one wakes up, then waking up the other to keep them in sync.
I'm just worried if I mess with what we've been doing, I'll pay for it tonight.
What do you guys think? Let the babies sleep until they wake themselves up or wake them every three hours, if needed?
Thanks!!

@WALLAROO: I hope your week improved!

Yesterday was not a great nap day, which in turn led to a long evening. I had gotten one twin down in the crib and was rocking the other one since he woke up after just a little bit in the crib. Just as he was starting to fall back asleep, my dog goes rampaging through the house because DH had pulled in the driveway (but for some reason he thought it was a stranger) and wakes up both twins. Arggghh! The only plus side was now DH was home to help deal with two cranky babies. :)

I'm headed back to work next Thursday. Cues the tears. Monday we'll be spending a few hours at the daycare together and Tuesday and Wednesday will be half days for them while I get some dentist appointments done. I'm hoping this way the transition will be a bit easier ... any other twin moms deal with going back to work?

@filly: Welcome! We also follow the 90 minute sleep program, although they're still not quite to the 90 minute awake time frame just yet.

Hi Everyone!

My g/g twins will be 5 months on April 7th.

After 2 weeks on home bed rest and 23 days on hospital bed rest I delivered vaginally at 35 weeks. Twin A came home straight away while Twin B was on the extended stay plan and joined us 17 days later. They are exclusively breastfed and Twin A sleeps through the night [8:30/9pm - 8/8:30am] while Twin B wakes between 3/3:30 eats then goes back down until about 7:30/8am.

I started them on the 90 minutes up 90 minutes down and at the moment they each have 3-4 naps a day. One of the naps is about 2.5-3 hours while the others are about 1-1.5 hours.

And thats where we're at :)

@WALLAROO: Aww, I hope your day improved!

FWIW, our LO's are going through their 4 month sleep regression. After going through nap training HELL three weeks ago, I gave in today and let them sleep on me/in their swing for their morning nap. It probably wasn't the greatest, but they slept for 2 hours straight, and I got a nap! On days like today, I say anything goes! :=)

I'm having one of those days where I feel like I am nursing every hour. The babies are not napping well today. It is 10:33am here and they have nursed 3 times each since getting up at 7:30 and napped maybe 30 min in their swing. They also want to be held after nursing and don't want to be put down. We haven't had a day like this in awhile. *sigh* hope the afternoon gets better and I get some longer naps.

How are the rest of you mamas doing?

@junebuglim: Haha, when I went to the hospital at 37 weeks for what turned out to be true labor, I didn't take my packed hospital bag because I was SO sure it was going to be a false alarm and we'd be back home in a few hours. Welp, that was not the case! Not only did we not have our bag, my cell phone was almost dead and no charger! Haha ... best laid plans ...

I also had BH contractions like crazy from 30 weeks on, often more than 6 per hour. After one trip to triage for them, I just learned to live with them daily. I guess that's why I didn't think my labor was real, I just assumed they were BH since they would get borderline painful at times.

@Mrs. Lovebug: Welcome! Support is a must with twins! Kudos to you on EBFing your twins! I had supply issues early on with my boys and we had to supplement with formula after each feeding session. Through those struggles, I moved to exclusive pumping and giving one bottle of formula each day. Not sure what changed, but something clicked and for the past four weeks or so, they are now exclusively on breast milk and I'm even pumping enough to freeze extra every few days. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my supply will keep up once I'm back at work in a few weeks.

Hi all! Happy to see so many MOMs here. I have 10 month old b/g twins, and I delivered them vaginally at 37 weeks. I was terrified of having a C-section, and at 23 weeks, I ended up switching from my OB to a perinatologist that was recommended to me by 3 of my colleagues who delivered twins with him. He had tons of experience delivering twins and higher order multiples, and at our first appointment, he actually said, "I don't see any reason why you'd need a section-" at that point Baby A was head down, but B was breech, and he would perform a breech extraction, if needed. Luckily, Baby A (ds) stayed head down, and B (dd) flipped to head down right before we went into the OR to deliver! We were blessed to have no time in the NICU, and other than being completely uncomfortable, huge, and bloated, I had a good pregnancy. My Dr. put me on leave from work at 26 weeks because I was fatigued, but no bed rest was ordered; however, I decided to take it super easy and I rested most of the day anyhow--I wanted to keep those babies in for as long as possible!

