@jedeve: we have a monitor and she calls out. She STTN so it rarely ever happens. We've told her that she isn't allowed to leave her room at night and must call out for us. My mom was sooooo worried over this. She told me that we had to sell the house and move when I told her our room set up. Lol! Tell your parents that it will be ok!

@Andrea: what do you do if they need you in the middle of the night? Do they just come upstairs or do you have a monitor?

Our parents seem to think this is a huge problem.

Sure, our 3 year old sleeps on a different floor with no issues. We have two up three down. The baby's room is upstairs. When she is older, we'll have both kids downstairs and rejoice in all of our private space upstairs! :-)

Nope, not at all! My parents house is like this. 2 main bedrooms upstairs, and then 2 bedrooms on the main level. My parents have the master bedroom upstairs, and my sister has the other. My brother has the bedroom on the main level, and right now the spare bedroom is a computer room.

Perfect set up I think!

We are considering buying a house with two bedrooms on the main level and two in the nicely finished basement. We have one kid now, might have another in a few years. We don't plan own living in this house forever, but don't want to grow out of it too quickly.

Would this be a deal breaker for you? Would you put a three year old on a separate floor from you?