I EBF'd them, which was super challenging at first because it took forever for them to latch, but I was determined to make it work; I finally mastered tandem feeding, and I still bf them in addition to solids 2-3 x/ day. I used the Boppy at first, then switched to the My Brest Friend for twins when they got older and needed more room.

They still wake up at night--ds will wake 1-2/night, while I stopped counting dd's count--we do partial co-sleeping with her: I sleep with her until ds wakes up, then my husband puts her in her crib in our room, while I nurse ds in the guest bedroom. When dd wakes up, my husband goes to the guest bedroom, gets sleeping ds, and puts him in his crib in the nursery while i go back to dd and nurse her in my bed...she wakes every 1.5-2 hrs, while ds will go 5-7 hrs. Yes,it is crazy, but this is the way that everyone can get the most sleep; we are really trying to avoid CIO--I know plenty of parents have success with it, but it is just not something that we're comfortable with right now. They take 2-3 naps that average 45 min-1.5 hours.

Wow! My hat is off to you who cloth diaper! Good for you! We had every intention of cloth diapering, and even bought inserts and covers; when the babies came, we were so overwhelmed that the cloth diapering was the last thing on our minds!

@Trailmix--congrats to you during this exciting time! It is a roller coaster of emotions, but think positively and take care of yourself. Rest, eat well, and drink your water! Its true that you tend to hear more negative birth stories with twins, but as seen by the replies, NICU time is not a given. With respect to registry items, I echo what Mrs. Train wrote about places to put the babies--bouncers, swing; our LO's loved their rock n play rockers and slept really well there too!

@Sunshineandsushi--thanks for starting this post! It's good to have support and validation!

@Trailmix: the anxiety for ptl when pregnant with twins is so normal and completely unavoidable I think! I refused to pack my bag because I was superstitious about them coming early early - build it and they will come mentality a la field of dreams. I also didn't by premie clothes for the same reason. My kiddos came at 35 weeks unexpectedly because my water broke! I was showing no signs otherwise. My ob was out of town that week and the on call dr felt most comfy/confident delivering twins by c-section so we did. My recovery was very smooth and the twins did not have to go to the NICU. They did stay in the nursery though because they were struggling with temp control. They were 4 lbs 13 oz and 5 lbs 2 oz.

Like @twoofeverything I also went to l&d before my actual delivery. I had Braxton hicks contractions every day from early 2nd tri and had to go twice to be monitored because I was hitting 6 an hour. Every thing was fine and one advantage was that we got to know our way around l&d in prep for actual delivery.

As for registry, my babies shared a bassinet (with wheels) for a few weeks which made it easy to take them from room to room and then made great use of the rock n play and swing.

@Trailmix: It felt like the start of period cramps. It wasn't anything bad, really...it was similar to those first twinges you get a day or so before your period starts. I combined those twinges with the fact that I *knew* I had overdone it that day (hanging curtains, long walk, lunch out with DH, and a baby shower), and I just had a feeling something was up.
I ended up going to L&D three or four times between 28-36 weeks. They usually gave me a shot of terbutaline, and then I went on nefedepine every six hours. This probably isn't what you want to hear, but I did end up getting admitted when I was 32 weeks...I was on hospital bed rest for 4 days while they put me on a magnesium drip to slow the contractions. After that, I was on pretty strict bed rest for the following month at home, (although I did break the rules BIG TIME by cooking Thanksgiving dinner at 35 weeks...don't do that).
Once I got to L&D, they hooked me up to the monitor so I could see each contraction as it happened and match it to the symptoms. From then on, I knew immediately when I needed to go get checked out!
You'll also start getting NSTs at about 32 weeks -- for me, they were scheduled twice a week, so that always put my mind at ease that everything was okay.

Originally I liked the fuzzybunz better since I could adjust the elastic to fit my small guys better, but now that they're bigger I prefer the bumgenious.

@sunshineandsushi: Woohoo! I was curious if any other twin mamas cloth diapered. Our stash is Flips for daytime and BG 4.0s at night....now with hemp inserts. I think we have 24 flip inserts and 8 covers, and 11 BGs right now. It even worked out great for a weekend traveling, but we'd need some more if we want to stay in cloth more than 48 hours without laundry. I usually do laundry every day at home, just because I want to, and it's less to buy for now.

FWIW, Our cloth diaper store said a stash and a half are usually what they recommend for twins (so 36ish) rather than a full double stash, if you want to wash every other day.

@Trailmix: Try not to worry too much! I had identical twin boys and was induced at 38 weeks. They weighed 6 lbs 8 oz and 7 lbs 1 oz. We did have a bit of a scare at birth, but I blame that on the doctor having no clue what she was doing. They did not spend any time in the NICU. Good Lucks with the remainder of your pregnancy!

@Trailmix: I carried my boys to 37 weeks. I had a c section because they shared a placenta so I didn't even try to induce. I did have preeclampsia so they took me in a few days early from my scheduled day. My twins were 6 lbs 8 oz and 5 lbs 12oz. They were never in the NICU.

As for registries I think things that give you a place to put the babies are good. Like swings or bouncy chairs. We also had bumbos and excersaucers for when the were a bit older. I did have a nursing pillow that went around my back and hooked so it always stayed in place. The boppy pillow never worked for me.

@Trailmix: I had Playtex Nurser Drop-Ins bottles to start. They worked well in the beginning and didn't cause any nipple confusion with my boys, as we had to supplement with formula at the beginning. I've since moved to exclusive pumping for a variety of reasons. Now we use Dr. Brown's bottles. I definitely recommend trying out a few before committing, and make sure you try them for several days to see if they work well.

We bought 24 cloth diapers while I was still pregnant to try them out before committing to buying the full 48 we estimate we need. 24 last us about a day and a half with two. We've been using them for about a month so far and both DH and I really like them! I really haven't found them to be difficult to use or clean so far. We got the bumgenius AIO Freetime diapers, so there's no stuffing or anything like that. We're just waiting for them to go on sale again before buying the rest.

@Twoofeverything How did you recognize symptoms of PTL? That is one of my biggest concerns, that I won't recognize it. As a result, I think that every gas pain or baby bulge is a contraction. I actually have yet to make it between my regular 2-week appointments without an unscheduled sonogram or trip to L and D to get checked out. It's a little insane (I'm a chronic worrier and pregnancy hormones are not helping my anxiety.) I will be thrilled if I make it to 36 weeks and it's great to hear another story where no NICU time was needed!

@Sunshineandsushi Thanks for responding, I do love to hear positive twin stories where no NICU time was needed. Also, appreciate the registry suggestions, I have the A+A blankets and the Nosefrida on there already, so that makes me feel good (like I maybe sort of am doing something right, ha). I appreciate the advice about getting everything together, unfortunately my shower isn't until I'm at 30 weeks (was too superstitious to have it earlier) and we're moving 2 weeks before that, so probably things won't be all together but it will just have to be ok anyways.

@Merryc Also love to hear your positive story, especially the vaginal birth!! I would LOVE to have that experience, right now both are breech so we'll see what happens. As for being at risk for pre-term labor, no GD (just passed that test yesterday, yay!) and BP is still relatively low, although having a good amount of swelling in fingers and feet. The only real risk factor is that we started out with triplets, so the fact that we are now at twins does put me at a slightly higher risk for pre-term labor. Mostly, I'm just hyper-crazy and paranoid and a chronic worrier. Fingers crossed I get to at least 37 weeks! Also, thank you for the gear suggestions, we'll definitely be getting some sort of bouncer, good idea to get two different types! And we'll also be getting bottles for sure as I'm just assuming we'll have to supplement. I'd love to do cloth diapers but don't think we'll be starting out with them, so also great to hear a story about someone switching after a few months!

@Littlehunny I have always had in my head that anything past 32 weeks was alright, so it was good to read your story and be reassured that even if they do come fairly early, they will be alright. Thanks for the gear recs too!

@Trailmix: And the movement used to totally freak me out, too. As long as you're feeling something, they're alive ;-) We would go through phases of 1-2 weeks where the movement would die off, then they would get really active again. I think it just means they're working hard at growing!

@Trailmix: So excited for you!!!
As long as you are taking it easy/staying off your feet/paying close attention, you will be fine. Head to L&D if you ever get really worried...they have good monitors and good drugs that will keep you pregnant if you do go into pre-term labor!
My guys were born at 36 weeks on the dot5.5lbs and 5.10lbs...no NICU time. I did go into PTL at 28 weeks, but we were able to hold it off with meds and bed rest. They actually would have probably gone to 38 weeks, but my thyroid went wacko, (I had problems pre-pregnancy), so we had to deliver a bit early.
Hang in there, mama!

@Trailmix: my boys were born at 33 weeks 4 days by c section because I had pre e/HELLP. Ethan was 4.8 lbs and Liam was 4.1 lbs. Ethan was in the nicu for 4 weeks and Liam was there for 3. For the most part they were healthy & just needed some extra time to grow in the nicu & learn how to eat.
So far they love their swing & vibrating chair.

@sunshineandsushi: I don't think I would be able to function at work at this point with the boys getting up a few times at night plus liam doesn't like to go to bed until 11 pm. 14 weeks is definitely not enough time off!

@Trailmix: Hi! I feel you, at the end of the 2nd tri was when my worry about preterm birth really kicked into high gear. Do you have any risk factors, aside from the twins themselves? I never developed any high BP or GD. We made it to 39w2d and was induced because my fluid levels were getting low-ish, and my baby B's placenta was starting to calcify. Basically twins hit postmaturity (the equivalent of 42 weeks) around 39 weeks, so it was safer to get them out than keep them in. My induction was really smooth (I was 2cm and 85%eff on induction day), less than 12 hours, and I had a vaginal delivery. Kids were 6-12 and 5-4.

For registry stuff? I planned to tandem BF, and it just plain didn't work for us. So a single BF pillow was more helpful. We had 2 bouncers, one of which could be used as a swing too. The bouncers were different styles, one was the snugabunny and one was a more narrow one with heavy vibration. That turned out to be awesome, since the kids liked different things. Double snapngo stroller was essential for the first 6 months, got a double bob and a combi twin after that. And not really a registry thing, but a minivan has been so wonderful for us :) And others may disagree, but I'd have a stash of bottles on hand, and maybe some formula. Most multiples mamas have to supplement at least a bit at first while their supply is building capacity for 2 babies. We used disposable diapers for the first 7 months and recently switched to cloth - not for everyone, but you're doing so much laundry anyway, it really doesn't make a dent, and disposables for twins add up FAST - we were spending $3-5/day. Nosefrida - get it ahead of time because you can only find it online and when babies are sick you want it right away :)

@Trailmix: Congrats on your twins! I totally understand your concerns about pre-term labor and all the concerns that come with a twin pregnancy.

My boys were born at exactly 37 weeks after my labor started (which I didn't know was labor, thought it was more BH contractions!) via c/s. Baby B never flipped to head down, so c/s was the safest choice recommended by my doctors, which I was fine with. They were 6 lbs, 9 oz and 7 lbs, 1 oz when they were born. Now, at 10 weeks, they're at and over 12 lbs! No NICU time was needed, which was another huge fear of mine. My recovery from the c/s was super easy and I'm really happy about how everything went.

I'd say definitely get as much finished and squared away for your registry, shower, nursery, etc. as soon as possible. My goal was to have everything done by 30 weeks and I'm so glad I did. By then, I was so big and uncomfortable, it was really difficult for me to get out to run errands or even stand for long periods of time.

My fave baby items so far are the Aden + Anais swaddle blankets, the Nose Frida, two Boppys, Ergo carriers. We have two swings and bouncers, but so far, my boys aren't in love with them and we don't use them daily, or even weekly.

@littlehunny: So jealous of your mat leave! I go back on April 11, after about 14 weeks off. Already dreading it. :(

We kept the boys home for the first six weeks until they got their first round of shots. Now, I've gone practically everywhere with them! Target, the mall, Ikea, restaurants ... you name it! I think I'm just lucky right now that they konk out as soon as they're in their car seats, which makes trips out pretty easy so far.

@MerryC: Pretty sure that we're two and through. :) Our original paln was to have two kids, we just happened to get it done in one shot! Plus, I'm super paranoid that if we tried for another, we'd end up with twins again!

Hi everyone-
I am 25 weeks with b/g twins. I think now that Mrs Blue delivered hers, I'm the only one left whose twins are still in utero. I'm still struggling with a lot of anxiety about pre-term labor and just worrying about their general well-being (like right now, it's been a 12-hour stretch with very little movement and it's freaking me out) so I'd love to hear about how far along you all were when your babies were born and stuff.
Also, registry suggestions, that stuff is confusing!

@sunshineandsushi: hi! there are so many twin boys on HB! i have 10mo g/g twins and i work outside the home.
@wallaroo: my girls were exclusively FF since they were 4 months old. i can't wait to ditch all the bottles after we transition to cow's milk next month!!!
@twoofeverything: my girls finally got on a synchronized nap and bedtime schedule at around 8 months, but they've slept through the night (10-11 hours of uninterrupted sleep) since they were 5 mo. with the time change, they now get up a little before 7am, take two naps at 9:30a and 1:30p and go to bed close to 8pm.
@mrs.blue: congratulations!
@junebuglim: i'm with you - i couldn't handle being alone with the twins when they were little! it's STILL hard for me and they're almost 1!
@merryc @tequiero21: i had help too but i'm not sure if i want to do a FET in the future. DH wants one more, but i'm def not ready.

I also have 11-month bg twins! One year at the end of the month - oh how time flies! @junebuglim and I have twins born on the same day! I so wish she were in jersey! Lol.

My kids still wake up a few times a night but only feed once, sometimes twice. I still haven't fully sleep trained them. According to the bees blog, I have missed the good times to train. And I wanted to wait until they turned one to wean them from bm and night feedings. I will really buckle down on sleep training in a few weeks. gotta start reading up! They are better nappers now. They are on solids 3x a day, bf between solids and a bottle at night. Used to give pumped milk and formula.... But lately, I've quit pumping! So, just some formula and bf (for a few days they were not taking formula, but I think they are taking it again)...

We did have "help" having twins w treatments. We will not go that route again and I am sad that we told them to discard all our frozen. But we are officially ntnp. Would love one more, but we are happy with our two if that's all we get to have!

My b/g twins are 7.5 months (how did that happen?!?). Thankfully they were born full term and avoided the NICU. I stay home with them, and will probably until they are school age.

They have definitely gotten easier as they get older, and we are really feeling like a quasi-rested, happy family lately. We took our first family mini-break to the beach last month and plan on taking the kids camping a lot this summer.

Sleep? My kids still eat overnight. DD wakes once or twice, but gives us a big long stretch (7-9 hours). DS wakes usually three or four times, anywhere from 2-4 hours apart. He slept 7 hours once in his life, and we had a party, lol. Usually about 12 hours from bedtime to morning wakeup.

Naps? We did the 90 min sleep thing for many months, and they've never really been super coordinated. Lately they've consolidated naps and are down to 3 slightly longer naps, about 3-4 hours total, and are a little more coordinated most days.

What is everyone thinking about family planning? Are you done after your twins or do you want more?

We are content with our two, and fit well in our current house. We would be happy if we had a surprise baby, but wouldn't plan it (or pay for it!).
